Louis Leterrier

The Incredible Hulk director Louis Leterrier recently told the Los Angeles Times his dream of collaborating on one part of a quadrilogy of Avengers films for Marvel, which would be released over the course of one Summer:

“To work with Joe Johnston and [“Thor” director] Kenneth Branagh and Jon Favreau and make like a triptych. We do four movies. We release them one a month for the summer. Or even every two weeks or three weeks. And the whole summer would be Avengers summer. So we do it the way they make television shows. One story arc but told in installments by different directors. So all of the directors that touch part of the Avengers world would do a part; we could make the movies shorter, maybe less than an hour and a half, and we use the same sets and save Marvel money.

This idea is crazier and more implausible than Mark Millar’s pitch for an 8-hour epic Superman trilogy which ended with Superman being the last man on Earth. This is one of those ideas that clearly couldn’t ever happen, but that isn’t going to stop me from writing about it. How cool would it be to have a summer of superhero films where one bleeds into the next, each separated by only a few weeks or a month of time? Using the same sets, and filming at the same time would be complicated. Even if the films were shorter than normal, an hour and a half, or even an hour, photography would probably take over a year total. You’re essentially making the equivalent of two long movies. But releasing four special effects-heavy superhero films over the course of one summer isn’t very practical. Even a trilogy of films would be tough to pull off.

Lets forget practicality for one minute. Is there an Avengers story big enough to fill four films? Would you pay to see four Avengers movies in one Summer? I would. Hollywood often talks about striking while the iron is still hot. Summit pushed a Twilight sequel into production before they even had a script. A new Saw sequel hits theaters every Halloween. The theory is that the longer you wait between sequels, the more of a chance that moviegoers will grow away from the material, the franchise.

But big blockbuster films often operate on a different release theory all together. More time in between future sequel releases, allows studios to promote the films as cinema events that don’t happen too often. Would four Avengers films in one Summer dilute the event-nature of the superhero team-up, or would it propel and build as each film is released, month by month? It’s an interesting idea, fun to talk about, but it probably isn’t likely to ever happen.

Anyone remember their 'ancient' history - back when movie serials were the thing? They had kids saving their hard-earned money and packing the theaters for the next installment each Saturday. I presume that isn't practical today, particularly given the time needed to create the special effects. But how about some sort of compromise - and call it 'The Year of the Avengers' or some such - where the studio releases one component of the series each quarter or so of one year starting in the early spring? And to give it the best chance of even happening, what if the story line was something where the first three segments are of sub-teams of the Avengers following different trails of the same plot, and all meet up in the big finale that comes out for the Christmas holidays? That way at least the 3 sub-team films could be filmed at the same time - perhaps with small cameo overlaps to tie them together. There are plenty of examples of this type of storyline all through the history of team comics. Ah well, that's my 2 cents of wishful thinking for ya....

the amount of attention a release like that would get would negate any marketing concers. i remember matrix reloaded and revolutions being released within mere months...but yeah, this is a pipe dream. a beautiful, beautiful pipe dream.
  • That would be so awesome. The shear change of pace and event nature of this type of release would outweigh any part of me getting bored with the material. You see the first then you have to see the rest. It would just be this amazing once in a lifetime event.

That's pretty ambitious of him. 4 Avengers movies in a single summer? Not gonna happen really, but it'll be quite a project if it did come true and if each of them were done right and not half-assed. It will probably be ideal, as stated by others, to be a solution to the actors aging. It's very tempting to think and will surely be quite an orgasmic(?) event, but alas it's only a dream.

    quadrilogy is not a word

How do I say this without sounding like a complete asshole, that's the dumbest thing I've ever heard of. Sure it would be cool to see but I hate the idea of movies shorter than an hour and a half. Financially, it makes no sense, they would be better off making huge epic films for the Avengers much like the LOTR trilogy.

he looks like buster bluth from arrested development

It ain't going to happen but it's a damn fine idea. It would be like a four issue mini or one shot. Four or six issue stories used to be the norm at Marvel. That just doesn't happen these days. Hell, Joe Q. has allowed writers like Bendis to stretch their stories over months and months (and now years as it seems for DARK REIGN) rather than a few key weeks.
  • Why is this dude shooting film on two cameras?
  • popcultural
Of course it would never happen. Think about how much that shit would cost. You're talking at least a $150 million budget on each film, plus marketing.
  • frelling_cute
Do you only have to pay once????!!
  • mchops
This is not a bad idea at all. I would definitely see 4 movies throughout the same summer if the first one is decent. it won't happen for financial reasons but I like the idea.

