Gentlemen Broncos Movie Trailer

gentlemen_broncos_trailer

I’ve been looking forward to seeing footage from Gentleman Broncos by Jared Hess, and a trailer is now online at Apple. The film follows a high school kid (Sky High’s Michael Angarano) who goes to a fantasy / sci-fi writer’s camp, where the most famous sci-fi author in the world (Flight of the ConchordsJemaine Clement) steals his book idea. We see each author’s version of the book acted out, with Sam Rockwell in the lead each time.
It’s not that I’m a big fan of Hess — nearly the opposite, in fact, based on his previous films Napoleon Dynamite and Nacho Libre — but I love the concept here, and Hess has assembled a fantastic cast. And while the trailer has definite touches of Napoleon Dynamite that don’t do a lot for me (but which a lot of people will probably love just as they loved ND, and why not?) there is some fantastic stuff going on.

Clement’s caricature of a pompous author is a lot of fun, and to someone who has digested more crappy ’80s sci-fi and fantasy flicks than is really necessary, the Sam Rockwell sequences look as if they could be inspired. (That Cyclops is a dead ringer for the one in Krull, which gets me in a seat, even if I hated the rest of the trailer.) The nods to THX-1138, Star Trek and other films (do I see some Megaforce in there? I think so) could be great, so long as they don’t overwhelm the film.

We’ve already seen some glimmer of this film, as ‘viral’ videos featuring Clement as author Dr. Ronald Chevalier. You can see two of those below; more than anything in the trailer they give me a lot of hope for what Clement has done with the character.

ah ha h ah haah ha hah ha!!! Jared Hess is a genius! Can't wait, looks so funny!
  • I'm sure no one cares but the new age-y music at the end of "Relaxating" is "The Oh Of Pleasure" by Ray Lynch from his 1984 album Deep Breakfast.
  • Matt Depp
There are probably few people who caught that. I only heard it briefly in one of the trailers and wasn't quite sure. Hit the web to double check. Thanks for the confirmation. I loved listening to Deep Breakfast when I was a kid. (still do!)
  • That looks funny! I love that Dr. Ronald always has a bluetooth in!!!

If anyone reads this thinks a bluetooth is cool...its not!!! Unless your a tool bag.
  • The fantasy sequnces were fantastic; everything else seemed like Naploen Dynamite reheated. I really liked Nacho Libre though

Jermaines character sounds like imitation Alan Rickman.

    So far, looks hillarious.
  • I wasn't expecting much from this, but it looks fantastic. love jermaine.
  • Bryce can't Reed.
    Jemaine. No "R".

this is just an indie version of Big, Fat Liar. I'd still watch it though.
  • I've read the script and the great thing is that none of the funniest parts of the movie were in the trailer, and the trailer was still funny.

This looks amazing, I'm a huge fan of Sam Rockwell!

And btw, it's Jemaine, not Jermaine.
  • I'm very iffy with this trailer. As a fan of Flight of the Conchords (Both the band and the show), the author character looks like a fucking knee-slapper. The fantasy sequences look like they could get me in a seat, too. But those terrible Napoleon Dynamite-like sequences are unbearable. Anything involving Jared Hess or his character's mom is a no-go for me.

Ditto. The trailer was a mixture of light chuckles and groans for me.
  • So, so , so excited. I have several friends that worked on the set and all reports sound amazingly good. This is the first time we will really see what Hess can do without budget constraints (Napoleon) or studio pressure (Nacho). Hold on to your deer horns!
  • Oh wow, me likey very much! As a diehard Conchords fan, I must say I cannot wait to see Jermaine with his big screen debut! (Eagle vs. Shark is a mulligan) Plus it looks like a dead ringer on bad sci-fi/fantasy books.
  • I'm sure I'm not the only one who is noticing the likeness to Big Fat Liar, but I liked liar so much, so I'm fine. And it looks funny as hell too.

@ Russ: "(do I see some Megaforce in there? I think so) "

Uh...yeah. Like in the pic at the top of the article? :P

But I digress...this one looks just bizarre enough to be a great one.

Awesome! Can't wait to see Rockwell in this.

I really liked Napoleon Dynamite but wasn't a huge fan of Nacho Libre. This movie looks funny and so I'll check it out. Hopefully the director can hit a 2 for 3 with me lol.

The only thing that bothered me with Napoleon Dynamite was the character Napoleon Dynamite; other than that, I have a lot of confidence in Jared Hess. Looking forward to it.
  • bucho
I enjoyed Nacho Libre much more than most, I love Sam Rockwell more than life itself and Jemaine Clement about as much as life itself so every second they're in front of my eyestalks in this trailer I'm grinning like a schoolgirl.
  • superozy
whats that song i nthe trailer, where the guy sings osmething liek " in the year 23 something"
  • TVN
    It does look pretty funny.
  • I wasn't expecting much from this, but it looks fantastic. love jermaine.
