Youth in Revolt Movie Trailer

Youth In Revolt

Dimension Films has released the first trailer for the big screen adaptation of C. D. Payne’s epistolary novel Youth in Revolt on moviefone. Michael Cera stars in this “irreverent story about the wild adventures of a teenage boy named Nick Twisp who meets the girl of his dreams while on a family vacation and has to turn his life and the lives of all those around him upside down in order to be with her.” Newcomer Portia Doubleday plays Sheeni Saunders, and the film also features Steve Buscemi, Zack Galifianakis, and Ray Liotta.

The first thing I noticed from the trailer was the dark comedy, something I just wasn’t expecting as I’ve never read the novel. Also, Cera seems to be going for something different than his usual shtick. The film premieres in a couple weeks at the Toronto International Film Festival. Watch the trailer after the jump, and leave your thoughts in the comments below.

Youth In Revolt is scheduled to hit theaters on October 30th, 2009.

  • Seeing Cera play something other than the dumb kid would be nice as I've never been particularly impressed by him in the point that he seems to play similar characters. Hey if it works for him great, just never am able to really get into any of his movies. The only one that semi did it for me was Juno or Nick and Norah's Playlist, mostly because after having my gf explain certain aspects of his characters that I found to be out of place I semi appreciated his ability to portray an over the top nerd.

oh i agree chris. i would love to see cera do some stretching acting wise. like playing the villain in a bond movie or a role next to stallone in the expendables!

anything to see that boy shirtless again

    ;)
  • James
Right on bro. Cera has yet to "stretch" himself as an actor. Glad to see him do something other than his usual schtick.
  • wazuu
Dude I totally agree with you, I'm pretty sick and tired of Michael Cera being the same character in every movie, actually I'm pretty sick of Michael Cera period.
  • Stephanie
I just think he's been most comfortable being George Michael from Arrested Development. That character was great, but it gold old after those 'cute' feel-gooderies. I think stepping out of that hole and into Nick Twisp will do him a world of good, I think!
  • I hear you there man. Seriously, anyone got any movie that he might be in where he doesn't play a virginal idiot?
  • GregoryV
Michael Cera plays a 'G'? Yea, I'm diggin this.
  • I like his mustache
  • Love the mustache. Looks great.
  • Swarley
This looks to me like Cera trying really hard to act differently, but failing. His psudo-persona seems a little more different, but it still seems like Michael Cera trying not to be like himself. Because I'm so used to him acting one specific way, anything different just seems like bad acting. And it's really sad.
  • jason
i'd rather body myself than watch anything with michael cera
  • Oh come on people, this isn't different from his normal shtick!
  • bort
yeah, in the book Nick Twisp is nothing like george michael bluth or any other michael cera incarnations so it's good to see him acting different.
  • this looks fucking great!!!

the "two" Michael Ceras reminds me of fight club
  • Except that it would be infinitely better if his alter self was Brad Pitt like The Narrator's was.
  • L_Ron_Jeffard
Strange looking film, but I did like the suicide gag.
  • agemoi
haha im psyched for this one. Looks really funny actually. Seeing two michael ceras workin it. Good shiz
  • capawesome
It's the hipster Fight Club. But without the Fight Club part!
  • Scruffmcgruff
    so it's just the hipster?
  • RosanatorDA
    how is that fight club?
  • zebrat
    how is this hipster?
  • djoser
Because he's a skinny guy in tight pants w/out confidence who whines a lot.

And because everything he' s been in so far is hipster - he is THE poster boy for the hipster!
(the word itself is one which I refuse to capitalize)
  • "Youth in Revolt" is a great book--darkly funny and sardonic, the trailer looks pretty accurate, though I'm not totally sold on Cera as Nick Twisp. The further adventures of Nick Twisp can be read in "Revolting Youth"
  • theAguilar
Seeing Cera at least attempt to not be George Michael is a huge step forward. He's not completely succeeding, yeah, but he's not completely failing either! However, this does dash my hopes of his possible great Scott Pilgrim portrayal. But I can't rightfully judge that until I see something of it. Maybe Edgar Wright is what Cera needs to excel.

