Captain EO To Return To Disneyland?

Michael Jackson Francis Ford Coppola and George Lucas

Miceage is reporting that the Francis Ford Coppola-directed/George Lucas-produced sci-fi action 3D musical short film Captain EO will be returning to Disneyland’s Tomorrowland. Apparently the return of Captain EO will be announced by Jay Rasulo at the D23 Expo, and the film will begin playing again in the Southern California theme park in January 2010, as a tribute to Michael Jackson.

The 17-minute film cost a record $17 million in 1986, a cost of about one million dollars per minute of film, this was, minute for minute, the most expensive motion picture of all time. If you adjust that number for inflation, it rises to almost $35 million. That’s a lot of money for a $17 million short film. Another fun factoid is that Steven Spielberg was originally signed on to direct the movie but had to cancel due to scheduling conflicts with his other film projects. The film opened in Epcot and Disneyland in mid-September 1986, Tokyo Disneyland in March 1987, and Disneyland Park (Paris) in 1992). All four installations were closed down by 1998.

The story followed Captain Eo and his rugged ragtag crew who went on a mission to deliver a special gift to a wicked queen (played by Anjelica Huston) who lives on a dark, desolate world. Captain EO can be found online on many of the video sharing websites.
The film featured two songs, “We Are Here to Change the World” and “Another Part of Me” by Michael Jackson. The action on the screen was recreated for the live audience using lasers, laser impacts, smoke effects, and starfields that filled the theater. The presentation was replaced by Honey I Shrunk the Audience, another live interaction 3D short.

For the record Honey I Shrunk the Audience SUCKED SOOOO BAD!! Pathetic!
  • Can we all chip in and get MOONWALKER rendered in 3D please?? I wanna see MJ morph into a car using the third dimension.

It should never have been removed from Disneyland. It's a great film and Michael obviously enjoyed making it. Why not also release it on DVD?
  • Joe
Disney channel actually released it on TV for the first time EVER during Disneyland's 40h anniversary back in 1990. Only Disneyland fanatics watched it & recorded on VHS, lol. New EO memorabilia will be sold, "EO Returns," & in 2010 it will be released on DVD & blu-ray, only in Disneyland only!

Disneyland will make announcement of its return during D23, the current attraction, 'Honey I Shrunk the Audience, is being shut down this week because WDI is installing new Captain EO effects in the theater for Thur's private performance for Jay Rasulo and other hot shots in Anaheim for the D23 Expo. The show is to remain all through 2010, Disneyland's 55th anniversary year!!!

Look at George Lucas trying to look serious in that picture.
  • Ashitaka
He has that exact same expression in every picture, like Lindsay Lohan does in her pictures

Somebody doesn't see anything wrong with having a film starring a pedophile in a family theme park?

And please, all you Jackson fanatics, don't give me this: "He's never been convicted." crap. I don't have to see a fire to know one is burning, I just have to see the smoke..

    Yuck, time ten.

"And please, all you Jackson fanatics, don't give me this: "He's never been convicted." crap. I don't have to see a fire to know one is burning, I just have to see the smoke.." -Tee

The boy who claimed MJ to head back to court the 2nd time around for molestation. The boy ended up not having cancer, & the mother had a history of false claims for using her child to get money.

The first molestation case back in 1993... The boy's mother had a history of bankruptcy too, and 80% of the witnesses, had a history of breaking the law. Today, she's in jail, LOL.

LOL Do you call the fire department every time you see smoke, too? Do you ever consider that it's more likely harmless smoke from a factory or chimney? Yeah, there's a lot of smoke surrounding a big fat nothing. Don't go see EO if you don't support him. I'm sure Disney will cry itself to the bank because of losing your contribution.

    lol.
now hes dead I think we supposed to forget he was a enamored with children is such a probably wrong way. Pretty sure that is how it is supposed to work.

