Fan Art: Ryan Reynolds as The Green Lantern

Update: Not long ago a source mentioned that Green Lantern might be doing some scouting in Louisiana, and I completely spaced it this morning. Same source wrote in just now to say that in fact, the production will shoot in the States next year, likely in or around New Orleans. Does that mean all the work is going to happen here? Not necessarily, but it is a sign that WB at least has a contingency plan. Original article follows.

First up, don’t take anything that follows as a suggestion that Martin Campbell’s Green Lantern isn’t going to happen. It simply may not happen where it was originally scheduled to. Australian site Inside Film reports that “Green Lantern’s proposed Australian shoot is understood to be under threat after the rising Australian dollar has blown out production costs.” What does that mean? Basically, that if Warner Bros. and the Australian government can’t come to some sort of tax break deal, you’ll see Canadian or Eastern European backdrops in the film instead of Australian.

Essentially, the problem is that the value of the Australian dollar has risen quite a bit since this spring. It’s 16% higher now; great for Australians, but not so attractive for US studios that decided to shoot there to take advantage of affordable production. Hey, you think that industry (like film production) flocking to the country has helped their dollar? Probably not by 16%, but every bit helps.

Inside Film says “Warner Bros is understood to be negotiating with the NSW State Government to receive a higher level of concessions in an effort to claw back between $US15 and $US25 million in value eroded by the currency gains.” The complication is that Warner Bros. wasn’t able to lock in their financing months ago when the picture decided to shoot down under. Now they might be left hanging while the new Narnia film and Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark are able to shoot with financing packages locked in months ago when the dollar was weaker.

So where do you want to see Green Lantern based, if it can’t be the glorious vistas of Australia? If every other damn picture didn’t seem to be shooting in New Mexico these days I’d say the American Southwest is the ideal location. And probably still is; there’d be real verisimilitude for Hal Jordan’s test pilot character if the film actually shot in areas where that sort of thing took place. What a concept.

As long as the film happens I'll be happy.
Chances are, the Australian Dollar will decrease in value (not 16% though) after losing major studio funds over the course of a few years.
  • Chances are, Travis here has no idea how the financial dollar works.
  • that1
Actually if Australia sees a decrease in FDI because of the high Aus dollar, it might go down.
  • papasanchez
Who gives a shit where it's made, as long as it's made!!
  • existenz
Hard to believe that the Australian govt would consider forking over $15-$25 million to a movie studio just for a few hundred jobs, but I guess that's the world we live in now. Wild.

Maybe they should shoot in in South Africa. We all saw what Neil Blomkampp did for only $30 million there!
  • I have an idea, how about they shoot it in fucking LOS ANGELES! All the studios are here, the crews are here, the post facitilities... and nobody is working because as of the last two years NOTHING freaking shoots here anymore!
  • Frederik
    Too expensive.
  • Octoberist
Let's say the budget was at 150 million if it was shot in Aussie prior to the dollar hike. If Green Lantern were to shoot in LA, that 150 would become 200, and without the tax breaks, etc.

as you can, that difference isn't that huge, but Warners would have gotten a tax break in aus, so in the end, they save even more money.

Australia and NZ have world-class facilities - and its cheaper to make films down there. Plus, they get tax breaks.

Don't believe me - ask James Cameron.

I'm glad that Russ straighten things out a bit.

I swear, other websites are blowing this out of proportion, as if Green Lantern has been canceled or something.

I gotta say, I hate the set-based on non-NYC settings of Singer's Supes movie.

I mean, don't get me wrong: there was plenty to dislike about that picture.

But the look and feel of it was terrible, esp. compared to Raimi's Spider-Man or the first Superman movie. (Or Batman Begins.)
  • Octoberist
When you watch movies like Spider-Man, Batman Begins and Dark Knight, they all seem big while Superman Returns feels so small.
  • kirklaz
I completely agree. I don't think the movie is inherently bad in itself compared to the previous iterations. But when you hold it up against the Spider Man films or Nolan's Batman films, Superman Returns feels somewhat...comical
  • Brian
Very true. Quick, rushed story with a minor plot. Lex Luthor is building some sort of continent that will bump into the east coast. Meh. Give me some cosmic shit, real villains, and a ballsy Lois.
  • mangoshakes
ah, the look of Superman returns was my favorite thing. kinda had this soft look to it. loved it.
  • mangoshakes
I guess new orleans could be coast city. this makes it easier to get set photos!!! (i assume).
  • starscream9289
Why don't they just use CGI?

    CGI solves everything!
  • Well, that makes two movies set in New Orleans nowadays...
  • Octoberist
How's the skyline of New Orleans?
  • tenno
Kind of dinky and anonymous but with a superdome, expect lots of CGI
  • Guest
i always said Green Lantern should of been shot in America
  • If true, I will definitely be taking a weekend trip. This is so close :) It's a neat looking city, but I'm not really sure what kind of feel they would be going for in a superhero movie with NOLA's atmosphere...
  • mangoshakes
where in aussie were they filming anyway? what city i mean. humm.
  • Bluey
Is that picture of Ryan Reynolds real????
  • The only thing Im wondering is who made that photo... if its a concept WOW it looks official
  • te22a
If they decide to shoot in Australia - it would most likely be shot in either Sydney, Melbourne or Brisbane.

It makes sense for them to shoot down there. Its cheaper - they get tax breaks and they have world-class crews and post facilities.

US shoots are too expensive these days. And no - the Aussie dollar is not gonna weaken over a super hero movie. In fact, its the greenback that we should be worried about. It's getting worse each day.

  • Octoberist
That's why I think New Orleans (and the US in general) needs the work more than Sydney.
  • paul001
We never get any films down here in Australia and it is impossible to get a job in the industry. If we lose this I will be devistated.
  • gigaherc
    It's not official, it's fanart.

Been posted here in cool stuff section a while ago.

Nice work, you can tell he looks good in the suit.
