Even though the presence of talented actors Vera Farmiga and Peter Sarsgaard was quizzical, the trailers for Orphan did little to convince that the movie was anything but a derivative, un-PC rip-off of The Bad Seed and Mac Culkin’s The Good Son. Producer Joel Silver (as well as Leonardo DiCaprio) seemed to be aiming for a quiet ground-double between pricey blockbusters. Pay no mind. Business as usual. But over the last two weeks, the oft-profane buzz around Orphan on Twitter and elsewhere, alongside a surprising 7.1 rating on IMDB, and enthusiastic genre reviews, now suggest the makings of a cult horror flick. Word-of-mouth about the ending and my kooky, inexplicable obsession with the movie’s titular character, Esther, finally lead me to check it out. It was worth it.

Orphan is predictable and side-steps plot-holes a plenty with an unapologetic curtsy, but the winter settings, traditional pacing, and crisp cinematography by Jeff Cutter (the new A Nightmare on Elm Street) are surprisingly well done. Of course, what really has people talking is the performance by 12-year-old new-comer Isabelle Fuhrman as Esther. Without spoiling anything, Fuhrman’s eloquent, learned Russian accent and ruthless, economical capability for murder had me imagining a face-off with Viggo Mortensen’s tatted thug in Eastern Promises. She does not play around. And her handling of a box-cutter at one point seems eerily adorable precocious.

The performance is enhanced because Esther is not Satan-incarnate a la The Omen or cursed with supernatural abilities (cue bad CGI). Moreover, the murky presentation of the character’s past is effectively haunting and fun, and keeps your mind spinning post-credits. I think that once the film hits DVD—it’s grossed a tidy $27m in two weeks—there should be enough interest to consider making a prequel. At the very least, I would expect a couple of straight-to-DVD cheapos featuring another child actress. And one or four nubile crazies out as Esther for Halloween. Given, Orphan is nothing new or special—in a way though, the familarity of the beats is charming—but with time Esther might be appointed a lower-tier horror icon, several notches above Angela in Sleepaway Camp. Sort of hilarious. If you’ve seen the film, what do you think about the buzz and the film’s big twist?

    No
  • no to orphans!
    yes!
  • fartsmcgee
I'm just going to take your word for it and leave it at that.
  • Brian
    i liked it.
  • akabob
I saw it & liked it. Esther is ruthless and, while I was never laughing at the movie, it is nutty & ultimately over the top. I wouldn't be surprised if we see Esther again.
  • wrongturn687
I agree, but I don't really think you can call it a cult classic. Maybe I'm wrong about this, but aren't cult classics movies that didn't make any money at the B.O, but picked a big fanbase on dvd. Orphan is expected to gross as much as $40mill at the B.O, so you can't say it's not making money because WOM is deffentially driving that movie. I think it will be more of of just a classic horror movie that people will deffentially remember in the next 10 years and will continue to constantly watch. I really digged the movie and while it ain't perfect I bet it will blow past most people's expectations because the trailers were horrible and nobody really expected it to be good. I was very much one of those people.
  • L_Ron_Jeffard
After seeing it, I thought it should've been called Max vs. The Orphan. That deaf girl was awesome.
  • yes she was.
  • Loved the film. It helped me wash the bad taste out of my mouth left from Friday the 13th (2009).

I will be seeing it again before it leaves theaters.

Isabelle Fuhrman was great. Loved her performance.
  • Swarley
I went to see this with a bunch of friends on a whim one night and was actually pleasantly surprised by how NOT horrible it was. I think, for a horror flick, it was actually really well done and I LOVED the ending.

*SPOILERS THIS PARAGRAPH* I was expecting some supernatural twist, but the actual explanation for Esther being how she is was at least *relatively* believable and was a great way to avoid using bad CGI. And once you knew what the secret was, Fuhrman did a great job at making me believe she was actually much older.

