Bad Boys 3 In Development

Bad Boys

Remember the scene in Michael Bay’s Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen where Sam is drawing symbols all over the walls of his dorm room? Yeah, we’ve tried to forget about it too. What you might not have noticed is that Sam writes the number 3 on a poster for the other Michael Bay sequel, Bad Boys II. Now we’ve learned that the studio is moving forward with development on a third film, but will the original crew return for one more adventure?

THR reports that Columbia Pictures has hired Peter Craig to write a screenplay for Bad Boys 3. But the project is only in the early stages and none of the participants have yet agreed to return.

The hope is to get both Martin Lawrence and Will Smith to return, alongside director Michael Bay and producer Jerry Bruckheimer. Bruckheimer said in an interview that “When we had about two weeks of shooting left to go on Bad Boys II, Will and Martin were having such a good time, they phoned (Columbia studio boss) Amy Pascal and said, ‘We want to sign up for another one.’ So hopefully we’ll get them all back together again.”

At the 2008 MTV Movie Awards, Will Smith told Hollyscoop that he had an idea for Bad Boys 3, but added that “Michael (Bay) is too expensive now. He’s way too expensive.” And that is the big hurdle — getting the cash to bring back Will Smith, who has since exploded into a megastar, Bruckheimer, who never comes cheap, and Bay, who is now use to collecting percentages of toy merchandise Lucas-style.

All of the usual suspects have expressed an interest in coming back for a third movie, but only if they can get the story right. That’s where Craig comes in. For those of you who don’t recognize his name, you probably shouldn’t, as he has no completed screenwriting credits on his Hollywood resume.

According to Wikipedia, he’s a published author known for his “darkly comic novels of imploding father-child relationships.” His novels include The Martini Shot, Hot Plastic, and Blood Father. As for Hollywood, he has been developing a few projects, mainly co-writing Ben Affleck’s The Town which begins shooting next month, and has been working on a live-action adaptation of the popular anime Cowboy Bebop for 20th Century Fox and Keanu Reeves. Oh, and he’s also the son of actress Sally Field.

Many of you know that I’m often a defender of Michael Bay. That said, I didn’t speak up after the release of Transformers:Revenge of the Fallen for obvious reasons. And before that, my least favorite films he’s made are the Bad Boys series. That’s not to say they’re bad, I just don’t like Martin Lawrence. The first Bad Boys film is interesting to watch just because you can tell Bay is on a leash, restrained by producers and budget, on his first feature film. His next two films, The Rock and Armageddon, are probably his most coherent, probably because it was a time when he still had structure.

Back to the Bad Boys films, I will say this — the car chase sequence in Bad Boys 2 is very under-appreciated, and is probably (wait for it.. hyperbolic statement coming up… in 3…2…1..) one of the best car chase action sequences of the last decade (seen below).

And hey, best case scenario, as GetStuck suggests, this and the Point Break sequel might lead to a Hot Fuzz 2… Just a thought.

Perhaps this is for the best. I'd rather have Michael Bay fuck up his own franchises rather than destroying more of my childhood memories...
  • max
lol that whol car scene chase made no sense the truck was keeping up with an SUV and a Ferarri couldnt keep up with an 18 wheeler... i know they were busy dodging cars and all but still in the 4 minutes that the chase lasts they should have easly got in front of the truck

    Ughhh... whyyy?
  • michelle1972
    Why not?
  • tenno
    I...*sigh*...I just fucking give up...
  • Eric
yep that kinda makes me wanna vomit... I wish they'd have left it off with one.
  • Maracle2
im guessing from the popularity of Transformers 2 Martin Lawrence's role will be replaced my Optimus Prime
  • freemachine
Wild Hogs, Wild Hogs 2, College Road Trip? Martin Lawrence would probably blow Michael Bay at this point just to get BB3 off the ground.

"(wait for it.. hyperbolic statement coming up… in 3…2…1..) one of the best car chase action sequences of the last decade."

And a bloody RIPOFF of Jackie Chan's Police Story.

    Spare me.
  • I haven't seen the movie in a long while, but from what I remember, I'm talking about the other chase scene, not the one going down the hill (which yes, appears to be ripped off or inspired by the Police Story sequence).

Hey, Bay does what he does better than anyone in the industry - switches peoples' brains off at the concession stand and lets explosions fill the screen for 2 hours. This kind of movie's been with us since the 80's and it ain't going away.

And....you KNOW you'll end up seeing this one way or the other - at the cinema, on DVD or otherwise. You can either weep for the future or just go with it - it makes films like Moon and Inglorious Basterds taste all the sweeter after the salt of bitter Bay-tears.
  • tenno
So you're saying Michael Bay elicits Stockholm Syndrome in movie goers?
  • DeadlyPorpoise
That's a good way of putting it! Alternatively, it's like probing a rotten tooth with your tongue - you KNOW it's going to hurt, but youo keep right on poking to see just HOW much it'll hurt....
  • only michael bay series i enjoy, just mindless fun

The car chase scene was one of the sickest action sequences in cinema history, doing a 3rd BAD BOYS will be the best move for Bay he shouldnt even dare think he's too big to skip it ! Shit on the 2nd thought Bay skip it Will i aint done a feature yet but im the guy to replace Michael Bay as the helmer of BB 3 ! Bruckheimer, cut the fuckin check ! Letz do this ....Letz go !
  • Bad Boys 3: The Search for More Money
  • I don't know how much more real the shit can get.
  • tenno
SO REAL its going to be a non-stop revolving shot for the whole movie
  • RosanatorDA
    finally.
  • shameless
for the love of god, no no no no no no no no no no no no please dont let this happen...
  • If Bay is working on that I Am Number 4 or whatever its called, and then moving onto Transformers 3, he couldn't possibly go into production on this until 2012. Maybe Smith will be free by then, BUT, maybe his Hancock franchise will be taking up all his blockbuster time.