Wow. I laughed more during that trailer than during any straight up comedy I've seen in a long time. I am now quite excited for this. Also: damn, that's a nice mustache.

P.S. this could just be me since I saw it but I do think that this trailer reveals a lot from the film. A bit too much.
  • frelling_cute
Used to like this guy but he plays the same geeky awkward boy in every movie.
  • Nick1
I thought it was very funny, but wildly uneven. Remniscent of Arteta's other films in that way. I do look forward to it though.

I saw a test screening of this earlier this year and I thought it was pretty good. I haven't read the book but I enjoyed the film. I thought it could have been a bit better but I wasn't disappointed. And I know that Michael Cera plays the same character in his movies to the point that its like Michael Cera in different situations. He's so good at playing that character we've seen in "Superbad", "Juno" etc, that it seems somewhat real. He also kinda does it in "Youth In Revolt," but he also does something really awesome and different this time. A character that I really enjoyed and was a bit impressed by. The cool character, Francois Dillinger. Its something different and badass especially compared to his previous roles. So definitely check it out just for that alone if you wanna see him in a different light. I would say what else I thought about the film and some things I didn't like and could have been better but I don't wanna spoil anything until the film has been released. So just check it out if you get a chance when it comes out this fall. Peace

    P.S.
It could just be me since I was the film but I think this trailer shows a lot. A bit too much.

The trailer is very much in the spirit of the book. This movie has been delayed several times. It was suppose to open last Christmas!
I'm tired of Cera's lost little puppy act but his alter-ego (straight out of the book) seems to allow him to spread his acting wings.
I was surprised to see this is rated 'R'!
  • MonsterKilledThePilot
This looks awesome! I love seeing him play a darker character like he did in 'Clark and Michael'.
  • Poland626
I went to a test screening back in June of this and Cera does play himself for only half of the film. The other half he's his alter ego type of guy. It was very good and everyone in the theater liked it. Also, it felt like a PG-13 film but little scenes like drug use and animated sex brought it to the R. I thought they would cut it but apparently not. All the actors are great too and it ended on a note I didn't expect but I never read the book sooo.....yeah.
  • I'm so sick of people bitching about Michael Cera playing the same charecter in every movie. Besides Year One, he's never been in a bad movie in my opinion
  • zebrat
i agree. it just seems like people want to bitch about Cera cuz it's cool or something. well kids, it's not cool. drugs are cool. stay in school.
  • I think the reason most geeks hate on Cera and Jonah Hill and Seth Rogen and Shia Labouf and even Kevin Smith is becuase it frustrates them that guys that are kinda like them in terms of looks or personality are famous and sucessful while they are not
  • Name
I saw a screening of this film a while back, and (no spoilers) it was great. I expected Cera to play his usual Cera role, which he sort of does, but he also breaks out with his alter-ego. As someone who did not read the novel, I thought the movie was smart and funny. I definitely recommend it.
  • Maracle2
Read the book after Dan talked about it on the Totally Rad Show. I loved it and was wondering how the film would look.

looks pritty funny even if Cera is doing his regular ol' act
  • I loved the book, so i'm excited. from what I remember, the stuff shown was only from the early part of the book, so it will be interesting to see how they pull off some of the later things in it. The look is really cool too. I'm digging the colors. feels like the book for the most part.
  • Palmer
Hopefully Cera can play someone besides George Michael. But it looks pretty good.
  • Name
Me, Myself and Irene much???? So similar, even some of the scenes.
  • zebrat
i was going to say how Cera only ever plays George Michael in everything he's in. but then i realized how boring and redundant such a comment would be. so, i'm gonna go drink coffee now.
  • The end of that trailer literally made me bust out laughing...
  • displacedbrett
Haha, this movie looks hilarious. Now I won't have to read the book (cross that off the 'bucket list'). I don't care if Cera can only play one type of character, he's great at it. Can't wait for this flick.

Great also to hear The Old 97's song "Timebomb" at the end of the trailer. Been a fan a long time, glad to hear them getting some love!
  • yzzy
Has anyone seen the movie yet?? i wanna see it tonight but im slightly under age so i need my dad to get the tickets for me. he won't do that unless he knows there isnt a lot of sexual content. is there a sex scene? please hurry.
