avatartank

I woke up this morning to find an an email from an anonymous source, with an attachment. A photo from the most anticipated movie of the next year (at least among film geeks). That’s right, the first real photo from James Cameron’s Avatar. I freaked out because I receive cool stuff all the time, which unfortunately the law prevents me from posting. And if I was the one to leak a photo like this, it would surely start a shit storm.

But I wanted to be sure, so I contacted Fox directly to ask permission to post what I had received. It was one of those moves to just make sure, a last resort. I didn’t really expect them to be like “yeah, that’s fine…” but, well, that’s almost exactly what they said. Apparently the photo was sent out to a couple magazines this week, so Fox is fine with me posting this. So here you have it, the first photo from Avatar.

So what is in the photo? (spoilers which will be revealed in the trailer follow) Sam Worthington plays Jake Sully a paraplegic war veteran, who gets the opportunity to travel to another planet, Pandora, to work with a mining operation. Because the planet is so harsh, traditional armor and envirosuit solutions are not good enough to protect miners, and a clone program has developed in which DNA from humans and Na’vi, the natives that inhabit Pandora, are combined. The result is essentially a cloned Na’vi that can house the consciousness of an individual with human DNA. This means that Jake will be able to walk again. The photo above shows Sully in front of the tank that houses his Avatar. Click on the photo to enlarge.

20th Century Fox will be holding a special preview of 15-minutes of Avatar on August 21st, in an event called Avatar Day. Click here to read more. Avatar is scheduled to hit theaters on December 18th 2009.

  • Rockie
    so pumped

    The alien elf is awesome.
  • Pretty cool I guess. I want that trailer..
  • sledge
    AWESOME
  • Hurleys_Flying_Hot_Pocket
HAHA,wow, I saw this picture like 2 hours ago when it was in this week's Entertainment Weekly. Way to get me excited for nothing.
  • jheb
most anticipated film of 2010? i don't know.

    iron man 2
    inception

those probably rank a lot higher for me.

even stuff like the green hornet and looper probably go higher because i'm more interested in their directors than cameron.
  • debo824
Except Avatar comes out in 2009.
  • jheb
hmm. when i read "most anticipated movie of next year" i automatically assume he meant next year.

    my bad.
  • "the next year" not "next year" - meaning over the course of 12 months, not necessarily just January to December.
  • jheb
    ok.

far more excited about where the wild things are, the road, shutter island, and nine, not to mention the films i mentioned before if they come out in the next 12 months.
  • Aren't the Na’vi supposed to be 10' tall? Guess it's a perspective thing, but that doesn;t look 10'.
  • Could have really long legs?
  • It is a perspective thing, but they do have really long legs.
  • About time we unfortunates get something fortunate. I was wondering when we would get an official photo of something from this movie. Now I can't wait for Avatar day to get here.
  • Somehow, I expected it to look less like a cartoon... Maybe I just need to see it in action?

The trailer needs to drop already.
  • All right, so if the conditions in the planet are so harsh, how come they were able to discover a mine, and only afterwards work around the deadly-atmosphere (or whatever) issue? Hmm I smell plot hole... I know next to nothing about this movie, so I'll wait for the trailer. Those aliens look cool, though.
  • This will be explained. I tried to keep that short synopsis as spoiler free as possible
  • billyboy88
Looks very CGI to me, not the 'photoreal eyeball fuck' I was led to expect. Hmm.
  • sammyjankis
Just wait til he comes out of that incubation chamber, let the eye fucking begin.....
  • A@ronW
Seriously?! I cant see one ounce of CG in the picture. It looks like an alien with makeup on. I think since you have never seen a creature like this you assume its all just fake. But If they were real, this is 100% photoreal looking
  • Martin
He's standing infront of a tank of some sort with the alien probably being a mock-up doll of the alien. Where's the cgi??
  • presto117
and.... i'm not interested. honestly, the only reason so far why i'm seeing this movie was cause i thought the first part of harry potter 5 looked great in 3-d and i wanna see some more live action in 3-d. so far everything i've heard and seen looks generic and kinda boring.
  • starfox
Much ado about nothing. You'll see.
  • starscream9289
    This picture tells me nothing!

    FFFFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU
  • mchops
    Sweet! His avatar!
  • Yeah, I saw this is in the Entertainment Weekly yesterday. Looks pretty cool.
  • Anthony_Galindo
I'm decidedly less excited now after seeing what is essentially a blue elf. Oh well, I can only hope it turns out better than the impression that picture gives me.
  • Now this is more like it. I've been getting tired of fanboys clinging to pics of Cameron looking off-camera in every other photo that has run as part of Avatar.

There's a lot of expectation on this now for Mr. Cameron. Hope he delivers. I'm personally still um'n'arr'ing.
  • joe
thanks peter for this photo i know this will be a good movie james cameron never goes wrong once will see the whole movie they will get connected with characters of avatar and will stop questioning them. Here i got the new image on imdb look at it

Will look for your video blog on avatar
  • CopperHead
Sam Worthington should be Marcus Fenix in the Gears of War movie
  • kennethe
The Na'vi looks like Elrond with a smashed nose.
  • Looks good.
  • Scruffmcgruff
Im actually pretty happy about the fact that everything i hear/see from this movie makes me LESS and less interested in it. i think im going to skip avatar day just so that my expectations can continue to decrease, then when i see the actual movie, POW right in the kisser (hopefully).
  • Is Worthington's character in that photo CG?
  • movieguzzler
I guess the alien body in the tank is what Sam Worthington looks like when he goes to the planet. This is based purely on the photo of the na'vi toy photo that was leaked recently and then removed.
  • Scruffmcgruff
no worthington the guy isnt cg. just the dude in the tank
  • Chicken Fingers
What a sissy, i have to put my tail between my legs and go ask FOX since its been out for a week already. Man what a fucking panzy!!!!!!!!!!!
  • Temidien
Yea, like he's going to risk losing his job so some asshole can get an early look at a film.
  • mpezz
I'm probably the only one, but I can't get worked up about this movie at all. I'm excited that James Cameron is back with a new feature, but other than that nothing I've seen so far is blowing me away. The way Fox and Cameron have been hyping this sucker you'd think they'd found a cure for cancer.
  • clarencesomerset
Same here. The story looks pretty cookie-cutter to me, and the character designs aren't that groundbreaking. Even the idea of inhabiting avatars is a staple of cyberpunk.

My point is, if this isn't rendered in revolutionary 3D, then it'll just be another handsome piece of film making - the kind Cameron has delivered before, but which certainly doesn't warrant all the hype so far.
  • Toaster27
Is it just me or does it look like the avatar has a fucking mullet? /facepalm
  • Toby
Why aren't you allowed to post cool stuff you receive from other sources? You're not the one leaking it from the studio. Are newspapers barred from printing information sent to them by anonymous sources?
  • Information is one thing, copyrighted content is another. Publishing a photograph or video which a studio has produced and owns copyright is theft and piracy. You will notice that no exact quotes are included in most script reviews because to quote would be to infringe on the copyright. To be quite honest, movie sites post questionable photos and videos all the time. Usually a movie studio will respond with a cease letter demanding the item be removed. But for higher profile films, like Avatar, who knows? They might believe that the leak is punishable and take it to court.
  • Toby
    Ah, thank you for clarifying.
  • coolstuff
can't wait to see what he's looking at
  • That looks amazing!
  • hoopla
Glad to see Cameron's keeping his signature heavy blue color pallette
