Ridley Scott To Direct Alien Prequel

alien

In May, it was revealed that commercial director Carl Erik Rinsch was attached to direct a remake of Alien. We have since learned that it is more of a prequel than a remake. I was one of the few people actually interested in Rinsch’s involvement. Rinsch’s commercials show an amazing sense of imagination, visual effects artistry and composition (we’ve profiled his amazing commercials on the site). But apparently 20th Century Fox wasn’t happy with the Scott’s choice of director, holding out for the original helmer — Ridley Scott.

At the time I believed that would never happen. Why would Scott return to film a prequel of one of the most popular sci-fi film franchises of all time? Why compete with yourself? Producing the film seems like a much safer bet. Who knows why, but Ridley Scott has signed on to direct a prequel to Alien.

The film will be a direct prequel to Scott’s original 1979 film. In a 2002 interview, Scott wanted to return “to where the alien creatures were first found and explain how they were created.” Chances are this idea would also be incorporated into the reboot. Jon Spaihts will write the screenplay, a job he earned after pitching the studio and production company Scott Free. Spaihts has no produced credits, but has written Shadow 19 and Passengers, both of which are also sci-fi space thrillers.

Strangely, I feel a lot different about this project now that Scott is at the helm. Not only is Scott experienced, but he has done this before. So why is it that I feel less comfortable with Scott at the helm than an experienced commercial director? Maybe it is fear that Scott won’t be able to create something better than the original. Maybe it is fear that the film will be too much like the original, and I would have liked to see a completely different take. And maybe it is that I just don’t understand the idea of a filmmaker returning 30 years later to film a reboot.

And maybe it is that I fear that a Body of Lies-era Ridley Scott won’t produce anything close to the level of the original feature. I don’t think I’d ever want to see Martin Scorsese to film a prequel/reboot of Goodfellas. I expect a lot of the /Film commenters will disagree… so please explain to me why I should be excited about this.

Discuss: What are your thoughts on Ridley Scott returning to direct a Alien prequel/reboot?

  • I have been saying for years that a return to roots for the Alien franchise is exactly what the doctor ordered. There is so much story potential there, it is ridiculous. And, now, we finally — FINALLY — get what all fans wanted, which was to have Ridley Scott direct the thing. Could it be that FOX, the company that has made bone-headed marketing moves the norm, has actually done something right? Hell hath officially frozen over.

What if James Cameron and Ridley Scott teamed up to do the prst grequel in new state of the art 'Avatar' 3D???

    Highest grossing film ever anyone?
  • RJ
Those two together - Won't happen. Shouldn't happen.
Too much ego on the same project = trouble.
...but i think it's pretty safe to say there's going to be a 3D version.

Oh for God's sake! What is wrong with a prequel? If the script/screenplay is constructed to a high standard and you have a man like Ridley Scott at the helm, why don't you, yes you as fans/critics whatever you want to call yourselves, let the dream be? If a talented man has a vision, I want to see it!
I understand that there have been many let downs in the past in regards to remakes, prequels and sequels, but I'm sure Mr Scott won't let us down...
If Fox had put Boll or Anderson at the helm, I would have personally taken the argument to Government, but no, we have the original director back in his seat. Give the man a chance and lets see where the nastly little critters came from...

Alien is my personal favorite sci-fi thriller of all time... I thought all of them were good, of course the best one being scott´s... but aliens was amazing, alien 3 was very dark and unsettling, and jean pierre jeunet did some of the coolest visual imaginery of the last decade with resurrection... So just to have a prequel of this great franchise is a good thing in my book, but also to have a mature Ridley Scott doing it is just great... it´s too bad they made alien vs predator, coz it took away that feeling of nihilism and existentialism, and that sort of depressive philosophy that made it so cool and fascinating, and turned it into a piece of shit... I think it´s great that they are trying to make it serious again, I CANNOT WAIT TO SEE THIS MOVIE...

