Marvel

About a year ago, we reported that Marvel had tapped the famous animation studio Madhouse to create four anime series for release in 2010, the first two of which would be based on Wolverine and Iron Man. The anime projects will be written by renowned writer Warren Ellis, who most recently wrote the kick-ass G.I. Joe: Resolute web shorts. Now that we’re getting so close to the release dates we can finally catch a glimpse of these projects in action, and they certainly look interesting

Twitch has dug up the teasers on Youtube, which you can find embedded after the break.

First up is the Wolverine trailer, which unfortunately looks a tad generic. The only way you could tell this was a teaser for Wolverine is from the Marvel bumper at the beginning, and the fact that the main character has three claws coming out of each hand. The main character doesn’t look like any version of Logan I’ve ever seen, and honestly he just looks like any typical big-haired anime character in a generic samurai anime. As an admitted Wolverine fanboy, this teaser disappoints.

The Iron Man teaser looks more intriguing, especially since the action lends itself so well to anime like Macross. We see Stark blowing things up good in Paris Tokyo, and a villain character who is apparently also a Navy captain that has a suit of his own. Anime logic, indeed.

We can thank the success of the Animatrix and Gotham: Dark Knight (and tangentially, Afro Samurai)  for making these projects happen. And as a lover of 2D animation, I’d honestly be interested if more comics were translated to the screen with high quality animation than be over-saturated with live action films.

Update: I see now it was Tokyo Tower in the Iron Man vid, thanks for the notes.

Discuss: What do you think of these teasers? What other Marvel properties would you like to see adapted for the remaining two series?

  • I saw both of these a few weeks ago floating around on Twitter. I was very very very disappointed, especially with the Wolverine interpretation. It seems to be a samurai with claws instead of a sword. They’ve robbed Wolverine of the very essence of what makes him Wolverine.

RED RONIN AND DEVIL DINOSAUR WOULD HAVE PERFECT IF THEY WANTED TO ATTRACT A JAPANESE AUDIENCE. FREE TO TAKE LIBERTIES WITH THEM. BUT NOT RECOGNIZABLE ONES. BLADE IS PERFECT FOR ANIME AFRO SAMURAI HAS SHOWN THAT. I HOPE THIS RUMOUR IS TRUE. CLOAK AN DAGGER AN THE BLACK PANTHER WOULD BE GOOD TOO. IT WOULD MAKE UP FOR HOW THE XEROXING CHEAP STYLE BET IS DOING TO IT.
  • DRUMAT!C
IRON-MAN is clearly directed and handled by MADHOUSE Animation Director Yoshiaki Kawajiri's (Ninja Scroll/Jubei Ninpyucho) protoge, takeshi koike (Trava Fist Planet, World Record - Animatrix, and REDLINE).

Wolverine is a sorry piece of garbage, handled by what looks like to be the Television series department. Oops.
  • kooldeath
The Wolverine one look weird. When did Logan have red hair, was skinny and looked like a girl??.. oh wait the Hugh Jackman movie lol. And why is he battling demons ??

Ironman on the other hand look great. But the characters I really wanna see in anime form are Ghost Rider, Silver Surfer,Spiderman, Daredevil and I know he's not marvel but John Constantine.. that would make for one hell of an anime !!!!
  • baxkuyz
Wolverine is not Japanese... Helllooo!!!!!!! And he's not a twiggy.... so set your facts straight please....

    Iron Man is just ok...
  • Wolverine and anime, not too good a match. Iron Man and anime, gooooal!!!
  • Enthropii
    Blade.
  • gurlow
wolvie looks too bishie, if they did a story about Daken in this style it would be epic. Iron man however lends itself well to the style of animation they're going for. Hope it turns out well.
  • gurlow
wolverine looks WAY too bishie for his flick. Unless they plan on taking him in a different direction cuz even when he was "civilized" he was still a short lil bastich and in no way "pretty" A Daken flick done in this manner however would be sweet
  • Chris
    Iron Man looks great.

Wolverine woulda been alright if he looked more like Wolverine, at least.
  • Wow, that was terrible. Whose idea was this?
  • Just keep watching those "X-Men: The Animated Series" Japanese intros on Youtube for right now. It'll happen someday...
  • Amazing :)
  • starscream9289
Are you sure that wasn't supposed to be a Joe Dirt anime?
  • djtreats
So Gambit doesn't use playing cards anymore?
  • Of course the main villain had to be a handsome young man from the Hitler Youth.

