Rob Zombie to Remake The Blob

The Blob

Just when I was hoping that Rob Zombie would step away from remakes/sequels, and return to direct an original project, we’ve learned that the rock musician turned filmmaker has signed on to write, direct, and produce a remake of the 1958 horror classic The Blob.

Variety reports that funding is in place to make an R-rated $30 million film, and Zombie will complete the script while he’s on tour with his new album this fall. Producers are confident that a distribution deal will be made before the production begins in Spring 2010.

The original film tells the story of people of a small town who refuse to listen to a group of teenagers who witnessed a mysterious creature from another planet land on earth. The ever-growing giant blob of jelly absorbs the humans it contacts and destroys the town.

My immediate reaction is that the story won’t work for audiences today unless you made it a period horror-comedy, something like Mars Attacks or Slither. But that is not in the plans. Zombie says he intends “to make it scary,” and touts the “freedom” he has been given “to take it in any crazy direction.” Zombie was a fan of the original, but has much different plans for the reinvention.  So don’t expect a “big red blobby thing” as Zombie says “That gigantic Jello-looking thing might have been scary to audiences in the 1950s, but people would laugh now.” The list of producers includes original Blob producer Jack H. Harris.

I’m a fan of Zombie’s first two films, but pretty much hated his Halloween remake. The sequel, which hits theaters this weekend, doesn’t look any better. I think I’d much rather see him develop an original film than make another remake/sequel.

I mean this in the nicest way possible: Rob Zombie needs to fuck off.
  • SlashCynic
I'm convinced Rob Zombie can't come up with an original horror movie to save his life. All he does is re-makes. House of 1000 Corpses and Devil Rejects were no more than re-makes/rip-offs of Texas Chainsaw Massacre 1 & 2, Halloween etc..
  • greggorybasore
Calling House of 1000 Corpses a remake/rip-off of Texas Chainsaw is fair, but I really don't see any similarities between Devil's Rejects and Texas Chainsaw 2
  • SlashCynic
What do you mean? Devil's Reject is pretty much scene by scene.
  • greggorybasore
Scene for scene? What are you talking about? Chainsaw 2 picks up a years later with the killers targeting a DJ at a local radio station, kidnapping her, and taking her to a secret lair underground where she eventually fights back and kills her assailants.
Rejects picks up shortly after the first movie (a few weeks or maybe a few days later) with the family getting raided by the fuzz and mostly slaughtered. 3 survivors escape, one gets taken into custody and the rest of the movie is split between showing the surviving killers on the run and the investigation of one cop trying to bring them down.
Those two plots seem vastly different rather than being the same scene for scene.

HONESTLY... if you think Zombie is going to "remake" The Blob in the same way he "remade" Halloween (which was really just a modern take with a few sprinkles of Zombie's particular film flavor) you are... wrong! Sure, there will be a Blob in the film... but you think he's going to actually follow the original's lackluster plot? The film isn't cool enough to remake anything besides JUST the titular creature... THE BLOB!
  • riondekker
Rob Zombie's THERE WILL BE BLOB
  • bite me
are you fucking kidding? house of 1000 corpses and devils rejects were original, they were nothing like texas chainsaw massacre. he came up with a whole deranged family based off old marx brothers skits and made them into characters, how is that not clever? you people just dont appreciate horror. your probably too busy watching romantic comedies and shopping at the mall

Someone needs to sit down with this man, look him in the eye and say " Stop it. Just, stop it."
  • I am only ok with this if we get Kevin Dillion's hair from the 1988's remake to do a cameo
  • yukface27
... and his hair has to perform a stunt on a motorcycle.
  • thatguyrom
Mr. Zombie, please stop trying to remake beloved horror classics into some sort of wanna-be "edgy" piece of crap.
  • miranda
thatguyrom you have no idea who you are talking about because Rob Zombie is the GOD of horror
  • freemachine
Steve McQueen made the first movie. They tried a remake in 1988 and it failed because it lacked McQueen's coolness. Zombie is an idiot if he thinks he can pull this off. Mark my words, the only Blob you'll see is a big steaming one.
  • I remember the 1988 remake! It was terrible.
  • plagueoftruth
I thought the 1988 version was quite good. It was the same Frank Darabont/Chuck Russell collaboration that made 'Nightmare on Elm Street 3: The Dream Warriors.'
I'll take that 1988 version over much of the drivel we call horror these days.
  • tyler
its interesting that the 1988 kevin dillon remake isn't mentioned at all in the article, which is really the movie that zombie would be competing with. that's like saying 'rob zombie's remaking the 1951 version of 'the thing'.'