The acting in this was actually really well done by everyone. I can't decide if the other child actors or Farmiga as the mother did a better job. All the characters were unique and brought an interesting perspective to the situation. I definitely enjoyed it enough to try and convince other people to go see it, even if it's after it comes out on DVD.

Although, I think everyone in the theater started laughing when Sarsgaard started to cry when confiding in Esther. That part was pretty awkward and unconvincing. Also, I was half expecting the necklace/bracelets element to be some weird version of that scary campfire story about the woman who always wore a ribbon around her neck, and when someone removed it her head fell off. Let's just say I'm glad it wasn't.
  • Fir3Wolf
I actually saw this movie myself and just like most of you here, I myself really enjoyed it. She is a dark character and one I would like to see again. I do believe this movie will find a cult following, but perhaps once it hits DVD it will actually find a bigger audience.
  • Finally some love! I read about the twist in an article on Slate.com - shame on you Slate for no spoiler warnings - and had to drag everyone I knew to see it just for their reactions. In addition to their awesome reactions I was pleasantly surprised by how effective the movie was. I was a much better time than crap like Transformers 2.
  • Refuse to See Orphan
My friend is an orphan. She thinks the movie portrays orphans in a negative light. I suggest that no one see the movie. Do it for my friend and the many other orphans around the world who are normal people like you and me. Think about what that must be like to be an orphan. Show compassion and love for others. Adoption is a blessing.
  • L_Ron_Jeffard
    *SPOILERS*

I completely disagree. I thought portraying orphans as mentally disturbed homicidal prostitutes from Estonia was eerily accurate. In fact, I thought it hit a little too close to home.
  • Oh geez your statement is just ridiculous. This movie isnt some political statement about adoption. Its a freaking thriller movie for crying out loud.
  • CheshireAna
The movie is NOT a statement against orphans and adoption. It's a horror film about a disturbed, homicidal individual. The end.
  • I agree, and furthermore I refuse to see any Friday the 13th movie as they are an appalling slap in the face to physically deformed giants everywhere. The opening moments of John Carpenter's Halloween portrayed pre-pubescent WASPs in such a negative light that I had to turn it off. Don't get me started on George Romero's ceaseless hate campaign against dead people in his zombie films, I have been friends with many dead people and they do not behave in the way Romero portrays them. It's disgusting how the horror genre portrays people.
  • Merciful_budah
I can see where your friend is coming from, but I think Andrew Shaw puts it into perspective. Part of what made this effective on the Horror level is that it makes one uncomfortable with a noble, seemingly innocent, concept like adoption. If someone watches this and doesn't want to adopt as a result, then they probably don't have the chops to be a good parent anyway.

It's articles like this that make me question how this site has actually gotten any "Best Film Blog" awards.
  • Itri12
Wow can you be anymore pretentious?
  • Matthew
Sure, but that has nothing to do it. It's not my fault that "Secret Midget Hooker" is one of the most retarded endings of all time.
  • PJthaBear
    i agree
  • Itri12
But what you're saying is people can't have different opinions and since one person from the site liked one okay to mediocre movie, that /film didn't deserve any awards. They got awards because the writing is great and the news is always put out fast and with plenty of interesting original articles. I don't understand how someone's film tastes have anything to do with winning "Best Film Blog" awards.
  • Ralphy
I know right It's a shame we can't go to your well regarded award winning site
  • Matthew
I never said I had one. That doesn't mean that this article isn't stupid, however.
  • Itri12
Once again, you are putting your own personal feelings about the film out and mixing it with how well the article is written and whether it's interesting.
  • I might need to reconsder this flick. The trailers allude to supernatural evil, and I just wasn't interested. If it's a modern 'Bad Seed' that could be really interesting (beat someone to death with a tap shoe)!

That and my friend produced the end credit sequence!
  • both i and my friend were pleasantly suprised walking out of this film. I wasnt looking forward to it at all but really enjoyed it. The twist was out of nowhere but made the events of the movie make sense. I would recommend you go see it.
  • immature
I'm glad people are liking this superb film.
  • I really liked it too. Just because it was so over the top. I was laughing about half the time. And not in a bad way, in an 'oooooh my god way'. It was weirdly captivating despite its predictability, until the twist of course.

