Guy Ritchie to Direct Lobo

Lobo

Guy Ritchie (Sherlock Holmes, Snatch) has signed on to direct a live-action adaptation of the DC Comics series Lobo for Warner Bros. Joel Silver, Akiva Goldsman and Andrew Rona will produce.

The character first appeared in June 1983, created by Roger Slifer and Keith Giffen, Lobo was an alien who works as an interstellar mercenary and bounty hunter. He later had a huge resurgence as an anti-hero biker in the 1990’s. Which incarnation will be featured in the big screen adaptation? Variety describes a film version which is closer to the incarnation popularized in the 1990’s: “a seven-foot tall, blue-skinned, indestructible and heavily muscled anti-hero who drives a pimped out motorcycle, lands on Earth in search of four fugitives who are bent on wreaking havoc,” and “teams with a small town teenaged girl to stop the creatures.”

I’ve always liked Ritchie’s style much more than his stories, and rarely felt that one complimented the other. I think the DC Comic Universe will be a good test for Ritchie to employ his awesome cinematic touch to further the art of the comic book movie genre, which in recent years have become less stylized in more realistic. I feel Ritchie’s style is perfect for a contemporary comic book adaptation because, while it may be fantastical and unrealistic, the grain and gruffness, help ground it in the reality of the world he creates on screen.

That said, I think I’d rather see Lobo not touch down to Earth in his big screen journey, but we knew this was coming. Back in April, Latino Review took a look at the script, which was originally penned by Angel Dean Lopez, and revised by Don Payne (The Simpsons, My Super Ex-Girlfriend) and Jerrold E. Brown (Prey). Here is a recap from Hunter’s previous post:

Lobo’s origins as a hellish, discarded infant are said to be revealed briefly, while the plot centers on him tracking down the four worst, alien criminals in a universe gone to shit. The LR guys take issue with the plot moving to Earth, and compare this twist to Masters of the Universe. Yeah, that’s terrible. They also jokingly point out that Lobo is so much the “badass” that he guns a motorcycle through space. Some of the violence and nudity sound intact—a requisite comparison to Heavy Metal—but overall, it reeks of big-franchise compromise.

Warner Bros hopes to begin production early next year, and is aiming for a PG-13 rating.

Finally, some good news. I could really see this working. We need more superheroes in space. And Lobo's a freaking bad ass.
  • Norbert
You can really see a working pg-13 lobo? You've got to be kidding me. Ritchie is a hack that made 2 good movies in his carier (well it's basicly one movie) and making lobo pg-13? Someone needs to start a hunting season for the accountants of the big studios.
  • zebrat
would you like some cheese wit that?
  • plagueoftruth
I'll agree that Ritchie has had far from a perfect career, but I personally think that those "two good movies" are spectacular so I'm willing to give him a chance. I'm also happy that a bigger name director is attached for this rather than some actual hack.

As far as the PG13 issue goes, I would rather see it R to be sure. Especially with Lobo. But your indication that the movie can't possibly be good just because it is PG13 is rubbish. You can get away with a lot with PG13 these days.
  • SauloFuentes
While I agree that you can make an awesome movie at PG13, I think Lobo should be a hard R. Even though Ive seen Lobo work for kids on Superman the animated series and Justice League. But the comics are just so dirty and gory. Its basically Heavy Metal with Lobo.
  • Sendym
Lobo in PG-13? Its not Lobo. Lobo is all about violence, blood, guns and dirty language.
  • Good to see Guy Ritchie stepping even further out of his box.

Lobo should be a R-Rated movie oh well

heres a question is Lobo going to be co-produce by Legendary Pictures. Legendary Pictures has really helped WB to push to make comic book movies and graphic novel.
  • I heard they were trying to get an R rated Lobo but I doubt WB will try another one after Watchmen. Would be nice though.
  • Guest
thanks for the info but i found it stupid that WB wont do a R-Rated movie. we know Watchmen was R-Rated and it did not do well in the cinema. but it did not do well in cinemas not because its a R-Rated movie it because it was not a graphic novel that should be turn into a film. if Watchmen was a PG-13 it would still fail for WB doesnt matter how much money they make back from the movie.

do Warner Bros forget that Blade 1 and 2 was a R-Rated movie and that was a success, also i know i left out Blade 3 but we need to forget that never happen cause it was directed by David S. Goyer we all know he aint a good director LOL.
  • David Goyer's directing is questionable and hope he does redeem himself with Magneto but only time will tell.

As for WB, yeah they could and should have a few Comic Book adaptations that are Rated R, this being one, and should promote the hell out of it.

One reason why besides Watchmen is the latest Punisher movie failing miserably with an R as well.

Mickey Rourke would be the perfect Lobo but with two comic characters under his belt (as well as a more respectable career recently) I could see him turning it down.
Gerard Butler would be a good choice too. He worked with Ritchie on 'Rock-N-Rolla' and he still hasn't had his superhero role (I don't count '300.')
    I don't see Ritchie going with a no-name.
  • tenno
I'd take either of those two.
  • the_main_man
Gerard Butler would be a great choice
  • graham7x
    ron pearlman maybe
  • EvanJDeBiase
Hellboy? i doubt they would have him
  • Octoberist
at this rate, Ron Pearlman is getting nearer to 60. I doubt he'll do it. I think Hellboy might be his last stint wearing make-up.
  • It will be. Del Toro confirmed a few months ago that there will not be a Hellboy III because Perlman refuses to don the makeup again. From what I gathered, it might have been causing some issues in figuring out the Hobbit but I'm not sure why it would. I would assume he'd be playing Smaug and that would be voice only most likely. If anything they might have Serkis do motion capture for certain things (like they did with King Kong) but I doubt it.
  • PG-13? Really?