it does make sense that they would remake/do an updated version of the blob movie though, since the 1988 version has such a good reputation, they would hope to get some of that movies fanbase. but having zombie do it? big opening at the boxoffice (possibly), then huge dropoff as people realize it sucks. zombie has got some visual flair, but storywise, his brain is dumb.
  • existenz
The 1988 Blob movie was actually fairly gory and violent in parts. It scared me when I was a kid, though I don't think the dialogue or special effects have held up real well since then.

I think Rob Zombie is looking forwards to many scenes of people's skin dissolving as the Blob covers them. We'll see if he comes up with a decent story. Based on his previous work I doubt it.

Right now, the word BLOB reminds me only of crappy Wolverine. "Did you just call me blob?". Man that movie was awful.. Hope this remake is good.
  • Not quite 'I'm the Juggernaught, bitch', but still intolerable.
  • [A]
Oh man -- internet meme going to film. I don't know what's next -- some action trilogy called PWNER, maybe..?!
  • In the remake, The Blob's mom will be a white trash stripper, who is living with a drunk redneck that beats on the Blob. So the Blob goes crazy and starts to kill anyone insight.

    What? That's Original.

As bad as the 1988 remake was and still is.. I love watching Johnny Drama & Amanda (That Chick from Saw) Young camp it up with the Jello Monster. An actual "Scary" version of this doesn't sound that interesting to me personally.
  • flintlocke
This is particularly amusing since before Halloween, he proudly proclaimed his contempt for remakes. I guess paychecks make a big difference in principles.

The problem with Zombie's work is that while he's technically competent, he's a tragically awful storyteller in every respect -- with words, pacing and tone. And though he obviously loves horror and exploitation, he doesn't seem to really understand why -- or at least is unable to properly articulate it, so he just emulates the style on a superficial level.

I also don't think he comprehends what is scary -- making audiences uncomfortable is not the same thing as scaring them.
  • I actually think this could turn out amazing; but i also agree with Peter that Zombie need to focus on original horror and genre films that get remade years later, not vice versa.

The Blob has plenty of room (pseudo-pun intended) to be absolutely insane---just picture the blob segment in Creepshow 2 via Zombie vision. I've always found the concept terrifying, but executed in feature films in a very silly way a la Sasquatch (another Zombie project). Zombie taking on a B-movie '50s concept = I'm there.
  • thelastknowngod
i dont care what anyone else says, i cant wait for this. Zombie's Halloween remake was awesome. perhaps its because i disliked the original so much... whatev.

i would definitely prefer an original film from him but it seems like thats almost what he is going to do with this property, take a very basic premise and create his own world around it. kinda like the upcoming Asteroids adaptation.
  • MHGJ
so you prefer random nudity and gore in a completely scareless movie to one of the tensest scariest movies of all time?
  • thelastknowngod
id call the original Halloween overrated before i call it tense.
  • [A]
The original is KUBRICK-excellent next to the remake. And I like Rob Zombie.. as a musician.
  • Fir3Wolf
I'm a fan of the original movie and would probably see this remake if it were being directed by someone other then Rob Zombie. Not a big fan of the guy as far as his movies go, and so far he hasn't done so great with remakes.
  • What happens when there is no other movies to remake? Remake movies that have already been remade!
  • also, i would compare the blob as being in a similar vein to frankenstein and the mummy et al - it's an icon of old school horror, so i'm not sure this movie really constitutes "remake." zombie will make it his own, and unlike michael myers, there's less loyalty to former incarnations. look forward to hearing his take on it.
  • [A]
So.. Rob Zombie is better off trying to remake (really) old movies, with no fanbase at all..?
  • stuntmanbob
posted this in the wrong article. I know i'm a dumbass... :(

I'm not sure how much this will actually carry and I'm sure I will get met with some hate but what's the point in leaving a comment then. At first let me say I have not seen the original "Blob" movie. Second of all I am an aspiring filmmaker from Chicago and personally I have a great respect for Rob Zombie and his remake of Halloween.