Spoiler-y: When Peter Sarsgaard sees the paintings towards the end? Holyyy shit. My friend and I were just like, 'what is happening?!!'

I'm not saying it's totally golden or original or anything. But it's on the better side of horror movies this year..or in the past few years..
  • MattFini
Great film! Literally the best horror film since 2007's The Mist.

Fantastic performances, great suspense and a fun little twist.

    I loved it.
  • the creepy paintings and the XXX images were awesome!
  • avantguardian
I photoshopped up a funny interpretation of the twist on the poster, splicing with a certain other film...

  • All hail Esther, the Queen of the Orphans!!
  • aidenvfx
Loved it for what it is. After so many pg-13 movies or lets show you how much fake blood we can waste in 1 movie comes a back to basics great horror/thriller.

As for the Isabelle Fuhrman I hope I am not the only one hoping she will be cast in the "Let the right one in" remake.
  • I thought that Isabelle Fuhrman's performance was chilling. She is one of the most cold-blooded killers I have ever seen on the big screen. She constantly put her new siblings in deadly situations without a shred of hesitation. She was also a master of psychological torment (refer to the "do something nice for mommy" roses scene). What makes her so dangerous is that you would never see it coming. She appears to be so sweet and innocent. Boy, you would be so wrong.

The way she stabbed a key character over and over again near the end was brutal. And nearly finishing one character off twice with the fearlessness of a professional hitman was something to see. This girl was a terror! I think she will go down as a new horror icon and it's mainly due to the performance of one Isabelle Fuhrman. I had alot of fun watching this movie.

SECRET DWARF INSANE HOOKER, THAT'S THE TWIST LOLLLLLLLLLL
  • Ian
I liked it...but DRAG ME TO HELL shits on this movie
  • Merciful_budah
Absolutely true. If Sam hadn't made his triumphant return to horror this year though, Orphan probably would have been the best Horror flick of the year. Second best to Sam Raimi is nothing to balk at though.
  • Rabstown
Thank you for talking about this Hunter. I LOVED Orphan. It was so intense, so brutal, so fucked up and so entertaining. What a great horror/thriller. I'm glad it's getting some love on /film.
  • Danos
I haven't seen it. Colleagues of mine have and said the it is quite good. And the twist is a good one.
  • hisensei808
While I LOVED the film, I don't think there should be a prequel, nor a sequel. But, knowing producers, there is always that chance of it happening.

I enjoyed it solely because of the acting of Fuhrman. I was very impressed by her performance (and well the twist at the end is what made it a worthwhile stay).
  • Brian
I've been thinking about a prequel all day.
  • Merciful_budah
I definitely was going to skip this based on the trailers. Then I read a really positive review and figured I'd give it a chance. HOLY SHIT! This was not only an enjoyable horror film, it was actually VERY original on a lot of levels (excepting of course the concept of the evil child killing people). I think what serves it the best is that the twist is very grounded and uncomplicated. So much so that you never even consider it the first time through the movie, or if you do, you dismiss it as too easy an explanation.

I'm certain there will be a prequel and/or sequels and I'm also certain that they will be crap with no one involved from the Original. So it goes...

Here's hoping Isabelle Fuhrman has a lucrative career ahead of her. After this, she certainly deserves it.
  • Private_Hudson
The only thing that spoiled my enjoyment of 'Orphan' was the unrelentingly know-it-all butthole attitude of the father, I actually applauded when......

(SPOILER) Esther slashed him up (END OF SPOILER)

Otherwise it's a decent enough mainstream effort....(--_--)
  • lelandbrungardt
THE ROOM and PLAN 9 are cult films. ORPHAN is just a pretty mediocre horror film with a ridiculous twist ending.
  • Brian
I think it's the best horror film of the year.
