Peter Jackson’s The Lovely Bones Movie Trailer

The Lovely Bones

Dreamworks Pictures has released the first trailer for Peter Jackson’s big screen adaptation of The Lovely Bones . The trailer will be attached to Julie & Julia, which hits theaters this Friday. But you can watch it on your small screen at home right now. The film looks beautifully shot and visually stunning. There are many hints of possible Award nominations, which may come year end. Stanley Tucci looks creepy, and Saoirse Ronan looks the exact opposite. Overall, I feel like the story is not an easy sell, and in an effort to get audiences excited, may have given a lot of the movie away. I haven’t read the book, so I could be completely wrong.

Update: I’ve been informed by Elisabeth Rappe that the trailer shows the first chapter and a “dash of the middle” with “some major twists in the book that aren’t even hinted at.” For those concerned that the mystery of whodunit is revealed in the trailer, it is revealed at the beginning of the story. The movie is not a whodunit mystery.

Watch the trailer now linked after the jump. And as always, leave your thoughts in the comments below.

  • best picture nom for sure.
  • zerosum0101
Well there are 10 slots now so that isn't saying much : )
  • sma
You sound just as idiotic as the people who condemn a film before seeing it.
  • Zerosum has a point though. Now all those "would-have-been-nominated" films WILL get nominated. It makes the nomination itself way less prestigious. The honor of winning will still be the same but getting a nom for best pic this year (and years to come if they decide to continue this) is no longer something to covet.

All the academy is doing is eliminating one step from their process. Instead of narrowing it down to five their stopping at ten. There's no way around that.
  • see heavenly creatures and all of jackson's other utterly brilliant works. this has quality written all over it.

Fantastic trailer. The visuals are great and the story also seems solid.

As far as the acting goes Wahlberg seems to be at his best along with Weisz and Ronan.

The others seem ok but that opinion can easily change once I see the movie. Will watch this in December.

Reminds me of Benjamin Button, solid technical work with beautiful cinematography at the forefront, but otherwise fairly vapid. Means its a lock for Best Picture
  • Gher
King Kong had more of an emotional core than Benjamin Button

No reason to imagine this will be as vapid as BB
  • Jarred
Maybe vapid was the wrong word. It's definitely an emotional story (like BB's potential), just, I don't know, something about the trailer made me feel like there will be a disconnect. I'll still watch the movie though, it's obviously too early for me to really judge fairly.
  • whsmith
I totally agree with you. A very glossy and technically perfect looking production, but it isn't grabbing me so far. And I feel like they just showed way too much in the process of trying to sell me on the concept.
  • monkeymafia
Agreed, I tried giving the book a whirl about a year ago because I was interested in what PJ saw in it. It may be a case of the book's just not for me but I couldn't get into the story at all.
  • Yoyoz
    My thoughts exactly.
  • William_Wright
    it looks beautiful. abso-lutely beautiful.
  • darrenvandergriff
i honestly don't know. i was really looking forward to this movie. but after watching that trailer i kind of get a "meh" feeling from it. the heaven scenes look like that Robin Williams movie "What Dreams Are Made Of". I do hope it surpasses my now lowered expectations, though.
  • It's "What Dreams May Come." And I agree, it does give off sort of a similar feel as that movie.
  • darrenvandergriff
    yes. you're right. i'm high.

    jk
  • pn2501
i Really liked "what dreams may come" funnily enough Vincent Ward is also a New Zealander, if its as good or better than i thought that movie was, I'll line up for it.
  • I looks stunning, but I can't help but believe somethings going to be bad... I hope I'm wrong!
  • rko
    The acting and direction.

"She couldn't of been murdered by s stranger it had to be someone she knew! Cause I'm Mark Walberg..."
  • I haven't read the book in years but I think it's straying from Sebold's telling. Book to film aside; the trailer is gorgeous and I'm excited for the full feature.
  • sauce_1
As others have said, the visuals are spot on and very nice. The whole after life vibe reminds me of What Dreams May Come. I don't know the story but from what they've put forward I think it's something I might like.

My only concern? That they're going to cash in the story and great vibe from the first two thirds of the movie for a Hollywood race against time in the last act. I have nothing to base that on other than the trailer, but the set up seems to be there for sure.

None the less, the trailer has put the movie on my radar.
  • Wow this looks beautiful. Peter Jackson is fantastic.
  • Federico
Honestly, it looks great. I'll definately watch it when it comes out.

Although, I agree that it feels the trailer revealed too much. I could see the entire plot in this.
I just hope there is some twist or an unexpected turn of events that counters it.

