Peter Jackson’s The Lovely Bones Movie Trailer

The Lovely Bones

Dreamworks Pictures has released the first trailer for Peter Jackson’s big screen adaptation of The Lovely Bones . The trailer will be attached to Julie & Julia, which hits theaters this Friday. But you can watch it on your small screen at home right now. The film looks beautifully shot and visually stunning. There are many hints of possible Award nominations, which may come year end. Stanley Tucci looks creepy, and Saoirse Ronan looks the exact opposite. Overall, I feel like the story is not an easy sell, and in an effort to get audiences excited, may have given a lot of the movie away. I haven’t read the book, so I could be completely wrong.

Update: I’ve been informed by Elisabeth Rappe that the trailer shows the first chapter and a “dash of the middle” with “some major twists in the book that aren’t even hinted at.” For those concerned that the mystery of whodunit is revealed in the trailer, it is revealed at the beginning of the story. The movie is not a whodunit mystery.

Watch the trailer now linked after the jump. And as always, leave your thoughts in the comments below.

She must weigh her desire for vengeance against her desire for her family to heal. More inconsequential comfort-zone slop from the long soldout Peter Jackson.

Meanwhile Hollywood, media and things generally ARE soldout to the most awesomely genocidal regime in human history ---across the Pacific!

70 million murdered in 'peacetime' -completely unoutted and unanswered for.

You won't be hearing much about it though from Jackson and the rest of
    market-favors suck-up Hollywood.

Many of these comments here are pathetic due to their uninformed nature and faulty premises. This movie was deemed a hard-sell adaptation from the start- due to subject matter. But, as anyone having read the book knows, though not primarily a lurid presentation of subject matter (remember, yes, this story is about a dead young girl, one that has been brutally murdered as told in detached first-person), the story proceeds in that of the girls continued conciousness as she proceeds to heaven, and her observations of the ripples of the aftermath of her disappearance.
So, as far is the trailer "giving things away", anyone having briefly browsed the bookflap of the originating novel would be acquainted with the outline of the novel, and hence- the movie. So, unless you prefer to live in a vacuum, the trailer isn't "telling the whole movie" unless you feel a book-flap summary also does the same. It is in the reading or viewing and experiencing the resonance of the whole arc of the story and emotions where the, uh- story lies.
But briefly, though this novel presentation may not be graphically lurid, this does not prevent it from being affecting, heart-breaking.
I believe the detailed "give-away" nature of the trailer (which so many complain of) was due to a decision to dispel and fend off any rumor that this is a graphic-centric telling of a murder. The emphasis and focus (if movie be true to novel) lies in the murder's aftermath and its fantastic, imagined vision of a concious afterlife and how it might proceed as our life here on earth also proceeds. I actually was astounded in having viewed the trailer- even though it has been awhile since I read the book- in its vision of the afterlife, in that it appeared to be a brilliant interpretation of Alice Sebolds described vision of the young girl's heaven. I did not see it so much as a cliched, "already-done" vision, as some have bemoaned.
I say, no rush to see the flik. Take the time and maybe read the novel so you may form your own images. And then, if you wish, see the film.

Please tell me you hated the ending of the book tho'. I hope Jackson sorts it out and changes it for the better!
  • yungl1nk
story seems ok. but ill be there for the visuals....and SUSAN SARANDON!

btw...people are too hard on King Kong....
  • poorblogger
Pete Jackson will make this film more colorful with the scene..
    Must go

How come the character of Indian ethnicity, Ray Singh, is played by a white guy?
  • sma
Because white people look better on screen, duh.

This looks amazing. Makes me want to pick up the book. Should I or will it be better to wait and watch this first?
  • kenneththemenneth
Read book first. See my post above.
  • LuMendz
Thanks, I will. :) Will be going to the bookstore first thing tomorrow.
  • scoobs
The book was a tad overrated, but still very very good IMHO. I'd read it first if I were you. Once you've seen the movie you probably won't feel as motivated. Reading it first will make you want to see the movie on the other hand to see all these characters and set come to life.

    My $0.02 anyway :-)
  • kenneththemenneth
I also say read book first. (See my post above for details why.)

Wow - this was always going to be visually stunning (WETA's effects always have a better tone and are better lit than DD or ILM) and technically assured, but what blew me away from that trailer was the acting. I saw enough of the "good acting" Mark Wahlberg to be happy (and remember, Jackson doesn't suffer fools when it comes to an actor not working out - Stuart Townsend anyone?), and I reckon Sarandon looks strong, despite what others think. Only gripe is that the trailer had little to no Rachel Weisz, one of the most talented and beautiful people on the planet. Guess that's why they call it a teaser...
  • or ryan gosling, for that matter.
  • Saladinho
I keep thinking about his film Heavenly Creatures, which also balanced fantasy/effect sequences with a serious drama. I think he'll pull it off.
  • This looks promising! Great actors!
  • Captain Awesome
    That looks beautiful
  • I have a feeling the grandma is going to be the weakest part of this film too.

Fuckin' get real old people Hollywood! You ageist shithole

Not young people you make look old or old people you make look young. Have old people in all their oldness act as and like old people.
  • sma
Susan Sarandon is 63 years old.
  • Yeah but she doesn't LOOK 63.