Louis Leterrier is my kind of crazy person.
  • well if that's the case then they need a script too pull it off

What is a little strange about this is that it sounds as though LL is maybe trying to force his way into the Avengers universe. With no word on Norton's involvement, no LL Hulk sequel announced, and no confirmation as to whether or not Hulk will even be in the Avengers movie, I think this may just be him wanting to stay involved with the Hulk property.

I don't really like his idea at all, but I really liked The Incredible Hulk so I am conflicted. I think it was a very underrated movie. I hope Norton and Marvel can come to terms for an Avengers vs. Hulk scenario. I don't want them to recast him.

I don't think LL will get a Hulk sequel, so he may be looking at Avengers as the only option. So his "dream" seems more like a contrived way for him to be included on a project that he will probably be excluded from, rather than a purely creative dream.

    I could be wrong though.

Any of you guys remember when they did this with the release of digitally touched Star Wars 1-3 a while back? It was a huge success.

I would love to see this! It would be epic, but the studio would need to back it a hundred percent. From a Producer's point of view, it looks like Hell, but if you can pull it off, you may just be the best Producer of all time.

Though, as most people are not keen to the idea, I guess it is best for re-release. They are doing a double feature of Toy Story 1 & 2. Why not like a 3D re-release of the Avenger films when they are finished?
  • darksmilex
That's a good dream, but I don't like Leterrier works.

One huge movie could be hot already, judging by the casting, a lot of crazu superhero in one movie is already big!

But I don't see what is really going to happen with the avenger movie, since each superhero flick been directed by a different director.

What marvel is going to do? have one director to direct all these superhero into one film? or Have all directors to direct one film and only?

I don't see how several directors could direct one film.

One thing for sure, Marvel should make it a huge budget movie because it's going to blow the box office big time if they do it right.

Oh, and "quadrilogy" isn't a word. We've been over this.
  • guywhiteycorngood
This is one of those things that belongs in, to paraphrase Patton Oswalt, filmgeek's heaven. I'd love to watch these four movies, as part of an epic film festival with Kevin Smith's Superman starring Nic Cage, and Stanley Kubrick's A.I.
  • drbenway59
A triptych... Of... FOUR movies?? I think that's kind of like a four part trilogy...
  • almostinfocus
Forgetting money and logistics and all of that, what are the odds of this epic quadrilogy being even remotely good? The directors mentioned who weren't in episodes of "Friends" are responsible for some pretty awful films; even their best films were barely mediocre. Yet some how they have the talent to pull together and make a summer-long superhero epic with an intertwined plot and characters? I mean these guys can barely tell one story well.
  • filmbuffrich
An interesting idea- fusing the blockbuster mentality to the old serial format. Totally impractical, but still fun to think about.
  • Ben C
This would be crazy if they actually put this idea to work. But, don't they want to give each movie time to rack up the cash? 2 or 3 weeks doesn't seem to be enough.
  • Vegetax6
I like the idea but i don't know if its right for the Avengers movie and maybe a normal single film would be better(plus possible sequels) and i don't think it would do well at the box office, all of the movies would be advertised as Avengers on the sides of theaters and people might be confused by there being more than one movie, i think it would just do much better as a single amazing movie. And i think it would be cool if all four directors could work on the movie instead of a single one, although Favreauwould be my choice if i had to choose.
  • why are people telling Leterrier to shut up? he said that it would be his dream to do that, not "this has a 72% chance of happening." I like the idea, but would feel bad for having to wait another 2-3 years for the next round.
  • sauce_1
Wow... I love the idea. As bad as they were, I liked that the Matrix sequels were released close to each other. Like you said, kind of made it a season of scifi. This would also allow such a huge Avengers story to be told. No need to get the audience back up to speed, no need to wrap up a bunch of lose ends at the ends of 1,2,3. Not to mention, it's different! People would be talking about it and you really could market it as the summer of supers....However, there's always the..

