Last night saw a special marathon screening of the extended editions of all three Lord of the Rings films at London’s BFI IMAX cinema, which is where where I caught the Avatar Day footage as it happens. I wasn’t present for the Rings overnighter, but some friendly snoops were and they’ve tipped me off as to something very exciting that started the proceedings off with a bang.

Ian McKellen was present in person to intro the screenings, and while he only spoke for a very short time, he managed to get the crowd into something of a frenzy. Not only did he confirm that he’ll be coming back as Gandalf, and is expecting to start work on set in March of next year, he also dropped a bit of a casting bombshell. According to McKellen, the starring role of Bilbo Baggins has been successfully cast already. Not only that, but he knows who has the role and he’s sure that the fans will be very, very pleased. Immediately the crowd started murmuring about James McAvoy, which suggests to me that they haven’t been keeping up on their Slashfilm. Over just the last few days we’ve revealed that he’s signed on for I’m With Cancer and is negotiating for a role in Robert Redford’s Lincoln drama The Conspirator. This isn’t a man with a big Hobbity hole in his calendar, it would seem.

McKellen also revealed that he is expecting his own personal copy of “the script” within the next fortnight. This is most likely, I feel, to be just the script for the first film, dramatizing the first half of Tolkien’s The Hobbit novel. Jackson appears to have made it clear recently that work was drawing to a close on that portion but that they were much further back in developing the second part.

There was an awful lot of gossip and buzz in the audience at the BFI IMAX last night, with some purporting to be in the know and even claiming that Guillermo del Toro has started shooting already. I’ve had lots of this rumour related to me but it all seems flimsy and fabricated, maybe just ‘improbable’ at best. For now I think we’ll just stick with what McKellen was offering and hope that his tease is thwarted soon by an official announcement of the casting.

  • Finally some facts for this project. I'm getting excited now :D

And Bilbo will be played by....Ian Holm! Of course, he'll be doing motion capture, with the WETA folks replacing him with a 25-year-old version of himself. Eat your heart out Cameron!

That would be interesting and fairly accurate to the previous movies. But I think Guillermo is going to have his own style on the hobbit world and it may be slightly different from Jackson's. Guillermo is well known for his monster creations. And while I think he would want to respect the earlier film, I wouldn't expect it to be an exact transition.
  • Bilbo was 55-ish in The Hobbit...
  • The Great Cambino
Yeah, which is the equivalent to a thirty-something human. It's in the first few pages of LOTR.

    so was frodo

that would be AWESOME but i feel like it's too big of a risk. big probability of falling into that uncanny valley or the character just being unbelievable. but if anyone can do it, weta can
  • Haha I'd love that - but as awesome as Ian Holm sounds, having him in digitally would make the budget extraordinarily higher - and he probably doesn't really move like a 30 year old man anymore, at least not enough on mocap. Even a Ben Button-style head replacement doesn't sound very Guillermo (or practical) to me

I was really hoping that the James McAvoy would be the starring role. I think he is perfect for it. I hope that whoever Guillermo chooses, it would be a perfect film. It is a shame for Ian to say that he knows who it is and then doesn't say who it is. It will obviously be on the IMDB cast list anyway before the movie is released, what is the shame of saying who it is a few months earlier?

Awesome. Hope whoever got picked to play Bilbo is as good as Mr. McKellen is saying.

    I trust his word though.

Ugh! I don't like Guillermo! He's no Peter Jackson. His stuff is way too slick, and except for Doug Jones performances, lifeless. I remember seeing Chronos when it came out on VHS (wow. I am an old fart.) and being quite disappointed considering the considerable buzz from the horror rags like Fangoria. I still don't like his movies. Hellboy 2 was neato looking, but had little heart. I think that's his big problem, at least by me: his movies ain't got enough heart. "Bad Taste" and the like, however, are soft, rough around the edges and full of heart. Literally and figuratively.

Wow, nice to meet someone else who doesn't love del Toro like everyone in the world seems to. I really try to like his movies, but I just can't, they're always beautiful but never that entertaining, Hellboy 2 was a step up but still not impressive.

Im also quite worried about his signing on to direct these films. The only thing I can hope is that Jackson remains in a good position of creative control. The other glimmer of hope is that Jacksons first few films really weren't as amazing as LOTR is, so maybe the same thing will happen with Del Toro.... I guess we have to wait and see.

Pan's Labyrinth had no heart? Got to disagree with you on that one. That one film alone proves he's got the chops for The Hobbit. And like Jackson, he has a great appreciation for practical FX, creative camera work and darker fantasy elements. I have no worries about his directing ability. I just hope they get the screenplay(s) right. If there was anything wrong with the LOTR trilogy it was in the writing.
  • What was wrong with the writing?! It translated from the books vey well, in my opinion.
  • I just finished my own private marathon of the 3 extended cuts. What a coincidence! As to the Bilbo casting, I kind of hope it's not MaCavoy. I think he's a fine actor, it's just he seems to me to be more of a Frodo type than Bilbo. Then again, it's been years since I read The Hobbit, and I still have fond memories of the cartoon, in which Bilbo was pretty plump. Also I'm extremely interested in how Del Toro will handle the world of Middle Earth, considering that he'll have at least one returning actor, and he'll have to stay at least slightly faithful to Jackson's original trilogy. All in all though, I'm VERY excited for the film and hope it ends up being as terrific as the originals!

WAIT!!! They should still do the two different films! One about Hobbit and the other one bridging the gap!!!
