notscreened

Paramount Pictures has decided to not invite critics to the nationwide screenings of G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, in what one might suspect is an attempt to quash bad reviews. A very targeted select group of online outlets were chosen to screen the film (were any women invited?), and the buzz coming out of their reports has been surprising - the movie isn’t horrible, it might even be a little fun. So why isn’t Paramount screening GI Joe to press if the few critics that did see the film enjoyed it? It’s a question that has been the subject of conversation in the movie geek circles on Twitter last week.

But the bigger question is… does not screening a film for critics mean that a movie is bad? In today’s by the numbers, I take a look at the films released over the last year that were not screened for critics. And by not screened, I should clarify — I mean outside of NY/LA junket screenings.

The graph above shows the 16 films from the last 12 months that weren’t screened for critics nationwide. Click on the image to enlarge.

  • The Collector 32%
  • Obsessed 19%
  • Crank: High Voltage 62%
  • 12 Rounds 29%
  • Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li 4%
  • Madea Goes To Jail 28%
  • Underworld: Rise of the Lycans 32%
  • The Haunting of Molly Hartley 3%
  • SAW V 15%
  • An American Carol 13%
  • Fireproof 37%
  • My Best Friend’s Girl 15%
  • Tyler Perry’s The Family that Preys 51%
  • Disaster Movie 2%
  • Bangkok Dangerous 9%
  • Mirrors 15%

Of the 16 films, only one has a certified “fresh” rating from Rotten Tomatoes (Crank 2: High Voltage with a 62%). The 16 films together (including Crank 2) have an average Rotten Tomatoes rating of 22.9%. If Crank 2 proves anything, it proves that a decent movie can slip through the cracks when a studio’s marketing department lack’s faith or marketing budget.

GI Joe: The Rise of Cobra certainly doesn’t lack finances. According to a recent LA Times article, the film had a production budget of $175 million, and Paramount is expected to spend $150 million in marketing and distribution expenses. In fact, Paramount is still holding the usual word of mouth “advance screenings” in most of the major cities around the country. For those who don’t know, these are the screenings that regional press and critics are normally invited to. Press just wasn’t invited this time around.

Some lower budget horror films don’t hold any word of mouth screenings, possibly because it would be too cost prohibitive. In that instance, it doesn’t make any sense to screen a movie for critics, as it would be too costly to set-up screenings in all the major cities across the country. Plus, lets be honest: for the most part, critic attendance at the lower budget horror films is minimal (at least from what I can tell in San Francisco). But if a studio believes they have something good, like The Descent, they will promote and screen the film to critics.

And even if the film was a clunker, it isn’t like the bad buzz fuming out of critic reviews is going to hurt the film. For a recent example of this, look back at Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, which was slammed hard by most critics, very possibly ending up as the worst reviewed biggest box office success of all time. Remember that old saying, “There is no such thing as bad publicity?” Well it very much applies to these big budget event films.

In fact, I was unable to find a history of huge budget films not being screened for the press. The only possible example I could find was the 1995 film Waterworld (I’m sure there might be other examples I’m missing, if so, leave them in the comments). Usually when a film costs more than $100 million, studios screen it because they know - any publicity is good publicity.

While critics serve to help smaller budget and independent films, their positive or negative opinions don’t seem to help hurt bigger budget releases. But the reviews do function as a form of publicity (”hey look, Transformers 2 is coming out this weekend”) which helps add to the event release. Do you know how much a strip in the New York Times would cost the studio if they wanted advertise in the same space where a movie review would run? A lot. Reviews are basically free advertising for these bigger films.

I could argue for or against the value of movie reviews all day, but that isn’t what this article is about. The question is: why isn’t Paramount screening GI Joe to nationwide critics? They weren’t afraid to screen Transformers 2, and we all know how that one turned out. So what are they afraid of this time around?

A very special thanks to Rotten Tomatoes’ Critical Consensus column, which was a valuable resource for discovering which films were not screened to the national press.

Update: /Film reader Ian F decided to do some extra work and add box office gross to the graph, in an effort to see if not being screened for critics hurt or helped these films. I would argue that you would need to see a comparison between comparable reviewed films that were screened for press to get an accurate read out. But who has the time to put together such a report? Not me. Here are Ian’s findings:

Lol, admit it, everyone thinks it when they see that title.

"The question is: why isn’t Paramount screening GI Joe to nationwide critics? They weren’t afraid to screen Transformers 2, and we all know how that one turned out. So what are they afraid of this time around?"

