Warner Bros To Remake Brewster’s Millions

Brewster's Millions

Last month on the /Filmcast, Eric Vespe, better known as Quint from Ain’t It Cool News, mentioned that he is surprised that Hollywood hasn’t tried to remake Brewster’s Millions yet — especially since it’s such a perfect high concept comedy premise, the kind Hollywood loves. Either someone in Hollywood was listening (doubtful, but you never know) or Quint was able to accurately predict what Hollywood would do next, because Warner Bros has hired a screenwriting team to write a new take on the story.

Michael Diliberti and Matthew Sullivan have been hired to adapt a new film based on the 1902 George Barr novel, which has gone on to be adapted for stage and screen almost a dozen times. The 1985 comedy directed by Walter Hill and starring Richard Pryor and John Candy was one of my favorite movies to watch as a kid. It’s definitely not a great film, but its a lot of fun. The story followed a poor minor league baseball player who inherits $300 million from an unknown rich relative. But only under the stipulation that he waste all $30 million in 30 days, with no assets to show for it, without revealing to anyone, including his closest friends, the stipulations of the $300 deal. Watch a clip from the movie embedded below. The original novel, which involved a slightly different storyline, with a lot smaller money figures, is available for free on Google Books.

The screenwriting team doesn’t have any prior produced writing credits, but garnered some good buzz with a spec called Comic-Con. The buddy comedy tells the story of two friends who devise a plan and execute a heist at Comic-Con in order to save their beloved neighborhood comic shop from the danger of an evil corporate takeover.

Discuss: Who should star in a modern day remake of Brewster’s Millions? Any ideas?

  • Honestly, Chris Tucker would nail this movie. However, he does not do movies any more. More importantly, we need to know if this movie will be changed so dramtically that it will be bad to start. To remake this movie, you need to bring back the essence that is the character of Brewster. His emotions, nervousness, craziness, etc.

I think that the following actors can do this movie and do it right:

    1. Chris Tucker
    2. Ben Stiller
    3. Don Cheadle - I realize that he is not comedy but his acting skills would dominate this role and he can do it. It would be awesome!
    4. Jim Carrey - Definitely doable. He has the character to make it a classic,

The do not dare cast members:

    1. Mike Epps - He was hand picked by Richard Pryor to play him in a movie. He would not be good for this role.
2 Will Smith - Bad choice.
    3. Any Female actress - Not a good change in character.
    4. Will Ferel or Vince Vaugh or Adam Sandler - NO, NO, NO!!!

Seriously, I believe I may be close to on point here. What are your thoughts?
P.S. Would Steve Carel be good? Hmmmmmm.....

pig shit? home alone 3 in some of the fans eyes were "better than the first two" personally the first one is the best but home alone 3 is when the guy lost his pants.. and mouse hunt is when the guy lost all of his clothes and home alone 4 is something i dont consider part of the series but it is a great spinoff into another possible home alone series in which marv eats poop for breakfast and his hot wife for dinner and to the guy about the comment bout bernard mac.. im missin him too bud
  • I don't know how I feel about this. Are we really supposed to go around remaking cult movies? Why are these studios taking our beloved flicks away from us...it's just not fair.

    ALSO

This just means one day this annoying conversation will happen.

Friend 1: "So did you like the movie?"
Me: "Well it was Okay, but I liked the original better."
    Friend 2: "Ummm what original?"
Me: "You know, with Pryor and Candy."
    Friend 1 & 2 laugh together.
Friend 1: "That was like...sooooo the 7th time they made that movie."
    I sigh.

Missing Bernie Mac right about now.
  • Tony Delavora
Bernie Mac would have been ideal...His acting was not great but this would be right up his alley.
  • Buddy
No Jack Black. No Judd Apatow. Maybe, maybe Chris Rock. The cast of The Hangover fits in nicely. But let me say again, no one from the Apatow-Sandler Gang (yes, we mean you, Seth and Jonah)

The lead shouldn't be a female. Yes, it's interesting that only black actors are being suggested. How did this become Pryor's defining role? Maybe it is.

Regarding Trading Places, I'm still waiting for Trading Places Again, by Landis, starring Murphy and Aykroyd.
  • Why not Ares Spears and Will Sasso from MadTv...I hear they are available...

They aalready did remake Home Alone.
They called it "Home Alone 3".
  • youngblaze
its not a remake its a crappy sequel thats why its called Home Alone 3. if its a remake it would of been called "Home Alone" but its not.
  • fourhourman
Come on. Is that really the comment you left?

I agree Home Alone 3 sucked, but the true remake of the series is that pig shit Home Alone 4. Just look at the Wiki page if you have neer seen the movie.
  • brandonrandon
Jack Black and Mike Epps. I second trading places, that movie was awesome.
  • Romany Malco would be great in this. (The black best friend in 40-Year-Old Virgin; the doorman in Baby Mama.)
  • NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

That's all I have to say about that.
  • None of the above
Is it worth pointing out that the Richard Pryor version is also a remake? In fact according to the IMDB trivia page for the Richard Prior version, his is the SEVENTH adaptation of the book, so please let's try to get things straight.

As you said before this what's based on a novel and has been adapted before so please stop calling it a remake. This my good friends is just another adaptation, a crappy idea but still just another adaptation of the story.
  • =\

Why? This is a classic comedy and one of Pryor's finest pieces of work. The man just died. Let his stuff rest in peace.
  • Can I play Brewster? This is one of my favorite movies ever, and I'd definitely be able to fit the role. Hit me up Hollywood.
  • eyelark
Damn, I used to watch this movie all the time on tv. I think it's one of the few, possibly only, film that could actually really use a remake. As much as I love and loved it it feels very dated, the ending always seemed really rushed to me. He never even reconciled with John Candy.

Dave Chappelle, Tracy Morgan, or perhaps Demetri Martin could do well in the lead.
  • Chromatin
Dave Chappelle would rock Pryor's role so hard. Too bad it seems he's gone forever. So congrats to Marlon Wayans i guess :(

I think the real question is whether or not they will cast an African-American as the lead, or even make the lead a female.

I recall enjoying Brewster's Millions, almost entirely because of Pryor's performance, but it's hardly worth remaking. I'm surprised that some hasn't tried to remake Trading Places, especially given the current economic crisis. That might actually be a remake I'd be curious about.
  • Octoberist
I predict that it'll be in Development Hell. I'm calling it.