People are worried about a new alien. Because they think it will remove the mystery of where the creatures came from. I would say the mystery of the creatures has been progressively flattened by each proceeding film. 'Aliens' was a great action film however. But could not be more different in tone from the original. Which retained and imbued a sense of the serene, and eerily tranquil. It had a sterile eloquence, and favored an alluring build up into the 'unknown'. without resorting to cheap bombastic measures. So that when the creature finally arrived amongst this it became the most horrific and uncomfortable things to deal with. Claustrophobic. and mysterious. So then the mystery aspect can be had again in actuality by regressing into a place we have not seen. This alien world. and the world inhabited by the fossilized 'pilot. We would hopefully see things we have no idea about. Because we will not be surprised by simply the alien we know. There is no shock value or surprise there. But they can knowingly play upon our preconceptions, and our placid ambivalence / 'complacency' with the creature, if they play their cards right. On an artistic note. Ridley Scotts alien film is wonderfully made and directed. Crucially he knows and has a consistent pallet with his lighting. I noticed this over the years. But everywhere he shoots looks like 'His' world. For this film the utterly important addition, 'should' be H R Giger. Ever since the first film Giger has been 'sort' of included here and there. Now for me, i know and understand what made the first film work, and indeed become a success. and here it is. the 'whole' Alien success is down to 50% Giger, and the rest is Dan O Bannon, and Scott, and a few others on the side. Of course a Giger creation can be modified and copied, so an Alien looking film can be made without him. But with Giger included I feel there will be an outpouring of true artistic splendor the like of which are barley seen or felt these days. The 'Artist' quota on this should be high. If Beksinski were alive, he too would have made an amazing addition. Lets not forget Chris Foss's great work as well as mobius. Great illustrators adding to that first Alien film. Todays illustrators tend not to be working in such generous times with regards to 'fantastic' design, and visions being required by publishers. Album cover artist Dan Seagrave, or former musician turned painter Chis Mars may be contemporary exemptions. I just hope that the artistic visual originality is payed some respect in the forthcoming production. I think if it is. They really cannot go wrong.

I totally feel that doing a alien prequel is definatley the way to go. There is alot of unanswered questions that need to be answered. I said shortly after alien 4 (which sucked), that they need to do a alien movie about where they originally came from. And there no one better than the master himself, Ridley Scott, to do it. The first Alien was a materpiece way ahead of it's time. I think I was about 11 when I saw it at our local drive-in theatre, which scared the shit out me. For the prequel we definatly need the same directing style and imagination to do this properly. I have been an Alien fan ever since I saw the original. If this is to be the final instalment, they will have to look at what made the first such a success and go with that forumla and cut down on the special effects and really concentrate on a just more than average story. I think we have been sfxed to death and need more suspence and a thicker plot to call it a masterpiece. Movie makers have certainly lost sight of the fact that the spfx need to match the story line. If not all you have is a real expensive movie with a shitty plot.
This why I say that we need Ridley Scott to do his magic for the prequel. He has done it once he can do it again.
  • robgrizzly
Ridley Scott's a badass. Normally I'd be against the idea. But Alien is HIS. If only he and Cameron could co-direct or something
  • looking forward to district 9 anyone?
  • 2wheelsonly
the biggest problem with the AvP movies was they were made for an audience with the IQ of plankton. No plot, loads of action and ultimately low brow shit for the masses. Alien was obviously a far more intelligent movie with quality acting/directing. If the studio allow Scott to bring his vision to the screen then we might just be in for a sci fi treat. The fact that he's agreed to do it at all has got to be a good sign.
  • philgeer
Boy what an undertaking this would be for Ridley. I must say Alien and Bladerunner were my all time sci fi favorites. I also understand he will be working on a screen version of Brave New World..now that could be something
  • well thank god riddley scott has picked up the raines where cameron left them. maybe just maybe we will see a film that is actually worth seeing instead of that bag of shit avp1 and avp2. who in there right mind would pick up a script like that and decide it was a good idea. i agree with films beiig produced just for the fans but maybe films made for fan purposes should just be left to people with a talent for writing and directing.
  • jwenbrykowski
Why why why? Just leave things as they are. The only thing that would make me happy would be an Alien 5, with Sigourney Weaver, but it almost seems like the time for that has come and gone. Just leave the Alien movies alone!!!!

As long as 'Scrawny Beaver' isn't in it I'll be happy............(O__O)

How do I get casted for this movie? I need a job really bad.

