Inception Movie Teaser Trailer

inception_teaser_2

The teaser trailer for Christopher Nolan’s upcoming Inception was released in some theaters with Inglourious Basterds last Friday, and the one-minute clip is now online thanks to Yahoo. Your mind is the scene of the crime, after the jump.

We’ve been talking about the film based on the logline “a contemporary sci-fi actioner set within the architecture of the mind” for quite a while, and we have the rumored plot that says “Inception is about entering peoples’ minds/dreams. A technology to do so has been developed and is done through an injection. DiCaprio and his team work to enter the minds of other characters in order to retrieve/plant information.” Those things could well hold true, and the ‘your mind is the scene of the crime’ tagline suggests that more planting info will be done than retrieving. After seeing this teaser I expect The Matrix will be brought up fairly frequently. Here we see a brief fight scene in what appears to be a hotel corridor, with the participants bouncing all over the walls and ceiling. And in general, a lack of solid grounding and perspective is what characterizes the teaser. There’s a reason that spinning top was used for the initial tease on Inception’s website.

Meanwhile, the cinematography seems to be a direct extension of what Wally Pfister did for Nolan on The Dark Knight. I loved Pfister’s work on that film, so I’m curious to see how he pushes it forward here. And while the Hans Zimmer score for the teaser is on the bombastic edge, it is also not the typical bombastic movie teaser music, but more in line with the atonal work Zimmer did for The Dark Knight. What is Nolan going to unleash here now that he’s not bound to a universe owned by DC? We see overhead city shots (as per TDK), the WB logo as a maze of streets, and a similar set of buildings resolving into a maze for the film’s logo. Is Nolan mapping the human mind to a cityscape?

Inception features Leonardo DiCaprio as Jacob, a CEO-type, Marion Cotillard (La Vie en rose, Public Enemies) as his wife, Ellen Page (Juno)  as a young college grad student named Ariadne,  who is also DiCaprio’s sidekick, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt plays Arthur, an associate working for DiCaprio. Ken Watanabe will play the film’s villain, a man named Saito, who is blackmailing Leonardo DiCaprio’s character. Tom Hardy (Bronson) plays Eames, a member of DiCaprio’s team. Cillian Murphy (Batman Begins, Sunshine) plays Fischer and Michael Caine is also involved.

  • The trailer looks trippy. But, man! I can't get over the casting! With Nolan directing to boot! This is going to be great.
  • Saladinho
This was the best trailer I saw before Inglourious Basterds.
  • quintushalls
Was that sketchy Jay Leno trailer aired before Inglourious Basterds?
  • Saladinho
Yeah, it was. I actually didn't think to count that, but it was pretty funny.
  • Brilliant. This got me feeling warm and fuzzy all over. The music/sound was also brilliant. Good on ya, Nolan.
  • Chris nolan is such a perfectionist.
  • clarencesomerset
    Paprika?
  • That was the first thing I thought of when I saw this.
  • clarencesomerset
Not to mention The Cell too.

It would be interesting to see if the Wolfgang Peterson version of Paprika might go ahead now that Nolan is stamping his mark on the Into-The-Mind genre.

I thought it was more like Psychonauts. Especially with the crooked hallway fight, youtube milkman conspiracy and you'll get my point.

I think this will be an AMAZING film!
  • Hi_there
That Milkman bit, the tiny French Revolution part, and the Giant Person terrorizing little fish people made that game utterly amazingly mindblowing awesome.

I have no idea what this trailer is about (I did recognize the city shots as being very similar to TDK's) and I loved the weird anti-gravity fight scene. Interested to see what all this becomes about.

Definitely made me think of a live-action Paprika as well- know it won't be that, but even that idea gives me goosebumps. This movie just ratcheted up on my have-too-see-NOW lost...
  • clarencesomerset
Nolan can create some really jarring and unnerving images (e.g. The Prestige) without resorting to excessive CG or extravagant design.
  • And not to pour salt in an open wound, but watching this trailer gave me the tingly feeling in my special place that I was hoping for when I watched the Avatar teaser.
  • I'm with ya on this. Now Inception is way MORE exciting than Avatar.
  • Really? What excited you about this? Leo, looking out a car window? A tilted glass of water? A sub-Matrix looking hallway fight? That was the lamest teaser ever.
  • quintushalls
I'm going to say the maze thing and the music. Yeah, it didn't show much, but it felt intriguing to me to figure out what the movie is about. The maze thing showed me that this might be a smart movie.
  • Glass
There's more to be excited about than any sh!t you can put out Brad Arnold (aka douche).
  • I'm definitely teased and intrigued.
  • mikepalledorous
if you'll notice, the fight scene in the hallway isn't really like the matrix at all, breaking the laws of physics. instead, it seems to fit in with the spinning top and the glass of water, and they're fighting on walls and ceilings because that's where gravity takes them. note also, that leo's head tilts up right after the fights goes tumbling down, "mind is scene of the crime"...

What's the word I'm looking for? Oh yeah... not a word, a yawning sound. That'll do it.
  • luke_test
Whilst I'm sure the movie will be great, i can't get too excited over about 10 seconds of footage.
  • brian23
    Waaah.