Guess because of Watchmen Warner is chickening out.
  • Guest
i agree with you on that Watchmen really got the people at Warner Bros scared to do a R-Rated comic book movies
  • tenno
I wish Matthew Vaughn was working with Richie again, hasn't been the same without him, and the addition of Akiva Goldsman does little to instill confidence. I am a fan of Lobo though and still think Guy has some talent in there, just really disappointed with last few offerings.
  • EvanJDeBiase
Ritchie is one of my favorite directors. I think the comedy and cinematic storytelling he puts into each film is breath taking.
  • Meli_V
Lobo, PG-13, figures - at least pushing the limits of PG-13 is popular. I definitely think Guy Ritchie is good fit.
  • ashleyej20
I think Mickey Rourke would be great as Lobo!
  • babyjaypan
it needs to be rated R and in space
  • BigWhiteRyan
Yes and yes. To me, if it isn't both of those things, this movie is a total waste of time.

That, and Guy Ritchie? What a hack. My dream would have been either Terry Gilliam or Guillermo Del Toro, which was probably unrealistic. Somebody with a weird imagination though would have been nice, not a guy whose films are nothing but flash cuts and cockney accents. (Oh, and Sherlock Holmes jumping from huge, fiery explosions. Sheesh.)
  • Rob0729
I assuming Vinnie Jones has the inside track for the lead.
  • Dysthymia83
Lobo being PG-13 makes about as much sense as a PG-13 Punisher...NONE!
  • The_man_who_wasn't_there
Perfect time for Rob Zombie to make the jump from director to actor.
  • Octoberist
Image if they even consider him. That would be crazy.
  • BigWhiteRyan
Actually, I would have rather Rob Zombie direct it. He would be a better fit than Ritchie.
  • existenz
He looks just like Lobo, it would be perfect. Needs to hit the gym though.
  • Octoberist
In regards to the concerns of having a 'Teenaged girl' for a sidekick, let me say this:

If they picked a Supermodel type to play the teenager, then I say YES only because that alone would fit the TONE of the movie: Over the Top, Heavy Metal type stuff.

In some ways, this could be a Grindhouse type film, with comic book characters..and a pg 13 rating.
  • mitchellgmg
pg-13 !?!? that's ridiculous lobo has always been violent and has had nudity i really dont see this working out
  • capawesome
Yay! at Ritchie doing it. Boooooo! at it being PG-13
  • Rockie
    i feel the same way
  • DP
SO many people have told me a Lobo movie cant be made, My dreams have come true. Now all we need is Duane Johnson (aka The Rock) cast as Lobo! He is big mean and funny enough!
  • Guest
it wont be The Rock cause he is rumored to play Black Adam in Captain Marvel if WB still doing that movie.

Jason Statham or Gerard Butler for the role for Lobo
  • capawesome
Statham as Lobo? Are you shitting me? lol
  • plagueoftruth
Statham would be the shit. I hadn't even though of that.
  • The role seems to be right up Jason Statham's alley and his past associations with Guy Ritchie should put him at the head of the queue, even though he can't act his way out a paper bag.
  • Travis McGee
I can already tell that this film will bomb. The PG-13 rating will destroy it. That and the fact that it will take place on Earth.

I would much rather see Lobo as a secondary character in a Green Lantern film. As the "cops" of the Universe, they should butt-heads with the bounty hunters on a frequent basis.
  • turok1134
    No way! This is awesome!!!!!!
  • The_Kid
YESSSSSSSSE, a thousand times yes. Thisis the one coolest things i've heard all week. The only I'm not liking is the aiming for the PG-13 rating, but it worked for he dark knight so we'll see. I'm officially excited about this movie.
  • Sendym
yea, ok, if u thing so.... but... BATMAN IS NOT LOBO!!!! Batman is hero. He do the right stuffs and all the right things around it. Lobo, on the other side destroys everything, kills everyone, then he eats them and then he laught. He destroyed entire population of his own home planet for god sake! PG-13 may work for some good hero, but not for the Main Man!!!
  • Jawmuncher
I can't believe Lobo has commented here and slapped someone. Then after that drive away in his space motorcycle.

*I don't think anyone knows what I am talking about, but it deals with a comment in the last lobo article someone made*
  • With Joel Silver in the front seat to produce Lobo this will be a cool movie, i cant wait.
  • Enthropii
    PG-13!! WHY?!
  • buttlover
ugh..bad-ass motorcycle riding anti-hero hunting four bad guys on earth witha sidekick...sounds like ghost rider 2. nic cage for lobo!!
  • existenz
    Ghost Rider II! Exactly.

I think this is one of those ideas that might sound cool in the abstract, but would just look ridiculous on screen. Some muscled-out actor riding a motorcycle through space? Then teaming up with a teen Earth girl to fight some silly villains? With PG-13 violence?

I'm already having flashbacks to Ghost Rider, Doom, Punisher II, Spawn and every other crap adaptation of the past 10 years. Maybe if Alex Proyas was attached I'd be interested, but this is just a paycheck for Guy Ritchie.
