Jason Reitman’s new film, a big screen adaptation of Walter Kim’s novel Up in the Air, will premiere next month at the 2009 Toronto International Film Festival. Paramount Pictures has begun releasing promotional materials in anticipation of the film festival release, and have given us an exclusive look at the film’s U.S. one-sheet. I love the simple and very proportionate design layout. I also think the tagline/pun “the story of a man ready to make a connection”, is very fitting, especially if you’ve familiar with the story, and without being too cheesy. Check that out after the jump.

And below we also have the first production photo, featuring George Clooney, although I’m not sure exactly where it came from. /Film reader Ben M sent it over. Click to enlarge.

Here is the first production photo featuring George Clooney:

Up in the Air
stars George Clooney as Ryan Bingham, a corporate downsizing expert whose cherished life on the road is threatened just as he is on the cusp of reaching ten million frequent flyer miles and just after he’s met the frequent-traveler woman of his dreams. The movie also stars Vera Farmiga, Anna Kendrick, Jason Bateman, Danny McBride and others.

This is one of my top anticipated movies of 2009. We’ll be in Toronto for the premiere, so keep checking back for our coverage. The first trailer for the film is set to premiere online on September 10th, and will be attached to The Informant and Love Happens beginning on September 18th. Up in the Air “arrives” (get it?) in theaters this December.

  • reading this book now, glad to see its getting the big screen treatment

Peter, me too! I'm so excited for this movie. Was a huge fan of Reitman's short films, and loved Thank You For Smoking. Juno was a tad bit overrated, but still a great film (I won't give in to the backlash) and I've read the book for this one and loved that. Some of the test screening reviews have been hinting towards Oscar-nominations.

Im sorry but why is /Film giving this film so much damn attention? There's been about 2 articles about 'Up In The Air' on every page, consistently, for weeks now.

I mean, I could understand if this was a huge geek anticipated movie that had high-anticipation going for it all-around. But, its not, this is a recent romantic book being adapted into a movie...we see this every day. And personally the plot, look, and even George Clooney dont make this movie interesting, and they arent getting me excited for this, I doubt the trailer will either.

This looks like a cute romantic comedy thatll come in, make its money worth from female moviegoers, and then go, forgotten about. So im sorry for fans of the novel this is based on, I dont mean to offend or flame anyone, but I hope im not the only SlashFilm geek that is sick of seeing a new writing on this rom-com, every damn day.

Oh and its not that I expect /Film to be nothing but the "District 9s" and "Watchmens", because I dont, this is a film blog, a good one too, but if your gonna promote a fucking romantic comedy to such an extent, at least promote one that looks unique, interesting, and appealing to the /Film reader. This 'Up In The Air', I think, does not.
  • Why are we posting about it?

    1. I have loved everything the director has produced thus far
    2. I love the cast. Clooney, Vera Farmiga, Anna Kendrick, Jason Bateman, Danny McBride. How can that not interest you?
    3. I read the screenplay and its the best script I've read in a few years... And I've read quite a few scripts in those years
    4. Its something more than a romantic comedy... trust me.
    5. I have never written to pander to the readers. I've always written about the movies and filmmakers that have excited me personally, and hoped that it would either connect with others or introduce those things to people who have never experienced them before. We're one of the few movie websites that doesn't actively cover twilight, and we lose out on a great deal of hits because of it... but truth is, I really don't care to post about Twilight, even if it means less readers. I post about the stuff that interests me.

And guess what, if you're not interested -- skip over it. :)

    Respectfully,

    P

Peter, thank you for stopping the horrible flow of angry people. I agree with you on all the points. The script is absolutely fantastic and there is so much to this movie than people think. I have not read the book and I am very excited for the cinema changing Avatar, but I realllllyyy can't wait for this one.

Talk about judging a book by its cover. Cute little romantic comedy? Do you even have any idea? Do you really think Jason Reitman would just make a "cute little romantic comedy?" I suggest you read the book.
  • The poster remind me of the 'The Dark Knight' poster.
  • Confused
RawRodrigo seems to have been slighted by Jason Reitman in the past. I can't imagine a reason why someone could have that much to say about a movie they know nothing about.
  • not like it already about smoking

Nice. Was at a test screening when this shot came up and leaned to my friend and said, "Poster shot." Great poster and great movie. Hope people are excited.
