A whole ton of new photos have showed up on the web today, thanks in part to the upcoming Toronto International Film Festival. But before I get to those, perhaps the most notable stills are scanned from Empire’s Avatar cover story. They show, among other things, Sigourney Weaver’s avatar. We saw her in the Comic Con and Avatar Day footage, but if you missed those exhibitions, this is your first chance to see a blue alien that looks a whole lot like Dana Barrett. See more of Empire’s Avatar images after the break, along with stuff from Valhalla Rising, Jennifer’s Body, and Whiteout.

My favorite batch of images today come from Nicolas Winding Refn’s Valhalla Rising, which casts Mads Mikklesen as what appears to be some form of Odin. My appreciation for Refn doesn’t need to be restated, but I’d probably be interested in this movie even if he wasn’t directing. Here’s the trimmed synopsis from the TIFF website. (Beware of reading too much of the TIFF write-up, as the fest’s programmers have a history of putting ideas in your head about the film.)

Valhalla Rising begins on a desolate coast where the heads of warring clans meet in battle. For years, the most fearsome and successful fighter has been an enigmatic figure known only as One Eye (Mikkelsen). Silent and lethal, One Eye has defeated everyone he’s encountered, but he’s treated more like an animal than a warrior. The only person he has any relationship with is the young boy who brings him food and water daily. Constantly caged and shackled, One Eye has drawn the attention of a new force now sweeping the countryside and displacing the society’s leaders: Christians. Determined to claim territory for his faith, the leader of a band of Christians sets sail on an ill-fated odyssey to the Holy Land with One Eye and the young boy in tow.

Valhalla Rising hasn’t yet been picked up for US distribution, but is playing both Toronto and Venice, and I’d expect to get distro word out of one of those festivals. Then we’ve got new images from Jennifer’s Body and the Kate Beckinsale graphic novel adaptation Whiteout. Since those films are a bit better known than Valhalla Rising I’ll let the images speak for themselves. Besides, those images look just like all the others released from each movie. (The Whiteout images are exclusive to Empire (via: MarketSaw), so head there to check them out in full.)

You know what? No matter how great the 3D and CGI is, the Na'vis aren't going to look real because we know they don't exist. I think our minds are already telling us 'Hey that's not real' even before we appreciate the new tech and all. What will change our minds if when we see more footage of the Na'vis interacting with live action humans - that's when one starts to relate to these fictional creatures. When we see a bunch of blue elvish aliens hopping around, we're not going to accept it as real because it lacks a human context.

Don't the alien's look like cat people in King's 1992 Sleepwalkers???
  • clarencesomerset
    You're right!
  • Gelman
I dunno. I think in pictures, you have a point. But when they start speaking, and when the resolution is 50 times what it is in a scanned image of a magazine, you might be singing a different tune.
  • clarencesomerset
Possibly. I think when the Na'vis start fighting with the human troops instead of just interacting with other CGI creatures, the realism will increase since the presence of humans will suddenly make the Na'vis believable. That said, Cameron has always been a cracking storyteller and we're sorely lacking that in an age when action directors have the same technical mastery (Bay, Sommers) but not the ability to tell a story.
  • And also because less and less people are not willing to suspend their disbelief.

Ugh, god...the designs. I try so hard to enjoy them!

Valhalla Rising should be fun as hell. i've loved everything he's done so far.

as for avatar, yes i'm still there
  • Gelman
Wait. The guy with the bleeding eye in Casino Royale has ANOTHER bleeding eye in Valhalla? Is he using a real-life ailment as a prop in all his films?

Sigourney Weaver's Avatar looks an awful lot like Bridget Fonda.

Each image makes Avatar just look like a rehash of Dances With Wolves but in the future.

And if they went so far as to create these really unique aliens with performance capture why continue to give them human features like eyes, nose, mouth, hands and feet. Seems like there was an opportunity to create something very unique, not a tall, blue native-America Sigourney Weaver.
  • Mza
The Na'vi still needed to look 'bangable' apparently.

Fair enough point though - how much could we immerse ourselves in the story if the Na'vi looked more alien than human?
  • starscream9289
I WANT to be excited, but I just don't see what the big deal is.
  • Octoberist
I think what Cameron was trying to with the alien design, was to create simplistic and exotic beings. However, I just don't find them that appealing. i'm all for 'less is more' when it comes to certain designs, but the na'vi are border lining generic. Of course, I could be eating crow by the time the movie comes out, so I don't wanna be too harsh on Avatar!

Movie stills of CGI characters always look fake or unconvincing in magazines.

I remember how fake the stills from KING KONG looked. But then when I watched the movie on the big screen, I completely forgot that I was looking at a giant CGI ape and just went along for the ride.

The same can be said about Gollum, and the Transformers. They look better in high-res, in motion, on the big screen.

I expect the same with AVATAR. Though the stills shown here are good, I'm not that impressed by them. They look cartoony and rubbery, they look like drawings at best.
  • Every time I hear anything about Jennifer's Body I get Hole's song stuck in my head for the rest of the day. Oh, plus that natural blood rush from thoughts of Megan Fox.
  • Phillip
I see you've just stolen your Valhalla Rising images from The Playlist...

    James Cameron's CATS )))
    Sigourney Weaver is Pussy Galore
  • Blue Na'vi Banger
I think the designs look amazing. I find it funny how the main criticism this film is getting is for the characters being blue, and oh crap, cat-like. As if blue was off limits for aliens. What color would have met the fanboys' approval? Are they all SETI experts on what extraterrestrial reallly look like? Would Green Squidbillies have been kewwwler and more accurate? I just don't get it. This isn't hard sci-fi literature. It's sci-fi/fantasy escapist entertainment.
