Cool Stuff: Rick Baker’s Real Life Popeye

zz11bb518cw

What would Popeye look like if he were a real life human? Probably nothing like Robin Williams… Six time Academy Award-winning special effects makeup artist Rick Baker (An American Werewolf in London, Men in Black) apparently decided to sculpt a real-life version of the famous cartoon sailor man. However, I am unable to find the original source for the photo. I would love to see a horror movie trailer of Popeye using this design, kinda like how FunnyOrDie did with Gobstopper. • Holy god that is crazy. That is one character I would have never thought of looking that way. That would be a pretty intense horror movie for sure.
  • Rick Baker is God. This is incredible.
  • No sane, reasonable woman would touch a guy like that. Gross!!!!!!!
  • You're familiar with Olive Oyl, right? Sane and reasonable don't even remotely describe her.
  • RosanatorDA
i imagined popeye being a little younger looker (less wrinkles)
  • Name
Anyone else think he looks a bit Ferengi?
  • cAP lOCK oN
That old cracked face could use some Olive Oil.
  • Skip Entro
I believe that "sculpt" is actually a computer image Rick created with Z-brush.
  • Steen
Z-Brush or Mudbox definitely. Fake depth of field is a give away.
  • goldfarb
it's z-brush...and what gives it away is the brushed on texture
I think there are other example on his site...
  • Rockie
more proof that baker is the man

    absolutely stunning
  • drytoad1
Wow! Send that dude over to Iraq.... He'll get th' job done!
  • Lally
I bet the spinach transformation is sight to behold.
  • donivan
This actually looks like his father without the wiskers,Poop Deck Pappy.
They should create a series of twisted characters(Todd McFarlane, are you reading this) with the whole "cast".Sweet Pea as a psycho baby confined in a crib/cage,Poop Deck Pappy,Olive Oyl as a slim yet curvaceous siren(twist),Bluto/Brutus,Popeye's three nephews(who were they parents),Wimpy(really, really huge),the Jeep(not the vehicle-that spotted dog/cat thing that could become invisible-jeep,jeep)and The Sea Hag.
  • Roberto
Could use some green staining on the lips. Maybe running down the chin a bit.
  • Not how I imagine him at all, hi shouldn't be that old, I like the image but thats not popeye to me,
  • This looks more like a Todd McFarlane creation.
  • snootles
cool twist on the character. I could imagine this being Popeye BEFORE the spinach, once eaten, he gets younger, stronger, tougher and ready to kick ass! well done
  • existenz
Old Popeye maybe, I've always pictured him as in his 40s. Are there any pics of what his massive forearms would look like?
  • capawesome
Rick Baker is the fucking man
  • lux
C'mon.. popeye isn't that old... fail
  • tielardurdin
i would watch this feature length

I shudder to think how a real life Olive Oyl would look like.
  • man, i wanted to see his giant fore arms
  • JPX
Okay, that is interesting, but why is Popeye so old? Cartoon Popeye wasn't an old dude, just deformed.

"I would love to see a horror movie trailer of Popeye using this design, kinda like how FunnyOrDie did with Gobstopper."

Or as Mark Jones ACTUALLY did with Rumpelstiltskin?