They've finally realised mainstream critics have become irrelevant
  • They are just trying to make sure people hang on to what they love about GI Joe. they do not want peoples minds to be made up about the movie before they even see it.
  • Henrik
Who gave Disastor Movie a good review?
  • Birch
One guy. He said much of it was "undeniably funny." I think not...
  • mbellerbrock
I was legitimately surprised to see that GI Joe's early RT reviews aren't all that bad, it's at 8/10 right now... I may be regretting my statement that I'd eat my shirt if it stayed above 40%.
  • samboni
    Did you read the article?
  • mbellerbrock
Nah man I just randomly click on articles, scroll to the bottom and comment on whatever's on my mind at the moment....

Yes I understand they're trying to screen critics and get only people who might like it to review it. But I'm still surprised that it's now at a 10/11, obviously this will surely drop, but a 91% says something at least. The fact that there are 10 RT critics that liked it alone says something. I should have been more specific in stressing the "*may* be regretting statement."

Despite all that, my comment still could have been perfectly valid, I could have been stating my surprise, and in a way acknowledging Peter's attempt (no offense to him, I think it's accurate) at an explanation.
  • While Transformers 2 had a built-in audience due to the success of the first film, GI Joe has people (like me) waiting for some positive word-of-mouth or reviews before they'll even consider seeing it. I don't think it's a valid comparison.
  • okay, good point. But it isn't the only example. There are countless films not with built in audiences, which got slammed by critics, yet still made tons of bank at the box office... I only used Transformers 2 because its the highest example of bad reviews/big money, its the same studio that is releasing GI Joe, and its recent (same summer)

How the hell did Crank 2 get such a high rating? That's one of the worst movies I've seen in the past year. Did the critics really like the scene where Statham has wild sex with his girlfriend on a horse track, or what?
  • it's actually rated 2% higher than the original crank, which had a similar scene. get a sense of humor, both cranks are ridiculous fun.
  • quintushalls
I agree with Sean. I wouldn't exactly compare it to "The Godfather", but I like campy films. And that film, was the best kind of a campy adrenaline thrill ride.
  • eh. 62% does seem a bit high to me. i understand the appeal of the films but I thought everything in Crank 2 started getting old pretty early on. just because you are running around and do crazy shit doesn't mean the movie has energy. i got bored with it. plus, the directors seem like douchebags.
  • existenz
Aliens in the Attic is the most recent film that wasn't shown to critics. I think it has a 24% on Rotten Tomatoes now, about in line with the average.
  • Rick Gershman
Yeah, loving the spelling Bangcock spelling on Bangkok Dangerous. Now that's the Freudian slip of all Freudian slips.

I think we're using the term "critics" very loosely here. Paramount invited only the critics they considered most likely to give positive reviews, and I wouldn't be shocked in the slightest if more than a few of them were promised something in return for showing some love (future exclusive invites, etc.).

By his own admission, Harry Knowles has pulled some seriously underhanded shit in the past, such as logging on under a number of different screen names to provide similar "rave reviews" for movies he wanted to see do well. That's not criticism. That's a load of horseshit.

Look, I'm not saying every one of those early so-called critics sold his soul to give G.I. Joe a thumbs-up. I imagine at least a couple of them actually liked it to some degree. But this whole matter is HIGHLY suspect. And it's not a great leap to assume these guys love seeing their names and quotes used in national ad campaigns.

I like generally Faraci from C.H.U.D. (and yeah, I know he was positive on Joe), but you think he didn't sport wood every time his "best Harry Potter film yet" showed up on a prime time ad?
  • Roland21
    C.H.U.D. is a joke.
  • Rick Gershman
I'm not exactly disagreeing, but in comparison to the rampant lowlife fanboy whoredom that is AICN, C.H.U.D. is at least preferable, IMHO.
  • Anrkist
C.H.U.D. doesn't allow comments or even forum registration... well, I've tried several times and am never allowed in. I think that stinks. I'm thinking of removing them from my RSS feed altogether. Most of the stories are almost a mirror of what's here, without the blinding green text. It's really hard to get through more than a few paragraphs without my eyes watering. *should review that site*

I was at a (German) press screening for G.I. Joe yesterday and thought it was a pretty entertaining action flick. Way better than Transformers 2 imho. I don't get why they won't screen it for critics.
  • Craigasorusrex
My guess is that the Paramount is aware of the bad buzz that was generated somewhat prematurely by a snowball of hate that turned into an avalanche based on "negative" screenings from anonymous sources that could have easily been fake.