I feel like each of the sequels has been "a completely different take." I, for one, would be only too happy to have another film that was very much like the original. It had atmosphere, elegance, and intrigue - qualities that have been conspicuously absent from (I wager) every single subsequent film. Bring back Giger and the "perfect organism."
  • Jesse
I think Scott feels that he has to save the Alien franchise from the stupid likes of Aliens vs Predator and its sequel. Both he and James Camerson both displayed disgust at those two films. Hopefully this will take the Alien genre in a new direction, one away from AvP.
  • I Can see the hesitation from fans for Ridley Scott to return but i all honesty i think Hollywood is going to do it with Scott or without, i'd rather he were on board just so you know it toes the line of the originals rather than have some hollywood hacks like Platinum Dunes (i know there remakers but someone similar) descicrate it. I'd rather hollywood gave it to Scott this would be like someone else writing the last Harry Potter book (excuse my reference) its not from the same creative mind therefore its bog-crap, Also if Scott gets it wrong he will not miss out on the next hollywood adventure whereas a budding director will lose fans because he made a crap prequel.
  • jasonwilliford
OK, I will agree that the Scott that made Alien, Blade Runner and Legend is probably gone, but he is hands down one of the greatest directors ever. I wish he had directed every alien movie in the franchise (no offense to Cameron). If the new movie feels like a smooth and cohesive prequel to the 1979 movie then that is a good thing. We have seen different takes and not a single one has ever matched the tension, anxiety, atmosphere, and set design that the original movie did.
  • plagueoftruth
I'll agree with that, but that's where Jim Cameron made a very smart decision to craft an entirely different type of picture with 'Aliens.' I will always prefer Scott's original, but 'Aliens' is a masterpiece of it's genre.
  • the bitch is back....
  • nighthawk1
I have mixed feelings about this prequel. Alien is one of my favorite movies of all time. Hopefully, the prequel doesn't turn out to be of bad quality so it won't end up diminishing the original in any way. I trust a capable director like Ridley Scott since he's a veteran of his craft. If anyone is to direct an Alien prequel than he should be the one to do it.
  • freemachine
Well there's this, and the fact that Sam Raimi is returning to reboot Evil Dead. WTF is going on?
  • plagueoftruth
I'm just happy to see Scott return to sci-fi. He created two of the hands-down greatest sci-fi films of all time and hasn't looked back. If he's willing to return to the genre for this film, I'm hoping it is something special.

The big question to me is: is Dan O'Bannon returning?
  • It´s exciting because the first Alien was a great film. So maybe Scott will direct another great film. Could all go horribly horribly wrong, and if I were Scott I´d probably said no.
  • MovieBuff28
The thing I love about Alien is that it wasn't the special effects that made the film but the characters, dialogue, and story. In fact that film could easily be translated to the stage and it would lose nothing. I would Ridley to see Ridley bring that to the prequal.
  • Great News :) !!
  • frelling_cute
Maybe they will get it right this time. So many failed atemps and mistakes starting with the killing of Newt and Hicks. Things only got worse with horrible Alien Vs Predator movies.
If they are going to reboot it, get the write people involved. Ridley is a good start.
  • flintlocke
FYI - Scott isn't "signed on to direct" the prequel, he's "attached to return as director". And yes, there's a fairly substantial difference -- it's safe to assume his return would have to be contingent on a number of factors, including plenty of leverage on script, cast approval, budget, lack of studio interference, etc. Because Fox needs the movie more than Scott needs yet another project on his plate.

In other words, don't hold your breath.
  • george
Depends. I'm sure hollywood is going to ruin this by making it a big budget film. I've always sworn the greatest sci fis are those with small budgets because they have to get extremely creative. But alas, as much as I want this happen, I almost fear the worst....
  • Burton
My original viewing of Alien is a cinematic memory I cherish. I would love to experience that level of thrill again. I hope that Ridley Scott can recreate that.
  • quintushalls
I don't like the new Ridley Scott. I want the old Ridley Scott back!!!
  • jrice73
My apprehensions on this are pretty big. First off, 20th Century Fox is run by a complete douchebag, Tom Rothman. WTF was he doing at the AVATAR panel last week and what was up with all his screaming and posturing while he was at the microphone. Seems to me he was trying to show he had a bigger dick than all the fanboys that showed up for the con I guess. Bottom line--that dude is a serious tool. And next is the fact that 20th has a shaky relationship with Scott. The director's cut of KINGDOM OF HEAVEN is fantastic. The theatrical cut shows that 20th put their dirty hands in and fucked it up. I just don't have good vibes about this relationship and Rothman is going to want control over this sucker somehow, someway which will make this movie almost impossible to bare as it gets made because you know we're going to hear all the fallout coming out of the production, especially on the set.
Now, if God and the rest of the Space Jockeys out there smile on all of us, Scott will get his cut of the film into theatres. And by that I mean a film that has Giger working on it making it insanely terrifying and beautiful all at the same time just like ALIEN. Scott on his DVD commentary for ALIEN, I believe the one prior to the Director's Cut, stated he thought the aliens were bioweapons created by the Space Jockey race and that the ship was a battlewagon transporting said weapons and it crashed on the planetoid (which would go on to be called LV426/Acheron by Cameron in ALIENS). Now if Scott does that story (and you know this is going to be his story, not the screenwriter's), I am in and I am in big time! I write this on my laptop sitting next to my Cinemaquette Alien statue towering nearly 30 inches tall, wishing as a mad collector of everything ALIEN, that this is THE FILM I have wanted since I saw the original in 1979.
  • Mr. Scott, u have my sincere gratitude. I know you'll make this prequel worth it.
  • tweak
How is this going to be done exactly? Wasn't the shipwrecked craft helmed by another alien race itself?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but that weird looking 10 foot tall figure that Tom Skerrit was picking around in it's ribcage sure as hell didn't look human, so how will this be a prequel about the actual Aliens?