Anyway, Iron Man looks awesome, Wolverine doesn't.
  • mecha + anime = iron man
  • Esteban
    = Macross, Gundam, Mazinger, etc.

is this a movie or a series, what the hell?? Your post is not very clear or informative.
Wolverine may not be for everyone but it looks to be a continuation of madhouses style (shinjuku, wicked city, ninja scroll, hunter d, highlander) calling it generic is not accurate. It is in the tradition of this anime director's style. That's like calling Tarantino generic just because he made "Basterds". It's just his style, and his new movie dumbo. Plus I have never seen a samurai designed in that fashion.
  • I thought the first sentence was pretty clear, it's going to be FOUR series, and as far as we know the first two of which are based on Iron Man and Wolverine. Also, I've seen quite a bit of anime, and there is no distinctive style in that clip. But good use of the word dumbo, really showing off your intelligence there.

The art style is often attributed to the character designer or art director. In this case it appears to be Yutaka MINOWA like the movies I listed above -it's just too early to tell. How can you say it has no distinctive style? It's not difficult to ascertain visual similarities. Asshead.
  • zebrat
sorry douchehole, he may be the minowa, but his "style" certainly looks like generic anime to me.
i guess it's his style to take a steaming turd atop our beloved wolvie.
and to answer yr other question about the tokyo tower...they know it's the tokyo tower cuz they're in frikken tokyo and that's what it looks like. douchetard.
  • zebrat
ok reign, sorry for the harshness. you see, i actually was born with a face that is deformed to resemble an ass. so, you can understand why i'd be sensitive to you calling someone an asshead. don't fret tho, the doctors assure me there's a cure. it involves lottsa exotic canola oils and the alchemical processes of tao yoga. anywho, take care now.
  • ann
it's not the Eiffel tower, but the Tokyo tower...
  • reign
How can you guys tell? It's such a small portion, and it's lit up exactly like the eiffel tower...
  • Rockie
i found these on imdb the other day

right when i was saying marvel can't touch the DC cartoons i watched the iron man trailer

    prayers were answered

then i watched the wolverine trailer...........
  • I cannot stop laughing at Wolverine's mullet!
  • It's a stylistic choice. When it comes down to it, Marvel's doing something pretty different by giving Madhouse some creative freedom with Wolverine's character design, and if the film ends up being an entertaining piece, it'll be worth it.

Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust was a beautiful film, and I would argue that the Madhouse contribution the Animatrix was the best of the set. But anyone who's see Madhouse's "Highlander: The Search for Vengeance" can tell you that just because it's pretty doesn't mean it meets the same standards of an adaptation.

When it comes down to it, Marvel's letting Madhouse play with Wolverine and Iron Man, and we get to either enjoy the films as entertaining fluff or be angry about fluff. I agree with Hardawar that this is a nice change of pace, but it's important for us all to realize that these films aren't supposed to be adaptations. Think of them like cover songs. Like the Cardigans covering Black Sabbath's "Iron Man." (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SzgZJEpLuw0)
  • tom.
The fight choreography in iron man didn't look that great. The shots were so closeup I couldn't really see what was happening anyway.
  • Move your face back a couple of inches from your computer screen, that should help with the viewing.
  • Iron Man look good, but Wolverine looks gay...
  • ironman does look much better. also fyi thats tokyo not paris. the tower he flies by is the tokyo tower.
  • LuMendz
Wolverine looks really, really bad. Reminds me too much of Devil May Cry. Iron Man looks good though.
  • John doe
Maybe in the wolverine teaaser its Daken wolverines son and not wolverine himself
  • But Daken doesn't have claws like that does he?
  • Yeah Dakens Claws are different.
  • These trailers remind me of the tv shows that made me stop watching anime altogether.
  • I've waited for something like this and this is how it's going down, huh? Wolverine looks awful. Here's what Marvel needs to do: 1.) Make the story about the X-Men. Wolvie will no doubt be there so don't freak, fanboys. 2.) Adapt a classic X-Men storyline. 3.) Stylize the animation however but at least somewhat respect established art. 4.) Make it more adult oriented like Gotham Knight. Has no Marvel imagineer thought of this?
  • Kensei
Aka make Wolverine and the X-Men into an adult style animated movie? :P
  • Enthropii
    Stupid...
  • That version of wolverine made me want to puke.

    Iron Man looks great though.
  • INS
agreed, that Wolverine was pretty sorry.

The Iron Man teaser was great, looked like he was going to bust out with a Proton Cannon at the end lol. Nice looking villain too.

Two things about the GI Joe Resolute I didnt like -- the ending was pretty lame (even though they left it open for future webisodes) and how quickly they killed off a # of characters.
  • Craigasorusrex
Wolverine is complete garbage but Iron Man looks pretty neat.

The reason why "anime" Wolverine doesn't work is because the character has almost always been a short and burly guy while this one looks like a mix between a ballerina and Vega from "Street Fighter".

Geez, hope Marvel and Madhouse have time to change the design because its atrociously generic.
  • Sketch
Change the design? Look how far they are into production with that thing, there's no way they're going to scrap that just to change the design. They'd release it, cut their losses and just come up with another one.
  • Wow. Anime Wolverine seems really... skinny. And uh, kinda androgynous.
  • Apucko
    This is not Paris :)
