Surprising, there's no nomination for The Dark Knight. That movie had an awesome score!

HANS ZIMMER (Frost/Nixon, Angels & Demons, The Dark Knight)

For FILM COMPOSER OF THE YEAR, I think it will come down to Alexandre Desplat and Michael Giacchino. Though I think Hans Zimmer should win.

For BEST ORIGINAL SCORE OF THE YEAR, Desplat may get it.

For BEST ORIGINAL SONG WRITTEN DIRECTLY FOR A FILM, I'm hoping that the Bruce Springsteen song will win.
  • I'm surprised that The Dark Knight didn't get the nomination for Score of the Year. That score made that movie so much better.

I thought Jon Brion did a great job with the score (and song) for Step Brothers.
But he did even better on the Masterful Synecdoche New York soundtrack.
He should be on this list instead of most of these other guys.

by world do u they mean hollywood?

Composer of the Year - Giacchino hands down, for scoring three films that were so closely released, yet so diverse in their scores. Even Land of the Lost had a great score, and it was a meh movie at best.

Original Score - Benjamin Button. Love or hate the movie, the music is beautiful.

Best Original Song - Gran Torino. A fitting epilogue to an amazing picture.

It's a shame I'll have to wait a year to see Mansell win something for Moon -- that was a damn good soundtrack.
  • I agree. It was a subtle score and not one that you would go around humming or anything but it controlled the mood of the film the entire time. Hopefully it will get some recognition at the Academy Awards. Hopefully the entire film does, really. Best Picture and Best Actor nominations are in order for that film. I think it would be cool to see Rockwell get nominated for both Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor since he was both. lol

My god... "Gran Torino" is a horrible fuckin song... I can't believe it was even considered, let alone nominated... I hope springsteen wipes the floor with that song, especially after he got gyped at the oscars.
  • Kyle C.
Yea, it's B.S. that nobody recognizes the brilliance of The Dark Knight's score. It's my favorite score in a long time and it made the movie even more epic. It is the first film score I've bought since The Rock, also by Hans Zimmer
  • TheRealMrB
No Coraline? Bruno Coulais's work on that film was perfect.
  • Happy_Evil_Dude
The irony about all this "original song" stuff, is that Jai Ho wasn't "written directly" for Slumdog Millionaire. It was written for another film but was rejected, so A.R. Rahman plucked it out of the trash an tacked it on to Slumdog.

Good - Springsteen can get what Oscar so stupidly didn't give. Springsteen not winning for The Wrestler will go down as one of Oscar's all time biggest gaffs I say.