But yeah, hoping the best for this pic.
  • Dvq
is Peter Jackson sick or something? he is slowly becoming the jesus-looking kinda guy.
  • eddddd
i was thinking the SAME thing like, he is talking all weird and he's used to being in front of cameras, so is ok
  • Wow this looks beautiful. Peter Jackson is fantastic.
  • Fir3Wolf
I've never read the book but I can honestly say that I do want to see this movie. That trailer was visually amazing and just gorgeous. I really like Peter Jackson so I'll be seeing this movie for sure. Also I'm thinking this movie might be R or a hard PG-13, again I haven't read the book so I don't know how dark/violent it might be. Not that it bothers me either way.
  • Maracle
looks absolutely stunning, almost brought me to tears. can't wait
  • i hate when the trailer gives so much away. ugh. i hope i am wrong though.
    nonetheless, the movie looks gorgeous.
  • Allm0st
The trailer alone is like watching a short film, it's just amazing to watch, I think the name Peter Jackson alone was enough to sell this but the trailer just seals the deal. What a fantastic trailer.
  • Just saying, Mark Wahlberg is an Oscar winner. Best Supporting Actor for The Departed.
  • Wrong. Wahlberg was a nominee, but lost it to Alan Arkin for Little Miss Sunshine. If only you had access to something like imdb to fact check that. Oh wait, you do.
  • I don't think you understood what Lance meant, since I agree. Alan Arkin shouldn't have won for LMS, idk if I would've given it to Wahlberg but it was definitely a better performance.
  • Thanks for coming to my defense, but I was just being dumb. I just pulled a nerd faux-pas because I was too lazy to check IMDb. Btw, I think Alan Arkin did better. Mark Wahlberg has about two good movies.
  • Goddamn. Brilliant looking film, nicely paced trailer and everything, but sh*t, man -- did they really need to reveal every plot point?? I figured out exactly how it's going to go down now. Talk about spoilers! And Peter Jackson looks great considering how big he was at the start of the LotR trilogy. Good effort.
  • It really doesn't. If the movie is sticking by the book, the trailer only shows things that about halfway into the story.
  • Maybe so, but I know nothing about the book and as a general audience member, I was left thinking 'Huh... no need to see THAT one now.' Thankfully you've pointed out there is still much to gain, AND I'm a Peter Jackson fan (the early stuff, screw LotR), so I'm seeing it regardless. I just think some might find the trailer reveals too much, unaware that it actually doesn't.
  • Ugh, accidental double-post. Admin delete please?
  • Bennihana
    Can't wait
  • So glad Peter Jackson wasn't yelling "That's why I'm number 1!" over the entire thing
  • For those of you concerned that the trailer has given too much away, it hasn't. The ending won't be what you expect, and the trailer seems very spot on from the book. It's sure to be a treat, I think...certainly wish I could say the same about The Time Traveler's Wife movie...I think that's going to be very far off.
  • Visually stunning for sure. Count me in on opening weekend.
  • Man, some people are so cynical. Then again, it's the internet, don't know why that still surprises me. Think it looks fantastic, didn't even know it existed until now. Very depressing looking, having kids myself probably adds to that feeling I would guess.
  • mcgruff
wait is the murderer...the guy from Devil Wears Prada?
  • Yes.

And the Grandmother is from Rocky Horror Picture show, the mother from The Mummy, and the father from http://www.hulu.com/watch/37753/saturday-night-...
  • joepiscapo
was the beach part an out-take from Contact?

mark wahlberg should be shot through time and space.
  • WOW. I'm at a loss for words here. It's gorgeous. I just finished reading the book the day before yesterday! I don't think it's too spoilery, though I would have kept a couple of scenes out of it. Well, that's marketing for ya.
  • dob
the book was a bore. i still can't imagine what about it caught Jackson's attention. possibly the visual freedom that came with creating Sebold's heaven...

either way i hope it turns out entertaining.
  • GreatBigLion
I have to agree with every other commentor and say that this is extremely stunning in terms of visuals. And to reinforce Carlton Hackett's comment, THIS DOES NOT GIVE THE ENDING AWAY. If you're getting that impression from putting the pieces together, then I have to say you're going to be surprised once you see it. It's a very difficult story to adapt to film, and it seems like they took the "rape" out of "rapes and murdered" to lighten the material. I can't wait to see how they candle the unconventional ending.
  • wazuu
Visual were awesome, loved the rose under the ice glaciers. The story hasn't convinced me though, I'll have to wait and see.
