futurama cast

Update: Hitfix is reporting that John Dimaggio and Billy West haven’t signed yet, but they’re close. As probably the most iconic of the voices, perhaps they’re trying to work out a slightly better deal?

While many of us were prepping to tackle Comic-Con a few weeks ago, news broke that Fox was planning to recast the main actors for Futurama’s return to television next year. Unsurprisingly, the issue revolved around the actor’s pay. The news cast a shadow over the Futurama panel at Comic-Con, where none of the cast were present even though they were readily available at the con. Today, we can all breathe a collective sigh of relief: The Toronto Star is reporting that all of the cast members are back on board with new contracts.

Many figured that this pay dispute could have merely been an underhanded way for Fox to generate more publicity for the show, but then again Fox has a way of making incredibly stupid decisions when it comes to amazing television properties. I honestly couldn’t have imagined Futurama without the original cast. After all, they had a hard enough time maintaining their former level of quality with the DVD films. Replacing the cast would have made me give up on the new Futurama episodes altogether.

The new cast contracts seem like a decent compromise; the actors are getting less than they initially wanted, but more than Fox was offering at the start. Creators Matt Groening and David X. Cohen issued the following statement to the Star:

We are thrilled to have our incredible cast back. The call has already gone out to the animators to put the mouths back on the characters.

With this news, I have high hopes for Futurama’s reentry to television. I think many of the DVD films suffered from trying to craft a coherent story within four episodes (the films were split up as individual eps for TV), and I’m glad that the writers will be able to return to the format they know best.

Discuss: Would you have watched Futurama without the original cast? Are there any worries you have about Futurama’s return to television on Comedy Central?

Glad it came down to them striking a deal.

Futurama without the voice actors would be pointless to revive.

Great to know that they ended up coming to an agreement.
  • Sketch
I agree. That's like trying to watch Aladdin 2 with Dan instead of Robin as the Genie. And that was just ONE main character.
  • Anrkist
It would have been like watching Aladdin, if you want to get technical. In fact, never compare a Disney film to Futurama... please.

    I don't understand Futurama's mass appeal.

I tried watching the first few episodes but couldn't get into it. Didn't find too many of the jokes even slightly funny.
  • I understand what you mean, but if you get later into the first season and definitely by the second season, you will find the appeal of Futurama.
  • thrillhouse
Really? Because I thought the strongest episodes are in the first half of the series.
  • Who Ha
I disagree. The later episodes were especially brilliant because there wasn't a need for generic character development anymore. "The Devil's Hands Are Idle Playthings" and "Jurassic Bark" are so resonant because viewers have gotten to know the characters so much already that they've actually felt the emotions they went through. Not many (animated) shows can claim that.
  • thrillhouse
Okay, I agree with that. Those episodes are among my favorites. I still think the first couple seasons have the funnier episodes, as far as pure laughs go. Then again, the five funniest episodes IMO, of course, are:

    1. Love's Labours Lost in Space
    2. Fry and the Slurm Factory
    3. War Is the H-Word
    4. I, Roommate
    5. Amazon Women in the Mood

    But that's just me.
  • I would try giving a few more eps a chance. You really don't even have to watch it in order (though it does help). It has a very smart/peculiar/geeky sense of humor, so if you're into science, math, or sci-fi you'll find a lot to love.

the very thought of replacing them was ridiculous

score devindra, this is great news

Yay! I agree with everyone else, This would have been a disaster of epic proportions if they had been recast.
I for one can't wait. Glad to have the nerdiest TV show ever back on the air.
I hope Al Gore is in the first episode back.
  • quintushalls
Al Gore: If we don't go back there and make that event happen, the entire universe will be destroyed... And as an environmentalist, I'm against that.
  • Bree_zy
There would have been no point of bringing back Futurama if they didn't have the original cast. Thank gawd FOX took a smart pill to do the right thing.
  • quintushalls
Good news, everyone! I have invented a machine to keep our voices exactly the same.

    Thank Yivo!
  • Someone already beat me to it, but what the hell, it's appropriate.
GOOD NEWS, EVERYONE! This is awesome. Futurama is one of my favorite shows of all time, I couldn't even imagine someone else trying to do their best impression of Billy West. I went to the Futurama signing just last week at SDCC, and they are the nicest group of people you could ever meet. Glad to know that Fox has (maybe) understood how important they are.

Dollhouse was renewed. The Futurama voices are back. The world is topsy turvy. Dogs and cats living together.
Thank you, Fox. (NEVER thought I'd say that!)
  • luke_a
And all is right with the world.
  • The Great Cambino
Those asinine morons who fired them were themselves fired for incompetence! And not just fired, but beaten up, too. And pretty badly. In fact, most of 'em died...

I never once thought this wasn't going to happen...I knew someone on either side would cave.

I love this show and its great news its coming back but really all I need is bender. they could even have just made a new show called the amazing adventures of bender and I would have still watched it
  • starscream9289
This is great news! I can't for thiALL GLORY TO THE HYPNOTOAD
  • th3
    how about dani d vito
  • I may have watched it out of curiosity, but whatever the final product ended up looking like without the original cast, it wouldn't have been Futurama.
  • mangos
no doubt there'll be an episode playing off this.
  • Kman
This is good news. When Futurama came out it took all the humor that made the Simpsons good with it. Now the void can be filled again.
  • It would be awesome as a joke if for the first part of the episode the characters had different voices. ;)
  • krackajap
    Good news everyone!

can someone post a link to a bigger version of the pic used for this article?

Gary Gygax (D&D), Stephen Hawking, Al Gore and Nichelle Nichols (Uhura) in a single episode was pure fucking genius. I love Futurama!
  • Andy III
Let's all remember this for the next time this kind of normal negotiating shenanigans happens, ok everybody?

Fox threatens to recast The Simpsons...nerds everywhere pop a motherboard, go nuts with Caps Lock. Then, everyone reaches a deal and The Simpsons is booked through when the sun goes supernova.

Fox threatens to recast Futurama...nerds everywhere threaten to douse themselves with gasonline and set themselves ablaze. Then, everyone reaches a deal and Futurama will be back before you know it, trying to figure out ways to use Stephen Hawking.

The take away here is that this is all just normal parts of the negotiation process. So keep calm and carry on next time. The people making these things are nowhere near as stupid as reactionary websites think they are.

I graduated with Billy West (Werstein) from high school. He one of the best voice actors (not 'Hollywood' crossover wannabes) alive today. Couldn't imagine the show without the original voice actors. Wouldn't watch the show without them all.

FYI - Bill is also a PHENOMENAL musician, guitarist extraordinaire and any other instrument he ever touched!!! Plus he's a really good guy.

I would not watch Futurama without the original cast, it would be utter garbage. I think Comedy Central will do a good job.

I'm not sure that I would have watched with a new voice cast but I have no worries about the episodes returning. The problem with the DVDs wat that they were being forced to make something 2 hours long that could also be split up into 4 individual episodes. That resulted in a disjointed story that seemed to drag. Once they get back to standard 30 minute blocks they'll be fine.