Of course it will never compare to Carpenter's and that's what I was expecting or anybody should for that matter. But the way it was shot, the framing, the script ( not great, but doable) was what I gathering that was good from Halloween. Zombie most definitely impressed me.

Also as a director he is a good editor. Does anyone remember the alternate escape scene? I was very happy that it was cut from the theatrical release. I think there is a great aesthetic to his movies and although it probably will not be amazing I am looking forward to seeing Halloween II
  • probot
Wait, what happened to Tyrannosaurus Rex? I like Rob Zombie though I loathed House of 1000 corpses but loved The Devil's Rejects and thought Halloween was fun but of coarse doesn't even compare to the original. The Blob though? I think RZ would be better suited for the NOES remake or perhaps another Texas Chainsaw Massacre only to get the whole remaking thing out of his system and do something original again.
  • Weyland_Yutani
Zombie lost whatever he almost had. Disappointing on numerous levels.
  • [A]
He's still got a hot wife.
  • Craigasorusrex
Yes, have the guy who "re imagined" the Halloween series remake the "Blob" . Those movies after all have been such a succe....

Oh yeah I forget they sucked, big time.
  • Anthony_Galindo
I did like his second movie but I do have to say that House of a Thousand Corpses was probably the worst movie I ever had the misfortune of buying a ticket for. I really wanted my money back.
  • SwordofConan
I was looking forward to Tyrannosaurus Rex being his next film, but I think we have to look at this whole thing from Rob's perspective.

I remember reading that the studios really screwed around with the release of El Superbeasto and he even said that looking back he can't believe that Devil's Rejects even got funding. If H2 and this blob remake are both hits then he will probably have free reign to make whatever movie he wants.

As far as remakes go I think that there are some things that actually can be remade and be done well. What if everyone had told Carpenter that he shouldn't remake "The Thing?"
  • nic1
I like Zombie's films, but this doesn't sound great. T-Rex next please and leave The Blob alone.
  • JPX
I think this is great news. The original is severely overrated. The story is glacially paced until the last reel; the dialogue and acting are mediocre; the special effects laughable (as in, I laughed whenever I saw the strawberry-jam looking blob, no matter how big it got). I say, "Bring it on, Rob!"
  • Are audiences ready to give a sh*t about The Blob? It's the polar opposite of the type of horror that is finding (limited) success these days. Hopefully it bombs hard and Rob Zombie is cast to the outer boundaries of filmmaker, never to return. Doesn't he have some songs to write and some albums to sell?
  • I think it'd be awesome if zombie committed to doing a sequel of the 1988 one. Have the preacher still preaching his psycho sermon and then have him unleash it upon a city. People need to calm down. I really like the 1998 blob, good monster movie withs oem great special effects and good gore. teh original can remain by itself.
  • izzi
the new blob is actually trailer park trash. - literally.
  • hahaha... this movie is going to suck so bad. The Blob worked for the 50s in a period when Americans was going through a Red Scare phase... it just won't work today.
  • No Rob! Not again. What about T REX?
  • medeasleeps
Rob seems to really relate to his Tales of Horror from White Trash Freaks.
I can't imagine how bad he will screw up the Blob, and I honestly don't want to watch it.
If I do, I will just have one more thing to bitch about in this world.
I gave Halloween a chance, even though I hated all his other movies, and I really regret
that I ever watched it. Bad..... so Bad....
  • entertainmenttod
The original is a B movie classic and the 1988 remake very good. Why do people think Zombie is a talent? I HATE the fact they gave him this job

    chuck
  • Kyle C.
So we can expect a badly acted, hillbilly version of The Blob. Great, just waht I freakin' wanted!!!! Seriously, WTF Mr. Zombie? Go back to making music or something. Devil's Rejects was your only decent movie.
  • I don't care for Rob Zombies take on movies, and i have very low expectations for his version of the bloob but new more horror version of the bloob is an interesting idea.
