Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides

At the D23 Disney Fan Expo, Walt Disney Studios unveiled the logo/title for the fourth film in the Pirates of the Caribbean series: Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. No plot details have been revealed. What might “On Stranger Tides” mean?

Johnny Depp, who was on hand for the annoucnement, will reprise his role as Captain Jack Sparrow. Erik Davis has noticed that a pirate novel with the title “On Stranger Tides” exists, although it is unknown if it is related to the new Disney film. Here is the synopsis from the novel:

Puppeteer John Chandagnac, bound for Jamaica to recover stolen money from his uncle, becomes Jack Shandy after pirates attack his ship and force him to join their crew. Shandy’s struggle to accept his new life grounds the story for readers, even as Blackbeard and vodun magicians whisk everyone away to dreamlike lands where the Fountain of Youth itself awaits. The chaotic sea battles sing, though at times key events happen so quickly that they get lost in the shuffle as Jack tries to comprehend where he’s going and what’s at stake.

Most people expect the fourth film to follow Sparrow’s adventure to find the Fountain of Youth, a treasure revealed at the conclusion of the third film.

The fourth installment of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise is gearing up to begin shooting around April or May 2010 for a tenative Summer 2011 release. Disney has previously said that the plan is for Pirates 4 to “hopefully be the first of another trilogy,” which would be shot by itself, and not back-to-back like the previous Pirates sequels. No word on who will direct the new film. Series helmer Gore Verbinski was originally attached to another Pirates film, but left to direct a big screen adaptation of the video game Bioshock. But as you probably know by now, Bioshock got passed to another filmmaker.

  • Arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrgh! I be the first to comment on this post! Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum.

Great now we have f1rsters at /film.

go back to aint it cool tyson
  • Anybody know who's coming back for this one? I heard Bloom isn't, which is fine by me, but Pirates is nothing without Depp...
  • maarch
they are actually making this film because depp wanted to make another one... so yeah they havent confirmed it but the fact he said he would come back for a fourth one is preatty much a dead giveaway that's he's gonna be in it.
  • Keira & Bloom aren't coming back, but those are the only two I know.
  • Depp showed up at announcement at D23, so Depp is in.
  • Octoberist
i'm strangely excited for this one.
  • Troy
Yup, I'm interested as well. Carrying one plot between Pirates 2 and 3 -- and having Bloom and Knightley in it, despite their characters getting a perfectly fine sendoff in the 1st movie -- no doubt led to the mess that was those two sequels. But a new film, free of that baggage, could work.
  • MickJ
Totally agree. I could watch Jack Sparrow grocery shopping for two hours and be entertained.
  • The_Kid
The synopsis for the On stranger tides novel sounds like it might be inspiration for this one with the whole fountain of youth connection.
  • South_Texas_Terror
I must be the only one that is tired of the pirates franchise. The second movie was one of the worst Ive ever seen.
  • Last time I checked Rob Marshall was in talks for the directing chair, I'm pretty sure that's still so.

I've also read that the Fountain of Youth storyline was confirmed and that their would be a Captain Nemo-type villain who had more modern technology.

    Zzzzzzzzz....

This is a rip-off! Tim Powers' novel is so incredibly brilliant and great! I can only hope that Disney will use themes from the book and incorporate them into Pirates 4. If you want a great read, PLEASE pick up Tim Powers book!
  • Slatters
The book is awful, though considering how terrible the third movie was, I wouldn't be surprised if they cribbed another shitty story for their precious franchise.
  • Anthony
How can you really think "On Stranger Tides" is awful? SeriouslY?
  • Hmmm... I don't know what to make of this. The first Pirates was fantastic. All characters were awesome, and none stole the scene too much. Jack Sparrow was an immensely entertaining co-star. I felt the latter film highlighted him far too much, whilst destroying Bloom and Knightley's characters... They tried to make them so huge. The first was small scale, an Indiana Jones hunt on the high seas, with a fixed Maguffin. The second could have followed, but it got too convoluted and then ended on a cliff hanger. I would have preferred 3 relatively standalone films, a single Maguffin for each one, and the stars sharing the limelight rather than giving it to Depp.
  • The movies stopped being good after "Curse of the Black Pearl." Meh.

Don't get me wrong, I love all the Pirate movies, yes even the sequels, but this is kinda dumb. Unless they make this one really funny, I can't see myself getting much more enjoyment out of this series. I'm really over the "seriousness" that came into play with the last two films.

Um, we could only be so lucky if Tim Powers (author of On Stranger Tides) was somehow involved.

Not going to happen, sadly. Hollywood is not that smart.
  • Dan Berry
may involve some crap with the moon colliding with the earth and messing up the tides. or the new world. whatever. it'll suck.
  • TestType
Wow. This is quite a surprising development. I'm a big fan of the novel "On Stranger Tides" and the author Tim Powers and I'm very well aware of how heavily that book influenced the writers of the Pirates movies (also Ron Gilbert creator of Monkey Island). So I was pretty shocked when they revealed the fountain of youth plot for the sequel at the end of the last movie.

I felt it was quite a rip off at the time, but now it's quite obvious they've bought the rights to the novel to adapt to the PotC story. I'm a bit disappointed since I always hoped On Stranger Tides would be made a movie sometime. I can only hope they will retain most of the storyline, only replacing the main character of Shandy with Jack Sparrow as much as possible.

And man do I hope Tim Powers is somehow involved in the process.
  • Great to see Depp challenging himself for a change. Here I was worried we'd see another Sweeny Scissorhands Wonka in the Hat-type character. THANKFULLY it's just Jack Sparrow for a fourth time...
  • thorofthunder
"On Stranger Tides" (in pirate, of course) roughly translates to "I'm Going to Suck."
  • Weyland_Yutani
    cynical, cynical people.

I liked the sequels just fine. They were sequels to a story that was never written with sequels in mind. Over the top in numerous ways, but still a whole lot of fun. Who doesn't like a good Kraken story?

You have to admit, they at least had the guts to kill off a main character in the end. A lot of freedom now to concentrate a story on some pirating. I wish they had the guts to start the Sparrow story fresh, without anything from the first films - just more of his personal mythology and history. Opportunity for new characters and new fun.

Great. Another pointless sequel to a (lets be honest) shitty franchise. Yeah, but depps reprising a reasonably funny drunk for the fourth fucking time! Great lets all queue up at le cinema and watch this shit fest unfold! Brilliant, my life is dead!! P.s I hate jack sparrow.

quit being such an ass and keep your shitty comments at home.
  • papasanchez
Your right. I'm sorry. Didn't know this was a positive comments only site. It's only my opinion on it, don't take it personally but I am still sorry if I upset you, honestly.
  • Nimbette
Definitely the fountain of youth will be featured because when I was in St. Augustine a year ago, the tour leaders mentioned that Johnny Depp had been there filming on the fort they have there. They had some chase scenes. So, part of it has already been filmed over a year ago.
  • Crazy Robot
Not really looking foward to this. But yet here I am commenting on it.
  • kzap
Oh no, why do I have a bad feeling about this?
The first one was an okay popcorn movie (which I have on DVD) but I really don't like the second and third, hopefully this starts it's own self-contained story and is a a good reboot but I doubt it.

On Stranger Tides is one of Tim Power's finest novels - if Disney has had the good sense to get Tim involved, since they have, ahem, taken the title already, then this film might actually be pretty decent.
  • ben
hey there wat about geoffrey rush coming back
  • ben
well, does anyone know that geoffrey rush is going to be in the 4th movie
  • Rosy Jode
