The White Ribbon International Movie Trailer

white-ribbon1

I have a deep admiration for the films of Michael Haneke, but was still slightly surprised when his new film The White Ribbon won the top prize at Cannes this year. (Even with Isabelle Huppert, who’d previously found Cannes success via Haneke, as jury prez.) We’ve seen some clips from the film, and now that it is about to open in Germany, there’s a German-language trailer. You won’t get a lot of plot, but Christian Berger’s gorgeous cinematography is on full display.

Also in full view is the steadily encroaching tension that is characteristic of Haneke’s films. Some at Cannes called the film too austere and grey, but I’m intrigued by this approach, especially as it seems to shy away from the flat-out assaults that we’ve seen in some of his films. Even without any English dialogue you can get the sense here that something might be very wrong, but not necessarily in the bleakly savage sense of Funny Games. And, in fact, things are weird, as the synopsis suggests.

A village in Protestant northern Germany. 1913-1914. On the eve of World War I. The story of the children and teenagers of a choir run by the village schoolteacher, and their families: the baron, the steward, the pastor, the doctor, the midwife, the tenant farmers. Strange accidents occur and gradually take on the character of a punishment ritual. Who is behind it all?

The White Ribbon will be at the New York Film Festival in September, but hasn’t yet been announced for the Toronto International Film Festival, also in Sept. (Curious, that.) It will hit the States in limited release starting on Christmas Day, courtesy of Sony Pictures Classics. Maybe not exactly the Xmas celebration many people hope for, but I’ll certainly consider it a gift.

I am a big fan of Haneke. I haven't LIKED every movie he's done, but I've RESPECTED every film he's done (and even loved a few of them). This looks like another intriguing film.

Now if only Bela Tarr could figure out Haneke's formula for putting out intelligent, challenging cinema at a reasonably regular interval.

the movie is beautifully crafted, but very slow and "unrewarding" in plot.

I really liked the look of the movie and the music playing over the trailer was very nice as well. I'm interested in seeing this movie for sure.

The narration is quite beautiful and I'm most definitely not doing it justice but I tried my best at translating these huge German sentences. Here you go guys:

    "Magnificent cinema"
    "Fantastic actors"
    "Beautifully shot and very impressive"
"An excellent movie and worthy award recipient"

Narrator: "I don't know if the story I'm about to tell you is corresponding with the truth down to every little detail. (pause) Nevertheless, I believe that I have to describe the peculiar events that occured in our little village because they might be able to shed light on some proceedings in this country. Everything started, if I remember correctly, with the doctor's riding accident."

Man: "Today a little short of two months ago ... the doctor had a riding accident. This accident was caused by a tight rope set up in his garden. We all know that the ones responsible for my son's and the doctor's severe injuries are ... here. Among us. Sitting in this room."

Narrator: "Back in the village I decided to get to the bottom of these incidents."

    (music starts)

Boy to girl: "I have the feeling that you conceal something."
    Girl: "What?"

    Boy: "Envy. Apathy. Brutality."

Woman to boy: "I know who committed all these crimes."

    (choir starts singing)

Man: "When you were little, your mother tied a ribbon for you. Its white color was to remind you of innocence and chastity."

Man to Martin: "I just want to help you. Be honest, Martin."

Narrator: "We all didn't anticipate that this would be the last turn of the year at peace. That in this year a kind of upheaval would begin no one of us would have been able to conceive ... not in the slightest."

    Danke!
  • Somehow this trailer has a "Village of the Damned" feeling.

    i love haneke

71 Fragments of a Chronology of Chance and Cache are my favorites

I'm glad someone else has seen 71 Fragments. I love how everything in done as objectively as possible except for the jib shot at the end that goes "god perspective" on us. Well crafted film.

I have to say, though, that I prefer Le Temps de Loupes to 71 Fragments.

meh. Haneke is overrated. But, who doesn't love watching kids get beaten.
