After Heath Ledger’s death, Terry Gilliam came up with a brilliant plan to salvage his film The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus: he would keep the footage he’d already shot of Ledger’s character in the movie’s ‘real world’ sequences, and cast a new actor, or as it turned out, actors, to fill out the film’s fantasy sequences. Gilliam recently revealed that one of the actors who was interested in the job was Tom Cruise. Obviously, he didn’t get the job. Why not?

Gilliam mentioned Cruise’s interest to Total Film:

I’m not sure if it was Tom or his agent (who put Cruise forward for the role). I know there was a period when Tom’s agents were keen. The thing is, I was only interested in people who were friends of Heath. Simple as that. I wanted to keep it in the family.

That it was Cruise’s people who put the actor’s name into the ring as a possibility isn’t a surprise, not only because that’s their job, but because the timeline for the recasting was right. Cruise needed serious image rehab, and stepping in to help Gilliam finish Heath Ledger’s last film would have been a great PR move, if the deal could be made to look like it wasn’t just a great PR move. As it turns out, his brief role in Tropic Thunder was probably a far better move when it came to regaining public interest in the wake of that crazy Scientology vid and the famous Oprah couch-jumping appearance.

I can’t help but be curious about what Cruise would have done for Imaginarium, though. I’m fascinated by the guy; there might not be a weirder major star working today. And when he’s right for the role, I genuinely like his work. (Eyes Wide Shut, for which he was perfect, and Magnolia both spring to mind.) Gilliam’s choice to go with Johnny Depp and two friends of Legder (Jude Law and Colin Farrell) was almost certainly the right one, but still I’ve got trailer voice in my head, intoning ‘in a world where Tom Cruise works with Terry Gilliam…’.

It would not have worked at all - but thanks, Tom, for trying anyway.

Indeed, there probably aren't three better choices for the particular parts they have to play than Depp, Law and Farrell.

    Exactly

Tom would have taken everyone out of the movie. With this cast of friends idea at least terry could finish the tale and get his vision across without people fuming.

I don't think that Tom Cruise would have been bad in this, I think he's a terrific actor despite his scientology induced insanity.
Still, I respect Gilliam for keeping it in the family. I think that's very touching.
  • Does it matter?
Probably not that great of a choice for this film, The four actors in this all have a specific look. Not a Tom Cruise style look, though
  • lol is this the twilight zone? a terry gilliam post not by brendon connelly?
  • I think it might've been the same, but about a foot shorter and with a valley Nazi accept.

Glad Gilliam went with the choices he did I doubt Cruise would have been to fit smoothly into the film.

Tom cruise sucks. I would sacrifice him and katie holmes to bring back heath.

    me too!

I think the main problem with that is he'd just come across as a mere salesman/lawyer (see The Firm, A Few Good Men, etc) rather than something purely Gilliam-esque

Gilliam, being a smart man, no doubt realized that TC is cinematic poison. TC CAN be decent...Born on the 4th of July, Magnolia, even Minority Report...but for the most part his bizarre rants and very public displays of ego proceed him.

There are very few actors that I despise, and TC is one of them. (And my hatred predates said rants and ego displays.) I even tried Valkyrie and found that so many other actors in that film were fantastic--Wilkinson, Nighy--and then there's ole TC with his stupid American accent and complete lack of talent.

Yet, he goes on making movies and making headlines. Figures.

    Ack!
  • People forget Tom Cruise has delivered superb performances in many films. They can't get past the tabloid mag they read yesterday. When someone is profiled like that, their character is hard to spot, when you just KNOW it is Tom Cruise up there on the screen.