What's so hard about getting an old person that actually LOOKS like an old person?
  • I'd just like to throw out there, despite the fact that most people won't care, that the living sister in the trailer is played by Rose McIver, who is currently the Yellow Power Ranger. It's kind of blowing my mind.

In any case, the film looks beautiful. And Pete no longer looks like a Hobbit to me. Not sure whether I like this or hate this. >_>
  • Rockie
    looks fucking amazing
  • wazuu
Visual were awesome, loved the rose under the ice glaciers. The story hasn't convinced me though, I'll have to wait and see.
  • GreatBigLion
I have to agree with every other commentor and say that this is extremely stunning in terms of visuals. And to reinforce Carlton Hackett's comment, THIS DOES NOT GIVE THE ENDING AWAY. If you're getting that impression from putting the pieces together, then I have to say you're going to be surprised once you see it. It's a very difficult story to adapt to film, and it seems like they took the "rape" out of "rapes and murdered" to lighten the material. I can't wait to see how they candle the unconventional ending.

the book was a bore. i still can't imagine what about it caught Jackson's attention. possibly the visual freedom that came with creating Sebold's heaven...

either way i hope it turns out entertaining.
  • WOW. I'm at a loss for words here. It's gorgeous. I just finished reading the book the day before yesterday! I don't think it's too spoilery, though I would have kept a couple of scenes out of it. Well, that's marketing for ya.
  • joepiscapo
was the beach part an out-take from Contact?

mark wahlberg should be shot through time and space.
  • mcgruff
wait is the murderer...the guy from Devil Wears Prada?
  • Yes.

And the Grandmother is from Rocky Horror Picture show, the mother from The Mummy, and the father from http://www.hulu.com/watch/37753/saturday-night-...
  • Man, some people are so cynical. Then again, it's the internet, don't know why that still surprises me. Think it looks fantastic, didn't even know it existed until now. Very depressing looking, having kids myself probably adds to that feeling I would guess.
  • Visually stunning for sure. Count me in on opening weekend.
  • For those of you concerned that the trailer has given too much away, it hasn't. The ending won't be what you expect, and the trailer seems very spot on from the book. It's sure to be a treat, I think...certainly wish I could say the same about The Time Traveler's Wife movie...I think that's going to be very far off.
  • So glad Peter Jackson wasn't yelling "That's why I'm number 1!" over the entire thing
  • Bennihana
    Can't wait
  • Ugh, accidental double-post. Admin delete please?
  • Goddamn. Brilliant looking film, nicely paced trailer and everything, but sh*t, man -- did they really need to reveal every plot point?? I figured out exactly how it's going to go down now. Talk about spoilers! And Peter Jackson looks great considering how big he was at the start of the LotR trilogy. Good effort.
  • It really doesn't. If the movie is sticking by the book, the trailer only shows things that about halfway into the story.
  • Maybe so, but I know nothing about the book and as a general audience member, I was left thinking 'Huh... no need to see THAT one now.' Thankfully you've pointed out there is still much to gain, AND I'm a Peter Jackson fan (the early stuff, screw LotR), so I'm seeing it regardless. I just think some might find the trailer reveals too much, unaware that it actually doesn't.
  • Just saying, Mark Wahlberg is an Oscar winner. Best Supporting Actor for The Departed.
  • Wrong. Wahlberg was a nominee, but lost it to Alan Arkin for Little Miss Sunshine. If only you had access to something like imdb to fact check that. Oh wait, you do.
  • I don't think you understood what Lance meant, since I agree. Alan Arkin shouldn't have won for LMS, idk if I would've given it to Wahlberg but it was definitely a better performance.
  • Thanks for coming to my defense, but I was just being dumb. I just pulled a nerd faux-pas because I was too lazy to check IMDb. Btw, I think Alan Arkin did better. Mark Wahlberg has about two good movies.
  • Kensei
The trailer alone is like watching a short film, it's just amazing to watch, I think the name Peter Jackson alone was enough to sell this but the trailer just seals the deal. What a fantastic trailer.
  • i hate when the trailer gives so much away. ugh. i hope i am wrong though.
    nonetheless, the movie looks gorgeous.
  • Maracle
looks absolutely stunning, almost brought me to tears. can't wait
  • Fir3Wolf
I've never read the book but I can honestly say that I do want to see this movie. That trailer was visually amazing and just gorgeous. I really like Peter Jackson so I'll be seeing this movie for sure. Also I'm thinking this movie might be R or a hard PG-13, again I haven't read the book so I don't know how dark/violent it might be. Not that it bothers me either way.
  • Wow this looks beautiful. Peter Jackson is fantastic.
  • Dvq
is Peter Jackson sick or something? he is slowly becoming the jesus-looking kinda guy.
  • eddddd
i was thinking the SAME thing like, he is talking all weird and he's used to being in front of cameras, so is ok
  • Federico
Honestly, it looks great. I'll definately watch it when it comes out.

Although, I agree that it feels the trailer revealed too much. I could see the entire plot in this.
I just hope there is some twist or an unexpected turn of events that counters it.

But yeah, hoping the best for this pic.