Coincidentally, Roland Emmerich predicted the world would end in 2012. We should have assumed it would be at the hands of Bay.
  • I don't think this is a bad idea. Bad Boys 2 was good enough and I would think most people would watch another.

I personally love the movies! You just cant take them seriously. They are awesome! Ill be waiting for this one.

You'd have to be blind to not notice the Bad Boys II poster in Transformers, it got a close-up.
  • Why can't Michael Bay direct in-car sequences? Going all the way back to the first Bad Boys film, all of his in-car shots clearly look like a car is being shaken on a sound stage with the windows completely blown out to hide that fact. A little shaky cam and voila, a cheap as hell looking shot.

With regards to this particular car chase sequence, he ripped himself off in a similar chase in The Island (not to say the chase itself isn't technically well done with the exception the in-car shots). Best one in the last decade though? I'd pick the Matrix Reloaded sequence over this any day.

To pilfer another film site talk back lexicon: Martin Lawrence gotta eat!
  • I really liked Bad Boys 1 and 2 when I saw them when I was younger and I'm still excited for another one even if it won't be great.

Just for nostalgia's sake I guess lol. (Still love that car chase)
  • I actually want this to happen. I love the Bad Boys series. Will Smith and Martin Lawrence are great in them and Bay's blow things up first, ask questions later attitude is perfect in them. I know he's not a good filmmaker but you can't help but enjoy the Bad Boys series. They're awesome.
  • mike
yes finally...thank god BB2 was one of my favorites!!!
  • I'd love to see another Bad Boys flick. Mindless action comedy fun that does no harm. And let's keep in mind that Tarantino gave us a pretty f*cking awesome car chase in Death Proof, too. The film was far from stellar, but that car chase was amazing.

One of the best action movies of the last decade.

I think the films are fun.
So Im glad to hear this. :)
  • No. NO! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

I think "The Island" was actually Michael Bay's best movie. Too bad it was also his least successful.

Maybe if it had Megan Fox instead of Scarlett Johannsen...?
  • FunkyMunkey
I loved Bad Boys, but hated Bad Boys 2. The car chase with the dead bodies... the thing with Will Smith being the convict uncle. What the fuck?

It was all just a bit too fucked up for me
  • Guest
Bad Boys 1 and 2 was good and im hoping for Bad Boys 3 to happen but it needs to have a good story Bad Boys 2 story was all over the place.
  • joker93
I'm not against the idea, bring the movie on. Liked BB and BB2 enough, and it's time for Bay to prove he still can shoot some great action that doesn't involve giant CGI robots.

BTW... I consider the Matrix Reloaded chase to be the best in the last decade, but the one in BB2 comes close.
  • Tiffany
Yes! I think the matrix chase scene was the absolute best! I have yet to see another chase scene to stack up to that one.
  • The_Kid
Martin lawrence needs this, bay needs this. ROTF was big on action, crap on story. I love the Bad Boys movies, I'd totally go see this.
  • A. J.
I liked these movies. Glad to hear a 3rd may be on it's way.
  • Kyle C.
Michael Bay's best film is The Rock by far, then I'd say Bad Boys, The Island, Transformers 1, and Bad Boys 2. I'd love to see Bay do another original R-rated film like The Rock but Bad Boys 3 is better than a Transformers 3, Revenge of the Fallen was even worse than Armageddon and Pearl Harbor.
  • Jack
i thought Bay wanted to do something "smaller" after Transformers 2. the script was something to do with bodybuilders i think.
  • GG
The reason for the Bad Boys II poster is more because Megan Fox was an extra in that movie and it was probably a little shout out to that fact.

However, if they do BB3, I'm there.
  • The Bad Boys movies are guilty pleasures for everyone. There's no real reason to not like them other than that the story can maybe get a little flat. The humor and chemistry between the leads paired with the action prowess of Michael Bay makes for amazing summer cinema. A 3rd will be great with the cast returning and a story with just enough meat to keep me interested.
  • CyT
I love the Bad Boys films. Talk about fun action packed, tongue in cheek silly comedy done perfectly. If Bruckheimer, Smith, Lawrence and Bay come back on board I am totally in.

BTW .. I am in total agreement with you Peter it kills Ronin's supposed best car chase ever!
  • Hot Fuzz 2 would be a better choice.
  • spanky
martin lawrence and will smith need to make a bad boys 3 fuck everyone else who stand sin the way
  • michelle1972
You don't like Martin Lawrence? What's not to like? He's funny as hell! I would really be curious as to why you don't like him
  • Tom
Bad Boys is AWESOME! All you haters know what you can do.

    Bad Boys 3 for Life!
  • katrina
unfortunately Martin Lawrence has starred in a lot of 'dumb movies' Black Knight, Rebound, What's the Worst Thng Tht Cld Happen, Welcome Home Roscoe Jenkins, and recently College Roadtrip...just to name a few. But to say you just don't like Martin; ( who never needs to be accompanied with his lastname in my house) is quite drastic. He's a real comedian. He's talented and quite underrated in my opinion. Bad Boys, Bad Boys 2 Classic Buddy Cop Flicks, and hopefully 3 will also be great. I say don't give up on Martin. revisit his old stand-ups and of course the Martin show. Funny is what Funny does. Will Smith is an awesome actor but with lets be real, I Am Legend was tremendous while Hancock and Seven Pounds well sucked. While Michael Bay's Transformers 2 lacked what the Transformers delivered I think with a good script BB3 will be phenomenal.
