Astro Boy Movie Trailer

Astro Boy

Summit Entertainment have released the first full feature trailer for their big screen computer animated adaptation of Astro Boy (you might remember we previously posted the second teaser trailer here).

Produced by Imagi Animation Studios, the guys responsible for the recent computer animated TMNT film, and set in futuristic Metro City, Astro Boy is about a young robot with incredible powers created by a brilliant scientist named Tenma (Nicolas Cage). Powered by positive “blue” energy, Astro Boy (Freddie Highmore) is endowed with super strength, x-ray vision, unbelievable speed and the ability to fly.

Embarking on a journey in search of acceptance, Astro Boy encounters many other colorful characters along the way. Through his adventures, he learns the joys and emotions of being human, and gains the strength to embrace his destiny. Ultimately learning his friends and family are in danger, Astro Boy marshals his awesome super powers and returns to Metro City in a valiant effort to save everything he cares about and to understand what it takes to be a hero.

Nothing I’ve seen so far from this film has impressed me much, which is a shame because (stupid story aside) I really enjoyed the stylistic animation employed in TMNT. Astro Boy just seems a bit too vanilla, and the corny jokes sure don’t help. I think I’d rather see a big budget Japan-produced 2D/3D animation hybrid produced using the character. Watch the trailer for yourself below, and tell me what you think in the comments.

Astro Boy hits theaters on October 23rd 2009.

  • Rockie
i could do without guns in the butt

other than that i liked what i saw
  • TestType
Machine guns in the butt is part of what makes Astro Boy Astro Boy. This isn't anything new their inventing for this film.
  • asianrage
    Ditto.

Looks like this movie could be fun to watch.
  • meh.
  • crankygonzo
i agree w/rockie the machine guns in the butt thing was kinda dumb, but i thought the movie looks pretty fun and i could easily see my niece and nephew loving it.
  • grb
I believe the original Astroboy had lasers in his butt
  • haha. The evil robot talks like a deaf person

But yeah. I can see that last line "I've got machine guns...in my butt?" being a favorite among college campuses nationwide.
  • Scruffmcgruff
have you ever been to a college?

haha right on with the deaf person thing tho.
  • Sarcasm, Scruff-bro
  • Sketch
    Sure it was.
  • Ha!
  • dagreenman18
I hope to god this is just the trailer, and that they did not boil down Astro Boy to a run-of-the-mill idiot fest.
  • uhh, too kiddie
  • You expected Shakespearean drama?
  • Maybe he ends up killing his robo-uncle
  • Octoberist
I was expecting something less generic.
  • graham7x
was that the food critic from ratatoui
  • donivan
    Nothing spectacular.Mediocre at best.
  • Saladinho
Hard to get excited about this. Too generic I'm afraid.
  • jay23
if only they could have made big guy and rusty the boy robot with this budget
  • jasonb26
visually it reminds me of 'meet the robinson's'. but i think what peter said about a "Japan-produced 2D/3D animation hybrid produced using the character..." would definitely be a better film.
  • cantona_x
sigh, the doctor seems so unimportant in this trailer
  • Sketch
More robot action then both Iron Mans combined, what?!

Hehe jk. In a lot of parts it looks generic but I would like to see it for the action sequences. I know someone said that the Dr seems to be a far less important then he should be but we'll have to watch and find out for sure.

After the trailer my only thought was:

    Nicholas Cage?
  • Meli_V
I was part of a test audience for this and though the movie wasn't complete it is definitely a kid's movie. It has a couple of dark moments, but all in all its pretty generic. Kids will really like it and adults might find some enjoyment.
  • Michael_C
I saw nothing that interested me, however I certainly heard Kristen Bell. Not enough to get me to go, but still.
  • quintushalls
This movie looked really good until the characters opened their mouths.
  • HolyShitMatt
Looks like I'll enjoy it, could've been great.
  • Martin
Yeah, now I know how the movie is gonna end and I wont have to see it. Thanks Trailer-makers!
  • Octoberist
There's a part of me who thinks that this should have been a live action movie. If I had it my way, I would make Astro Boy into an animinatronic/CGI character (think how the pirates look in Pirates of the Carribean THE RIDE). Taping into the uncanny valley but keep the big head. It would be creepy.
  • It's okay. It's not great, but it'll do.

Somehow I expected a younger voice for Astro.
  • signmeup
    .
  • signmeup
    dug the tezuka cameo
  • nickJ
where's apollo?!!? he was the best villain in the series.
  • Name
dont care what any snooty manga fans say, it looks bloody fantastic, tezuka must be pleased
  • Chaypeta
If you go into the cinema knowing that it is (a) a watered down westernised story and (b) aimed primarily at children then you can enjoy it. I did, and so did my three kids who have never seen the original Astroboy series (I've seen all three including the orig black and white produced by Tezuka himself.) If you're looking for strict adherence to the original concepts and tragedy then you probably shouldn't go see this version of the story.
