New Avatar Production Photo and Concept Art

avatar empire

The September 2009 issue of Empire Magazine has a new photo from James Cameron’s Avatar. Like every Avatar photo released thus far, it isn’t actually a photo from the film, but a behind the scenes production photo. The new shot features Cameron trying out one of the massive guns in one of the film’s military airships.

With all the reports coming out of Comic-Con, many people might have missed a piece of concept art which was on display at the Acme Archives booth. I snapped a photo with my iPhone, so please excuse the poor quality (the lighting and reflection…etc). Check out the concept art photo after the jump.

This is kind of old news. I've seen this picture somewhere on here before.
  • Rockie
Avatar Day.......why are you so far away

rewatched the abyss and had a blast by the way
  • quintushalls
I like that film. It had boobies.
  • Dog
I see this little picture and I see a lot of JC personality and style in it, like an Aliens deja vu. Look at that thing, that set, it looks real, it looks JC!! see the gun, I'm pretty sure it's built on a M-60 door machine gun like the Aliens guns were built on real guns. Also the camouflage, it looks real and practical like Colonial Marines, instead of some fancy and impractical sci-fi stuff. JC is the man, with those small details and perfectionism he knows how to make credible an otherwordly environment. George Lucas (and many many others) should take notes and stop those crazy green screens and cgi bullshit
  • Mza
Yeah, cos Avatar is going to hardly have any cgi...
  • Dog
Maybe I didn't explain correctly the feeling. It's not the amount of cgi, it's how it is used and integrated with the story, the characters, the miniatures, the camera work, the lighting, the miniatures and every small detail. Most film makers use cgi in dull productions, lacking any emotion or feeling other than bombastic explosions, ubercool robots or hyperfancy starships to make teens wet their pants. But JC knows how to make a correct use of cgi
  • Mza
I see what you mean. Though from the production stills we seen so far my describing feature would be "green".
  • Benny Turd
Dog, you forgot to mention the miniatures.
  • sgtzim
No miniatures in Avatar, I'm afraid. The environment is 100% CG with the odd life-size prop for some shots. But if you're talking about other JC movies, then yes, they've been used amazing well. Some of the stuff in Aliens was just mindblowing at the time and still really holds up today. Particularly the sequence of the Dropship landing and taking off after the APC drives out. Amazing stuff.

That concept art has been online for months.

Cant wait for Avatar, but Fox really seem to be dropping the ball on the marketing campaign. Most people I know haven't even heard of the film, let alone care about seeing it. We are still yet to see even one actual production shot from the film, just these endless behind the scenes photos which always include Cameron in some way. Seems a bit odd for such a big-expensive film that's only 4 months away. I really hope the trailer they release generates some excitement amongst the non-movie geek crowd, because Im really starting to wonder how they are going to make back their 200 million+ budget. (Im in for seeing it twice regardless, I just want it to be successful so Cameron gets right to work on Battle Angel instead of going back into exile!)
  • Whaddya know, it's James looking off-camera again...
  • sgtzim
It's actually a pic of him directing the actors. They're offscreen at the end of the gun barrel.
  • You think? ...
  • sgtzim
I do. I've heard actors often give their best performances at gunpoint.
  • Ha ha nice! :)
  • Avatard
wow. That makes me really want to go see the movie now.....

I've seen this picture months ago but a better quality

Everybody thought that LUCAS knew a thing or two about how to use special effects, animation, CGI and all. If anyone does, he would. He practically invented that shit. Then the new Star Wars trilogy came out and it looked more cartoony and plastic than a PIXAR toon.

Why does everyone think that CAMERON would be immune to such CGI overkill and indulgence if he, too, was key in the advancement of CGI in movies?
  • Dog
Cameron is one of the few who uses cgi/props/effects just as tools to make the story believable. Others use effects for the sake of it, only to make their work more visually stunning but without any intention of giving emotion and cohesion to the whole picture, often resulting in CGI overkill as you said.

Basically, Cameron school (where I may include Neill Blomkamp) are story tellers and work on believability. The others (Lucas in the new SW, Michael Bay, etc) care a shit about storytelling and just go after visual impact and coolness
  • Does James Cameron have a cameo in this movie or does he like wearing the bottoms of a military uniform?

Oh and people lay off, it must be slow news day, who cares if you've seen this image before somewhere else.
  • Hat
Look at that dude's pants. Rad.

Despite how much I love his films, James Cameron is still a douchebag. Ever seen the "Entourage" or "Mad About You" episodes he was in? Even with retakes the guy comes off as a full on tard. Still, I love him anyway.
  • Deee
So it seems that a lot of individuals has seen the footage of this movie, who was smart and captured some footage or images?
  • dexly
I got a sinking feeling that "Avatar" is going to be Jim Cameron's "Phantom Menace". I could be totally of base, but I gotta feeling.
