Halo

In 2006, it was announced that a film adaptation based on the insanely popular videogame series Halo would be helmed by a 26-year old first-time director named Neill Blomkamp. Blomkamp went so far as to create some Halo-inspired shorts, but after several months of development, the project ultimately fell apart. Blomkamp went on to work with producer Peter Jackson to create his first feature-length film District 9, but some Halo faithful still held out hope that Blomkamp might return to the video game franchise again.

Tonight, I spoke with Blomkamp at the San Diego Comic Con about the making of District 9. The full interview will follow soon, but hit the jump for some of his thoughts on his potential involvement with the Halo universe.

When asked about the rumors that District 9 might be a way to prove his mettle for a Halo film, here’s what Blomkamp had to say:

The rumors are completely wrong…The answer is, I probably wouldn’t do Halo if it was offered to me. But creatively, I would like to do it. It’s kind of like I’d be sad to not work on it, but I would still say no.

When I asked him to elaborate, here’s what he said:

I worked on it for five months…I put a lot of sort of sweat and blood into Halo. Creatively, it’s very compelling. I love it. But, when you work that long on something and you have it bottom out and collapse…i mean, I got District 9 out of it, I think I’m probably better off because it’s more of a personal film. But yeah, I love the world of Halo. I don’t think I would go back there.

I didn’t see District 9 tonight, but I’ve spoken with many who did and from the sounds of it, Blomkamp has a hugely successful career ahead of him. I don’t think the absence of a Halo film will affect that, but for fans of the game like me, it can still occasionally be sad to look back and think of what might have been. See my full shaky-cam interview with Blomkamp here.

  • I'm a bit relieved. While a creative director like Blomkamp would likely create an interesting look at Halo in the very least, it might still prove terribly difficult. Video games movies are notoriously bad, with films like Silent Hill and Mortal Kombat being the bench marks for the genre. Halo could stand to be the first good Video game movie, with Microsoft actually involved with the production, but I still wouldn't think it would be on par with half of the Book or comic book adaptations that exist.

I'd like to see where Blomkamp goes from District 9, which stands to make a fair amount of money with the amazing viral advertising campaign they have for the film. Hopefully it has attracted enough attention to get people interested in a project they haven't heard of before January.

how is this guy so successful and so young?!

    talent?
  • Because he is actually good at what he's doing and I believe that District 9 will prove it. I foresee Blomkamp being one of the few mainstream directors who consistently produces great movies.

Also, it helps when he is the protege of Peter Jackson, one of the most trusted (by the public at least) directors in the world.

Orson Welles did Citizen Kane around that age as well...

    Visions from the future:

The year is 2020. There is already a Halo movie franchise going on, directed/produced by some hack like Paul W.S. Anderson or McG. Fans and casual moviegoers cry when remembering 2006 and the 'what if...' it could have been with Blomkamp

I have another view for you. It's 2020 and you are watching television. A news brief comes on. The Reporter: "After 14 years of drug abuse and severe alcoholism. Peter Jackson and Neil Blomkamp were found Dead in there home after an aparent Murder Suicide. The 2 film makers had been fighting both verbally and physically with eachother for over a decade after there movie District 9, failed miserably at the box office putting the 2 into chapter 11. Fans have expressed there opinions about the 2. One Critic had this to say" They should have made that Halo movie. It had the potential to knock off The Titanic as the Highest grossing movie of all time. But, they were to busy making that stupid ass movie district 9 that put them both in ruin." Well that's all for this hour. We will keep you updated as to any developing stories related to this tragedy I mean joyous occasion. All hail Cortana."
Now how do you like them apples?
  • Probably best he didn't start out with Halo anyway. I mean it could have been a disaster and he could have been the next Uwe Boll or Paul W.S. Anderson.

I don't blame Blomkamp. I honestly feel if the Halo movie happened he would have suffered the same fate that David Fincher did when he filmed Alien 3. OK, it probably wouldn't have been that bad, but anytime you have a first time director handling a major franchise with a big budget there are going to be control issues. I am really looking forward to District 9 and even if it isn't as good as I want it to be the trailer shows that this guy definitely has the talent to have a pretty dam impressive career.

Yeah, can't say I blame him now. MS and the studios missed their chance, and screwed up. Now that he's backed by Jackson and Weta. He can do any of the crazy ideas he's been talking about.
  • It wasn't Microsofts fault. About 90% of it was FOX. Neill from the very beginning has always had Jackson and his team at WETA backing them. Microsoft knew that. It came down to the budget and how involved in the project every party would be(Bungie Studios, FOX, MS)

Yes, a lot of us would like to see Halo evolve(haaah) into a movie. However, this is one game I wish to see stay in the hands of the people who created it. The incredible minds that make up Bungie Studios. We can only imagine what it could have been, and that is fine with me.
  • I have to agree with you. Give Bungie the directors chair and let Peter Jackson be a creative and mentoring force behind the scenes. He obviously greatly wants to be involved in this movie. That works because WETA Digital is probably the best special effects house on the planet. (With all due respects to ILM, Digital Domain, etc. of course)
  • What? Really? This is a film not a game. Giving Bungie the "directors chair" would be a disaster. Not just because they obviously have never made a movie, but because they haven't made a great story yet either. Let them stick to what they are good at. Making great gameplay.

Have you even played the halo campaign? If so, you suck at it. Because you would have come across an incredible story line. Bungie Rocks. Who cares if Blomkamp directs it. Those who can't direct or produce a movie turn out shit like District 9.

Blomkamp needs to distance himself as far away from Halo as possible, nearly ruined his career which didn't even begin yet. Even answering questions in interviews regarding it, I would consider to be a bad thing. Poor guy.
  • doomcue
What are you? "Stupid". How in the hell did it almost ruin his career. Especially since it hadn't got started as you put it. This could have made him an Elite member of directors. But now District 9 will surely ruin him.
  • Name
What are you? "Stupid". Maybe you should have waited until you watched the movie before passing judgment on someone else's comment. That movie made double the cost to make it in 8 days. That movie has received positive reviews. This has definitely started his career and not surely ruined him like you said.

Halo doesn't need a first time director anyway, They need someone like ridley scott, or most of all Micheal Bay. I think Micheal Bay would bring a great look to Halo, hey he took transformrs, a movie where the main characters are sjied and made it non sji and thats how i want Halo. Also i hope when they do make halo (and they will make it microsoft already said it will be made a few weeks ago it just will not be made anytime soon) that they start when John Spartan is a boy and take him through training camp and i want to see him training on maps like the pit so they can recreate some of the maps we play on everyday also he can do sniper training on vaohala or however its spelled.

Instead of taking the time to please millions of fans. You idiots decide to do district 9, are you kidding me! This Movie has so many Halo undertones. You should not have made a half ass attempt at a movie that will surely dissapoint fans. When you could have made Halo, a film that would have rivaled The Dark Knight in gross sales. But, NO let's put out a shitty movie like District 9, because we do not like to make money, or please fans. Did it not accure to you morons that Halo 3 video game out sold spiderman 2 the movie. So get off your fat ASSES Peter and Neil and make this fucking movie so fans can make you richer than Lucas.