It wasn't that bad, it's a teaser. Beats skinny, lanky, blue characters frolicking through the jungle.
  • Didn't you also hate The Dark Knight?
  • lobsterfancy
And what does that have to do with him finding this movie dull?
  • capawesome
He's seen the whole film through a 60 second teaser? Impressive powers there.
  • capawesome
Your post has the same effect on me.
  • quintushalls
If you're going to criticize something, a good 'why' would be nice. Why are you yawning? Can you be a little more descriptive?
  • BrendonConnelly
It seemed cliched to the point of tiresomeness. And I need another "physics mangling" fight scene, or another action set piece that just does the same old wire work/rotating room gag like I need a hole in the head.
  • c'mon its nolan. memento nolan. insomnia nolan. dark knight nolan. i give the man wide latitude. and that corridor toss looked satisfyingly physical i thought. remember batman planting on the car? that was crunchy.
  • i think they call it a teaser for a reason, at least wait until the full trailer comes out to make up your mind.
  • SP12
Physics mangling? Given your writing style I knew you were a tad slow, but this is a new low. For a person who is a supposed "expert" in his field, the field being trailer watching and rumor pedaling, you sure missed a lot of that trailer.

It was plain to see that gravity was being observed to its fullest, thats why the character were falling around the room instead of flying like you suggested. From the characters falling after Leo picked up his head to the subtle innuendo of the top spinning, the trailer gave you depth and something to ponder in 30 seconds. But I guess it didn't give you awesome video game CGI to ogle, that would have been right up your alley.
  • BrendonConnelly
Gravity was not being observed to its fullest for one very clear reason - gravity doesn't CHANGE DIRECTION.

Oh... and 'hotel corridors' aren't manifest physically inside people's skulls either.

So, yeah. It's mangled. In and of itself, whatever; as the latest in a string of these sequences... less interesting.

Did you wake up on the wrong side of the bed this morning or what?
First: Every shot looked beautiful, the cinematography is amazing and I don't think you can deny that, at the very least.
Second: I think what he was saying was that the fight scene seemed to be more like the corridor was spinning, rather than gravity itself changing. But it could go either way. And how the hell can you be hating on pretty much the only shot of Levett that we got in that teaser? The man is solid, rarely disappoints. And we may have seen Keanu in gravity bending fight scenes, but never have we seen Levitt in one. I could go for some Levitt ass kicking, whether that be in a spinning hall or a gravity bending situation.
Third: i still do not see how you can be this upset about a teaser trailer that gave away almost zero plot. Wait for the actual trailer for your yawning. Unless, of course, you're just trying to be cool and go against the grain on this one. When I saw this attached to IB, the audience was loving it, a big round of applause at the end for Nolan.
So in the end, who really gives a crap if one critic yawns at a teaser?

If there's enough for you to love, there's enough for me to be bored, surely?
  • presto117
huh... that's all i could think of when i saw the Avatar trailer. It was even worse watching the second time when i found out my theater was one of the "lucky" ones to get it for inglorious basterds. yaaaay...
  • Meli_V
Interesting. It doesn't tell you much of anything, but I'm excited for anything Christopher Nolan is planning to bring to cinema.
  • tenno
Nolan does not mess around, that looks amazing, and the booming score, holy crap. I think its going to be less Matrix-y than people are saying, the hallway scene, the tub, the water glass and city rotating all look more like everything turning, not gravity-defying flying and leaping. Can't wait to see how the rest of that amazing cast plays out.
  • Not too much to go on, but it looks great so far. I'm also more excited about the casting & director than anything else right now.
  • starfox
Looks way better than Avatar, that's for sure.
  • richmcleod
Ever since 'The Prestige', Christopher Nolan has been on a fucking roll. This looks insane.
  • jasonb26
i'm gonna have to say, ever since 'following'...but that's just me. most would at least agree that ever since 'momento', he's been truckin along.
  • I'd say insomnia falters bit the rest yeah are knockouts.
  • quintushalls
I love the Following, especially the Batman symbol found in the picture. You can watch the full movie on Google Video.
  • jasonb26
has that same rhythm sound as 'revenge of the fallen's' 1st teaser trailer. this is going to be too much fun!
  • Not impressed at all. It's not enough to go on. I know it's a teaser, but that's why I hate so many teasers. I might even say that I am less excited now that I've seen this.

The movie will hopefully be great, don't get me wrong, but they could've done a better job on the teaser.
  • Frederik
Why release anything more than what was shown when the movie is almost a year away? No one forced you to watch it anyways.
  • I know no one forced me, but that's like saying only critics who know in advance that they're going to write a positive review should see a film. Now the studio does want me and everyone else to see the teaser, in other to be 'teased'. I expected the same result and felt disappointed. You might not feel the same way, but I'm not forcing you to.

I'm excited about the film, so I expect any marketing/trailers surrounding the film, trailers I still want to see, to have some quality. To be honest, the footage wasn't that good. Even if the movie's a year away, why release anything at all if it's not going to represent the film's quality accurately? The footage in this teaser didn't do its job, in my opinion. It was very plain, not something that immediately grabs your attention.
  • EvanJDeBiase
    downer
  • Haha, I know, but come on, the teaser was...meh. It didn't really show anything except some random shots. I'm really not expecting a full trailer, but even for a teaser, it fades away in an ocean of other meh teasers.