Along with the gigantic backlash towards the trailer and some of the character designs. Oh and the rumors of Sommers completely messing up and having multiple editors fix the film and his ousting from post-production which was severely denied by the producer.

The last thing Paramounts needs now is critics giving this film the final blow even though this might genuinely be better than TF:ROTF which isn't saying much.
  • Crank: High Voltage, had a really nice advert on break.com where everything would crack around that.
  • Nerfdude
GI Joe looks like spandex wrapped CGI clown shit.

What does everyone think of this statement from a Paramount exec?

"`G.I. Joe' is a big, fun, summer event movie - one that we've seen audiences enjoy everywhere from Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland to Phoenix, Ariz.," said Rob Moore, vice chairman of Paramount Pictures. "After the chasm we experienced with `Transformers 2' between the response of audiences and critics, we chose to forgo opening-day print and broadcast reviews as a strategy to promote `G.I. Joe.' We want audiences to define this film."
  • Duder NME
Sounds like that exec is trying to quantify how much bullshit per word can be contained in a press release. Somebody call Guinness.
  • spideysensestingling
I love how you spell Bangkok!

well next year Paramounts will have more trouble with The Last Airbender you wait and see the situation with that movie when it comes out
  • Craigasorusrex
Because of a fringe group that are calling "racism"?

Please that won't do a thing. The teaser trailer was relatively well received across sites and blogs despite of the call of foul play by a group of lunatic fans because an Asian kid wasn't casted as Aang instead (even thought the show never mentions race they are all divided by nations).

If you think the "racebenders" will make a dent in BO earnings you are sadly mistaken.
  • Guest
the characters was based on a asians anyway Dao Le Animation Editor who worked on the show said the characters were even modeled after Asian members of the crew. plus do u need the show to tell you that the character race the first place to comfirm if his asian freaking hell LOTR was based on european culutre and everyone in the movie is white even LOTR did not mention race too.

anyway the casting was "racist" the way they had the open casting call was a load of BS. Caucasian and any other Ethnic was that all about Caucasian is another Ethnic too why didnt they say all Ethnic for the role. plus how comes they have a casting call for all the lead roles but they still end up getting hollywood actors.

    oh heres something else
    - Sifu Kisu fighting instructor and consultant for the show even support Racebending and he dont agree with the casting

    - Siu-Leung Lee who was the cultural consultant for Avatar: The Last Airbender was shocked about the casting and his not pleased that the movie has cut out Chinese calligraphy and been replaced with a gibberish language and his not participating in the movie at all.

    - someone on IMDB posted a pic of himself wearing a t-shirt saying Caucasian and any other Ethnic at comic-con next to the creators of the show Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko the person whos wearing the shirt is part of Racebender

these guys are more organised then DB movie protest.

maybe the movie wont do a dent at the BO but it already has bad situation with the casting and changing everything that made the show great.
  • anyone going to the chicago comic-con 2009 august 6th through 9?
  • AKSchampion
Snakes on a Plane wasn't screened for critics. Might not be a "big budget summer movie", but it had a pretty tremendous hype.
  • Nice Guy Dave
Peter, if you're going to present the RT ratings as meaning something, then you need to give us a baseline. What, for example, is the average rating of a film this year? Last year? The average for all films screened to critics?

Then we'll know what we're looking at.

    Cheers
    Dave
  • raymondpecoskie
The graph really ought to compare with BO results to - films that had reviews in the same ballpark that did screen. Does no press screening increase opening weekend revenue?
  • I really don't care what the critics think! they're wrong 70% of the time! The first Hulk wasn't bad and they said it was!
  • cutewinslate
I am a big fan of Nicolus Cage but this time he has disappointed with the Crank high voltage ...it's a flop movie
  • In France, most of Luc Besson's productions are not screened to the critics.
And yet, they seem to work quite well.
  • danielmabuse
"While critics serve to help smaller budget and independent films, their positive or negative opinions don’t seem to help hurt bigger budget releases." I wonder how you reach that conclusion? Its an interesting question (whether critics help or hurt), but I don't see an obvious way of answering it.
  • v
    Tyler Perry is kicking butt!!!!!!!
  • Report on this year's cold opens. There should be sub-categories here for niche films like "Fireproof" (one of the most profitable films of 2009) and "An American Carol," low-budget horror or game-based films, and Tyler Perry, who is in a class by himself. It is interesting that "GI Joe" may be the biggest-budget film since "Waterworld" not to screen for critics. And while we're on the subject, I thought "Aliens in the Attic," which was not shown to critics, was not as bad as "G-Force," which was.