Will this be all "Quest for Fire" like? (lol).
  • Saladinho
Huh. It would have to be. But, I can't imagine Fox doing something that could be that mindblowing. Unless, the first 25 minutes or so was all giant aliens and weird untranslated language and then some aliens burst out, and attack some random human/humanoid ship and then the proper film begins...but that still doesn't work if it's about the origin of the aliens. Hmm...
  • JoJo
I knew Peter will find some excuse of not liking this. He fucking hates FOX so he will do anything to make them look crap.
  • bomberman
    looks like you have failed
  • If I hate on any film that Fox produces, please explain why I loved the 25 minutes of Avatar (a fox film) footage shown at Comic-Con (even more so than the rest of the /Film crew)?

Or how about you explain why I was really excited to see what Carl Erik Rinsch would have done with this prequel/reboot? The studio didn't change.... Only the director...

500 Days of Summer was one of my favorite movies of this year, and it was released by Fox. Also, The Wrestler last year. Juno and Sunshine the year before that.

oh wait, your argument has no validity at all. :)

And for the record. I'm not against seeing Scott's prequel. I'll see any film Scott makes, he's earned that. I just would have rather seen Rinsch's prequel instead. Also, the whole exercise of rebooting a series you created 30 years prior seems almost pointless. If you're going to reboot a franchise, get a new potential visionary to create something new and different.
  • Pete Vadelnieks
At least Ridley Scott is making it. Yea it probably will not be as good as the original (especially since it will not be able to top how scary the original is) but at least Scott is doing it and not someone like McG. Hopefully this will come out before the Dead Space movie or else people will say that it's copying Dead Space when its the other way around
  • I look at this way: the franchise has been dicked around to the point that a little more dicking isn't going to hurt. There's nowhere to go but up with this franchise after the AvP movies (Alien Resurrection is a guilty pleasure of mine).

That being said, I don't want a backstory for the aliens or the crashed spaceship. The beauty of the first film was that we were left to use OUR imaginations to fill in the blanks on so many things: the alien, the space jockey, the company, etc.

I don't want a backstory. I just want this franchise to get its teeth back. Scott, with the right story, could do that.
  • YoungZer0
Make it different or not at all.
  • Saladinho
Ridley Scott's not the same person he was 30 years ago. So, it's iffy whether or not his interests, and approach to film these days will translate well with a new Alien. It really all comes down to if Scott believes in the project, or if he just feels obligated somehow...
  • Luke B
Now wait a minute. Didn't James Cameron come up with a prequel Alien story before AVP that he was going to direct and got Ridley involved and excited but then it all got scrapped because they were pissed about AVP? Can we please acknowledge the amazing possibility of not only Ridley directing another Alien movie, but that it may well possibly be from a story developed by James Cameron himself?
  • Itri12
I liked Body of Lies. It wasn't amazing, only good, but I still had fun with it. That being said, this prequel could be a disaster. It's not like Ridley Scott can't do it, like you said he's very talented and has experience, but he has to live up to himself. Only time will tell though.
  • You should be excited because while this prequel will most likely not be as good as the original (why would you expect that from anyone?), it should be tons better than any of the AVP movies and probably better than Alien 3 and Alien Resurrection. Ridley is still a great director, even if some of his movies are better than others. He is capable, and we should be excited about that.
  • Let's hope now that Scott is directing it that it won't suck
  • Rockie
i am not excited but i have to see it

been wanting scott to return to sci-fi for years
