The Road Pushed Back To Thanksgiving

The Road

Just recieved word from my local San Francisco reps that Dimension Films will be pushing back the release date of The Road, yet again, this time for a Thanksgiving release - November 25th 2009. This really doesn’t make any sense at all, as the Thanksgiving slot is not only overcrowded as is, but also features another Weinstein Co release, the musical Nine. Could this mean that the Weinstein’s are considering moving Nine back to a Christmas date?

Other films set to hit theaters on November 25th include Fantastic Mr. Fox (wide expansion), Ninja Assassin,  Old Dogs, and the NY/LA limited engagement of Disney’s  The Princess and the Frog. Plus, I’ve also heard rumblings that Paramount was considering moving Jason Reitman’s Up in the Air for a late November platform release.

its already been delayed till january here in the U.K
this really had better be bloody worth the wait.

    They really are desperate.

Are you kidding me? Do the Weinteins take pleasure in sabotaging their own films or something? October was perfect, why release it with all those other films? It just does not make any sense at all. They must be too busy counting their Inglourious Basterds money to think straight. This is gonna be The Mist all over again, a great dark and atmospheric thriller being sent off to die while we all eat turkey.

I just want to see this damned movie. *sobs*
  • First Shutter Island and now The Road. So much for October being an awesome movie month. I guess as long as I get either A Serious Man or Where The Wild Things Are in October, I'll be okay.
  • makes some sense.. where the wild things are was also set for October 16th, and undoubtedly would have crushed the road's box office.

I don't know about you, but I didn't see Where The Wild Things Are exactly stealing all of The Road's audience. This is a VERY different film, though both are somewhat dark. It was a perfect time IMO. October 16 was looking to be a great day. Also, WTWTA will not dominate the box office. I predict around 30 million opening day gross.

Parents are going to be weary of bringing the little ones into WTWTA.
  • Itri12
Opening day 30 million? Wow, that's incredible. I didn't know we had the next Transformers on our hands here.
  • cablebfg
    Opening weekend. Typo.
  • cablebfg-

thats what i thought at first.. but WTTWA attracts a HUGE audience, important to note - arguably more of an older generation than kids... unless you read the road and are dying to see the film, i would say the majority of moviegoers, including the roads target audience, will be going to see WTWTA that weekend..
Personally, I read and loved The Road, this has been one of my most anticipated movies for years, and even I was on the edge for what movie to see that day..

Hey 9/11(really?), I think you're over-estimating how popular Where the Wild Things Are is gonna be. Sure it will do moderate business but this is not your average family film. Also, do you really think opening against Ninja Assassin, Old Dogs, and Fantastic Mr. Fox is better? I highly doubt it.
  • cablebfg
I was going to see both The Road and WTWTA on opening day. The 16th happens to also be my birthday, so I was ecstatic. I dont think WTWTA will attract a huge audience. I have had lengthy discussions with friends, and while most are excited to see it, they have run into opposition with some other people that are afraid the film wont live up to the book.

Also, dont expect little children to flock to this film. If it was animated, it might be a different story. Word of mouth of little ones being frightened by the film will spread fast with parents.

Good thing the Fantastic Mr. Fox looks like total garbage.
  • freemachine
That's cool. Gives me something to look forward to on Thanksgiving weekend besides turkey, again.
  • FUCK! Oh well, hopefully this means it'll get a wider release and I'll have a better chance of actually seeing the damn thing.

While I'm extremely disappointed that The Road has been pushed back AGAIN, it does make a lot of sense for Nine to be pushed back, just to alleviate some confusion when theaters are carrying two films with the same title. They really should let 9 run its course in theaters before releasing Nine if they don't want to hurt its box office draw.

Clearly they want this film to be in the running for Oscars, and half-assed films are only considered for Oscars if they are released a few months before.

The Best Picture nominations last year were an absolute joke. Benjamin Button? The Reader? Frost/Nixon? Slumdog winning?

NONE of those films will be remembered years from now.
