And the Oscar Goes to…Roger Corman!

Here’s a money-making idea if you’ve got an extra bit of time this weekend: print up a bunch of little gold stickers shaped like the Oscar statue, with text that reads: “From Academy Award Winning Filmmaker Roger Corman.” Then sell them to the distributors who are going to have to revamp the box art on literally hundreds of DVDs after the Academy bestows an honorary Oscar upon the prolific and influential producer.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced that Corman will be one of four people to receive special awards this year. Corman will receive an Honorary Award with two others: cinematographer Gordon Willis and actress Lauren Bacall. Producer John Calley will receive the Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award. All but Corman have previously been nominated for Oscars, but have never won. (Which is a crime; how can the guy who shot the first two Godfather movies not have an Oscar?) Roger Corman, no surprise, has never been nominated for an Oscar. But many filmmakers and actors he mentored and gave early breaks to have: Guys like Francis Ford Coppola, Jonathan Demme, James Cameron and Martin Scorsese.

And if you think the guy who made The Wasp Woman doesn’t deserve an Oscar, first up, what are you thinking? Then, consider that he also made Little Shop of Horrors, Death Race 2000 and enough great drive-in movies to entertain the entire country for weeks running. Beyond that, Corman’s famously fast, down and dirty production methods were taught to the directors listed above and many more. His influence, both in a creative and business sense, reaches far beyond the already impressive list of films on his producer’s resume. (Almost 400 movies bear that credit.) There isn’t a genre filmmaker working today who hasn’t been influenced by Corman, and I think you’d be hard-pressed to find any major US director who hasn’t been influenced by him in some manner. This award is well-deserved.

Such a well-deserved award for Mr. Corman. The dude may not have made the best films but they sure were fun and chocked full of B-Movie goodness. Also, the guy did so much with the little he had it's just amazing.

You're not quite right Russ. Corman, Bacall and Willis will receive Honorary Oscars and Calley will receive the Thalberg Award (which is a bust of the late Mr. Thalberg).

    You're totally right. Thanks, correcting.

I was so freaking happy to hear this news today. No joke, I had said a couple of times on Facebook that Roger Corman should win an Honorary Oscar just for the fact that he's given so many legendary filmmakers their big breaks. Coppola, Scorsese, Demme, Cameron, Dante, Allan Arkush, Ron Howard, Pete Bogdanovich, John Sayles, Curits Hanson and even as recent as Timbur Bakmembetov (sp?) Apparently the Academy was reading my Facebook status updates after all.

And good on for Lauren Bacall and Gordon Willis getting Honorary Oscars as well. The only thing is that they won't be honored during the telecast, which is a shame because these three in particular deserve montages. Would be so subversive to see a montage of Corman clips during the ceremony.

Awesome news. This really made my day.

This is a great move by the academy. I always figured they would never do something like this because of the movies he has made but I'm very happy they are.

The movies The Intruder we did with Shatner is terrific and a real interesting what if.
  • That's great news.

Believe it or not, I took a film and visual culture course at UC Riverside on Roger Corman's work. We would watch about 2 of his films a week which included Boxcar Bertha, The Wasp Woman, Swamp Women, and Bucket of Blood.
  • Great news for Corman and definitely deserved.

As a young asspiring actress I interviewd for Roger Corman in1960. He did not hire me, but he asked for my phone number...the rest is history. While many young aspsiring actresses of my time were sleeping with producers nd directors to get a part in a movie, Roger Corman is the only producer, director I slept with...I did not do it to get a part in one of his films, rather, because he was so great! That he would be an enormous success was a given. I am thrilled he is going to recieive the long overdue Oscar.