But seriously he was a messed up dude....and it was probably all his dad/brothers fault.
  • jenjen9902
What "MOTHER" would accept pay off FROM the supposed person that molested her child? I do not believe for one second that it was NOT about money. I would have wanted the person locked away! I would NEVER as a mother of two girls accept money from a molester if it was a true situation.

there's an issue with that rumor from Miceage... and that rumor has been going around the parks since July: there are no clean copies of the film anymore. Whoever is in charge of that stuff, Archives I suppose, has nothing that is clean enough to copy and use in the parks. They have a better copy of Captain Eeyore than they do of Eo.
  • JennyO
You are a moron. Do you think they would ever just throw away the original copy of the movie with as much as they spent on making it? The common sense in this world is slipping away. They kept it in a safe place just for occasion, the passing of Michael, I say they are genius. What would draw more revenue than people wanting a glimpse of Michael again especially in his prime?
  • Peter R
Disney may not have a copy anymore but I bet Francis Ford Coppola or George Lucas still have something that can be used. They will want to go back to the original stuff anyway so they can clean it up a bit (ala SW Special Edition).

Getting this out them usually would probably be difficult, but with MJ's passing I bet they will fork something over.
  • Gelman
UH, oh. This can only mean a 3-D Jar Jar.... Don't give them any ideas!
  • Peter R
Didn't Lucas threaten to release to theaters the all the SW movies again in 3D sometime this next decade?
3D Jar Jar may soon be coming to an IMAX near you whether you like it or not!
  • Gelman
They could always just get Janet to reshoot it. No one will know the difference.
  • Octoberist
I cannot wait! I love Captain EO.
  • bomberman
Shroom sales are going to spike in January
  • MediaFiend
As a Disney shareholder I see this as nothing but a cynical attempt to boost waning attendance at the theme parks. Well done Disney.
  • Peter R
"Captain EO" is really awkward to watch. Not gonna lie. Not because he is dead or anything like that...his acting just does not work in any way for me in this movie. I think this thing would have rocked had almost anyone else been in it....but instead MJ took the reins and made best buddies with all the puppets....used his really awkward voice and...well you get the idea. I know the whole thing was about him and not about the movie so no way anyone else could have done it...but really no reason for the whole flying scene at the beginning...the elaborate dance thing is fine...whatever.

If they wanted this to be awesome should have gotten some Billy Idol action...

"Honey I shrunk the Audience" is way better, though I doubt any 2000's kid has even seen the movies it references. At least Michael Jackson is fresh in their mind I suppose...though not really in a good way.
  • totsy
You people who hate MJ are crazy. Im a smart person not like you haters/ losers, this is comming from me im 10 my mom let me write this message. Why do you guys hate him so much i know he did some wrong stuff but that dosent mean you shouldent like him...........................losers. Losers, losers, losers. Mienie's mienie's mienie's. Hater's hater's hater's.
  • JennyO
You people are crazy, let me guess you listen to the extremely liberal media and it aided your decision about this film, and Michael without researching the facts for yourself. Captain EO was ten times better that Honey I Shrunk the Audience, are you kidding? Your opinion to me is as worthless as a tit on a bull, and most would agree with me. You just sound like haters to me. How can anyone deny this short film? Basically, just Star Wars starring Michael Jackson.
  • I'm sorry, Im a total sucker for anything 3D - I even sat through Journey to the Center Of the Earth - but "Honey I Shrunk..." was almost impossibly boring. Captain EO was so much better it's not even funny. Yeah, Jacko's acting is iffy, but the sets, costumes, choreography and 3D design were fantastic. Can't wait to see it again.
  • Octoberist
You have to give kids credit in what they watch. It mostly depends on the parents however. If the parents are younger, most likely they will show their kids the stuff that they loved when they were young.

But then there's people like my cousin. She's great and all, but her 5 year old kid didn't know who Bugs Bunny was. Of course, I had to school the little man on Looney Tunes ala DVD!
  • Gelman
I vaguely remember watching EO when I was a kid. Kind of a weird experience. I remember the flying red guy being neat in 3D, and I can remember all the dumb kids (myself included) reaching up as if we could touch it. Ha, ha. I'm not sure how it will translate now.
  • Ashitaka
I saw it when I was six I think - I just remember MJ and all the other puppets dancing and singing on some kind of space dock stage. I preferred the "Muppets in 3D" at MGM - remember the bubbles that Fozzy Bear blows, the pie, and then the canon blast at the end! Oh man
  • CyT
Heh, I so remember reaching up to grab that little furball too :)
  • plagueoftruth
Had that exact experience. I bet everyone did.
