Video Blog: Disney’s Acquisition of Marvel

Disney Marvel

Early this morning, every fanboy and fangirl woke up to some shocking news… The Walt Disney company announced they were buying Marvel Entertainment for $4 Billion in cash and stock. Yes, $4 Billion. While some fanboys immediately thought this was the worst thing they’ve ever heard, others were excited by the possibilities of a merger between these two entertainment juggernauts. After all, combining all the characters of the Marvel universe with a company that owns theme parks, cable channels, and makes movies, the potential for even more Marvel characters getting a shot at prime time or a movie screen just increased.

Since this news was the type that Steve (Collider) and I would talk about on the phone, we decided to record one of our video blogs to share our conversation with all of you. So if you’d like to watch what Steve and I think about the deal and why we both think this could be a good thing… take a look after the jump.

I for one, welcome our new Disney overlords.

P.S. I think Beast would've made a better Beast than The Thing.
  • You are so correct, I would have went nuts out loud if that were Hank's face up there on the beast.
  • yeah that would be awesome! someone needs to photoshop that now.

I'm excited for the new Kingdom Hearts crossover possibilities
  • boomboxdeluxe
You're stupid. A marvel kingdom hearts crossover would be the worst idea ever. Fuck everyone who thinks that woul be coool
  • How come no one has talked about the potential of Disney comic books? I'm pretty sure Dark Horse is no longer going to publish them.
  • Tom
Probably because the comic book industry is in the toilet now and has been in the toilet for years. Comics are just seen as pitch documents now, so the tail would have to be wagging the kennel for Disney to give a mouse's ass about expanding into comics. They've done that before and couldn't make it work. The only reason I can see then doing that now is to try out new concepts in a cheap, pitchable format.

heres a question guys we will see Disney/Marvel of Luke Cage and Black Panther cause i doubt that will happen
  • A serious live action show about The Marvel Universe would be awesome, that's a great idea.

I was actually hoping Disney could help out and try to get back some of those characters that aren't owned by Marvel right now. Couldn't they essentially do a buyout and give the existing owner some type of pay out from the box office for the next few movies and then eventually fully own them?

I just really want to see a good X-men or Spider-man movie from this acquisition sometime in the near future.

you both wrong it was Blade that kicked it all of
  • I'd have to say Blade got the ball rolling while X-men made sure the superhero genre would stick around with its more positive reviews and better box office.

Lets face it, most comic book movies need the extra violence to fulfill it core story. Pixar makes movies that are watchable by all ages and most of these well known characters won't have a chance.

Also, I don't see comic book adaptations ever leaving the main stream light. It's a form of story telling like novel adaptations. What will change is the same character remakes (eventually). Comics are becoming more acceptable as reading literature and people will want something new... But everyone knows how long Micky Mouse took.

Anyway, after Disney makes back the money it spent on Marvel, I see it acquiring Nintendo. Then moving on to foods like cereal and if possible, clouds in the sky.
  • Disney is known as the studio of "princesses;" they already had the "girl" demographic. They don't produce much that the "boy" demographic would appreciate. Purchasing Marvel definitely rectifies that, almost immediately.

I'm not at all concerned about the deal.
  • topheavy
    I'll wait and see..
  • I think it's going to be very good for Marvel.
  • AB
Wow if they continue the Kingdom Hearts series this could have very odd, but amazing possibilities.
  • thatguyrom
I can't wait until The Punisher shows up in a future Kingdom Hearts game!

Oh and I prefer Conan O'Brien's "Thingerella".
  • Oscar
It's pretty cool that even before the deal went down, Lasseter already had some people from Marvel over at Pixar to talk about collaborating.
  • If that's the case why didn't we hear of the possibility of this deal earlier?

Marvel's interactions and deals with various studios keeps a healthy diversity of ideas and projects for their characters.

If the eventual control of Marvel's intellectual property by Disney is anywhere similar to its results with the Muppets and Jim Henson's properties, well, then we are in trouble.

They haven't done much for Winnie the Pooh and Tigger either.

That being said, Bob Iger is a smart guy. Hopefully, it will turn out all right.

    Love the image.

thanks for the video blog the only thing i am interested is if pixar is interested in making the ant man or any other character. If any day pixar chooses a character to make a movie out of it i would be interested in seeing that movie .As far as deal is concerned disney has made the right choice but it would be interesting to see what will they announce and what ideas they have in store for.
