THR’s RiskyBizBlog reports that Robert Redford will direct The Conspirator, a film about Mary Surratt, said to be an accomplice of Lincoln assassin John Wilkes Booth. While this movie is a far cry from Steven Spielberg’s intended biopic about the President, nonetheless it is a bit surprising to hear about another major director taking on a project so close to Lincoln when Spielberg isn’t yet able to get his own financed.

You might have read about Surratt in Manhunt: The 12-Day Chase For Lincoln’s Killer, by James Swanson, but this isn’t an adaptation of that book. (There is another film project, by HBO and Walden Media, that might adapt that directly.) James Solomon wrote this script, and while the article doesn’t mention his sources, chances are the screenplay is drawn at least in part from Kate Clifford Lawson’s book The Assassin’s Accomplice: Mary Surratt and the Plot to Kill Abraham Lincoln. Previous to Lincoln’s assassination, Surratt’s son John had conspired to kidnap the President. Despite her protestation of innocence, Mary Surrat was arrested as a conspirator in Lincoln’s assassination and was sentenced to death; she is said to be the first woman executed by the United States Federal Government.

THR doesn’t mention who might play Mary Surratt, but says that James McAvoy (who’s having a good night, with another announcement) is high in the running for a lead male role in the film. He could play John Surrat, who was 21 at the time of the assassination, or one of the other men Mary Surrat was said to have provided arms to on the night of the killing. Even better, I’d love to see him as Booth.

Redford has also been set to direct Against All Enemies, based on Richard Clarke’s book about the recent Bush administration’s intelligence woes, but THR notes that project’s future is uncertain. Whichever goes first will be Redford’s follow-up to the truly awful Lions For Lambs, which at least had one of the better uses of Tom Cruise in recent memory.

Hollywood is notoriously lame when it comes to pulling off authentic historic
period films. Everything looking too tacky and GQ.

Truly Redford's been rich and comfortable ----too long!

It is my opinion as well, that Mary Surratt did not play a direct role in the killing of the President. However, her role in the conspiricy should leave no doubt about her guilt.About an hour before Lincoln was shot,a man named Richard Smoot came to Mary's"H"st boardinghouse.Earlier, he sold a boat to Mary's son John and was probably there to see about the rest of the money that was owed for the boat. This is the boat that would be used to carry the President down the Potomac after the kidnapping.Mary informed Smoot that the boat would be used "tonight"and at her suggestion he fled the city.Only half of the money was paid on the boat, with the other half due only if the boat was used.Smoot had his answer.Makes me wonder if Mary believed that the original plan to kidnap Lincoln was still in place all the way up to the last hour before he was shot. Either way ,conspiritor. The popular belief today is that Mary supplied Booth and Herold with weapons. Those weapons were brought to the Surrattsville Tavern by David Herold. After bringing the weapons with him to the T.B.hotel he and John Surratt delivered them to the tavern.Surratt and tavernkeeper John Loydd hid the guns in the attic. They were to be used in the abdution plot.Mary brought only Booth's fieldglass to Surrattsville the day of the assassination. She also bought the message that helped to get her hanged.Mr. Loydd ,IWANT YOU TO HAVE THOSE SHOOTING IRONS READY. THERE WILL BE PARTIES HERE TONIGHT WHO WILL CALL FOR THEM.CALLING FOR THEM..Your right Paul, because when told correctly the "true" story is far more fasinating than anything we could make up.

I would hope that Mr. Redfords research team uses trasnscripts from the Trial of John H.Surratt in their effort to determine guilt or innocence. These give much more insight than the Trial of the Conspiritors.Just Google Trial of John Surratt.Pages 131,(Sargent Joseph M. Dye 276,(John Loydd )515,(J.C Thompson)should be of great intrest in the telling of any story regarding Mary or her son John.History IS NOT history unless it is the truth!A. Lincoln.

The 2nd richest filmmaker in the world can't get a project financed? Dip into your own pockets, Steven. I'm sure the kids don't actually need a yacht.