BUT, no studio is going to commit themselves to such a risky proposition. Especially not with such huge franchise that Avengers is building up to be. Why cut into the merchandise, the publicity and not to mention, the DVD sales by rushing through all four (or even three)? They would really cut into their secondary money makers like toys and what have you if there was one great big long push instead of three or four.

The other factor? If the first one is only ok, or God forbid, downright terrible, then the other three are dead in the water. Whereas everyone still bought into the idea that Star Wars Episodes II and III might make Ep. I look less crappy because time heals all wounds. Didn't happen., they weren't that much better.

The last con? People would be downright SICK of hearing about these stupid movies by number 4. Overload in ads and exposure would lead to backlash and fewer ticket sales. No doubts in my mind.

Now, most of my arguments have been based on, Why smush three/four films together when you can spread them out. This is flawed because no one ever said that the avengers will be Three movies did they? As far as I know there has only been one announced so far.

BUT! I'd still love to see someone try! A great and mighty experiment.
  • It would definitely solve the problem of all the aging actors, but I think a month apart is too short. Consecutive films and an epic storyline is a great idea though. But working on maybe 4 different movies at once would be SO tiring for everyone involved. There's a lot that really won't work, but I agree, that I'd love to see it happen and I'd definitely go to watch them.
  • samboni
    what a whorish idea
  • Well it would still be a cinimatic event because something like this has never happened, lets be honest it proboaly never happen, so I would go see all four with a month in between, that would be very cool. But it will not happen because it would either take to long to make all 4 movies to have them release together and it would cost a lot of money.
  • MrCavanagh
It really makes you question his perception of film. While it may have only taken 18 months worth of shooting for the live action parts of the Lord of the Rings trilogy, it still took Weta working round the clock to get just one of them out every year for three years straight. Yet Double L thinks they can put 4 hundred million dollar plus films out in one summer as some experimental throwback to the serials of yore.
  • MrCavanagh
Louis should really think before he speaks.
  • EbonPinion
    I completely agree.
He should have just kept his idea to himself.
Nothing is worth mentioning unless it already has the written approval of congress...

    /sarcasm.
  • MrCavanagh
People put too much stock in my opinion when I'm drunk.

/Go post a facebook update or something.
  • Craigasorusrex
While an interesting idea. This is exactly what Marvel/Paramount/Universal need to stay away from so their characters don't turn into stale cut outs that bore most audiences.

What keeps them fresh is the 2-4 year intervals waiting for each of these franchise respective sequels.

If you would make several of these type of films in a non conventional 30 minute episode format every summer you tire out the formula thus collapsing a once successful venture.

Count me unsupportive of this plan on tackling the Avengers. Lets stick to the one film format shall we.
  • asianrage
It's a great concept. I would love to see it come to fruition. But it's not realistic as a business case. With those movies having to deal with multiple distributors and financial backers, it'd be a giant clusterfuck of fail. Regardless, I would love to see it come true. It's a great idea, though not a realistic one.
  • MrCavanagh
What? They'd be produced by Marvel Studios and most likely distributed by Paramount. It'll never happen, but financing and distribution isn't the issue. The only problem is Leterrier running off at the mouth about things outside of his control when he really shouldn't be.
  • Dude, he's not 'running off at the mouth', he's merely stating what his ideal 'Avengers Summer' would be. Jesus.
  • MrCavanagh
Yeah, and it's a really stupid opinion when you take into account the economy of how films are made.
  • Saladinho
    It's not an opinion. It's a dream.
  • MrCavanagh
    Dreams are just that, dreams.
  • Saladinho
English is your second language, isn't it?
  • MrCavanagh
No it goes drunken slur, robot, english and then esperanto. Pfffft, shows what you know.
  • Saladinho
    Heheh...
  • mangoshakes
whoa...they'd come out monthly?? like a comic book? but yeah never.
  • That would be mega epic. Especially if each director's film specialized on the character that they popularized. I think they would need to be at least 90 mins each or the public would complain. At least the guy has ambition. Also I don't think it would take away from the event nature of the films. The whole sha bang would be pitched as the biggest event ever.
  • financially speaking this will NEVER happen. its a neat little idea, but would we really want to have an intense super hero action film right after the other, month after month for a summer?
