Disney’s Rapunzel: Five Concept Art Images

Rapunzel

Disney Animation has released five new concept art photos for their 2010 animated film Rapunzel. As with most concept art, the pieces are absolutely beautiful. Hopefully the new non-photorealistic rendering technique employed on this production will help capture some of the painting-like beauty of these pieces. Four more images after the jump.

Rapunzel

Directed by Byron Howard & Nathan Greno (the co-director and head of story on Bolt respectively), this new telling of the classic fairy tale, will transport audiences “to a stunning CG fantasy world complete with the iconic tower, an evil witch, a gallant hero and, of course, the mysterious girl with the long golden tresses. Expect adventure, heart, humor, and hair, lots of hair.” The voice cast is rumored to include David Schwimmer, Matthew Gary Gubler, Kristin Chenoweth, Dan Fogler, and Grey DeLisle. Rapunzel is scheduled to hit theaters in Christmas 2010.

Rapunzel

Previous director Glen Keane developed a new look for this computer animated film, which is said to look and feel more like a traditional hand-drawn Disney Classic, but in 3D. Apparently the film uses a non-photorealistic rendering technique which will make the surface look like it is painted but still containing depth and dimensions. The movie’s visual style is being based on French Rococo artist Jean-Honore Fragonard’s painting “The Swing”. You can definitely see the look they’re going for in the image above.

There are a couple more very small concept drawings over on the Animations message board, but you really can’t see much of anything. A short clip of test footage was shown at Siggraph 2005, where is gained a lot of attention. Earlier concept images had been previously posted online from when the project was titled Rapunzel Unbraided. But the project has since been completely revamped. See more concept art here. And some might recall we posted a scanned magazine photo from the film a few weeks back.

Does it matter how the look was achieved? It looks wonderful and, I for one, am very excited to see the final look of this film.

I hope they are paying royalties to the Brothers Grimm...

Disney are the biggest pirates, why don't the MPAA go after them?
  • Animator
    Oh please! Hater!
  • Mike
royalties? You moron, do you not realize that those fairy tales are most likely public domain at this point?
  • Heath
These look really good! I'm glad they're doing some more 'traditional' disney movies again.

    The pictures make me giddy.

I've always been a sucker for traditional animation and nobody knew the medium better than Disney once did.

    Great ad op:
"Rapunzel uses Garnier(TM) hair productions. Garnier(TM), 'for hair that shines with all its strength.'"

Also, I'm really liking the return to the classic Disney-style animation!

Any chance that the actual movie will look EXACTLY like these concept arts? 'Coz they are amazing. Especially the first one. I get a 3D feel from the lanterns floating in the first pic.
I'm really loving how Disney is heading back to the classic animation style.

    Looks perrty
  • Amazing, really looking forward to the new rendering technique for this film! (For those who don't know, it's a fully 3D animated feature).
  • Not bad, not bad at all.

If the final animation looks half as good as these concept art pieces, I will be happy. I don't mind whether they change the style and design of the characters/locations, but they MUST keep the 2D look. So far, Disney's attempts to make CGI look "traditional" have been awful, with Bolt being one good example.
