Comic-Con Video Blog: Thoughts on District 9

District 9

Last night I had the chance to see Neill Blomkamp’s District 9 at a special sneak preview screening at Comic-Con 2009. On the way back to the hotel after a super secret screening for Ninja Assassin (which I’m not really allowed to discuss, even though we briefly chat about it anyways), I decided to record a video blog review of D9 with Alex Billington of FirstShowing.net. I apologize in advance for the shaky cam. Watch the video blog after the jump.

    drunk or just excited?

great stuff, i am getting even more excited for District 9 and even more so for Ninja Assassin. I wasn't really impressed much from the trailer but if you guys are saying it kicks ass, then hopefully its good (+ a good storyline).

AWESOME... Great little snip it about Assassin. seriously can't wait I enjoy the Wachowski's. they always now how to make a great movie.
  • Some people would challenge that statement.
  • Peter, I have a question. Does it feel very much like you are 'taken through a ride', like with Cloverfield? Or does the faux-documentary style of it feel somewhat more believable and personal? Or... maybe somewhere in the middle like with Rec?
Im mostly wondering if you are at all emotionally invested by the time cgi aliens start tearing shit up or if it becomes a mindless action film.

Thanks for the Comic Con Vlog guys. I can't wait for D9. As for Ninja Assassin being very gory. Just what I wanna hear. Sounds like Ninja Assassin made you guys leave the theatre excited and you talked about it even though you weren't supposed to because of the excitement. Great sign.

best advice i've heard in a while: do not see G.I. Joe. you'll feel totally ripped off, i guarantee it.
  • Now I have to hold myself back from watching the trailer frame by frame.
  • exciting!!!
  • mbellerbrock
I think I watched the trailer too many times... wish I could have gotten your advice earlier. Got a lot of theories bouncing around in my head.
  • I bet they're still not accurate... Trust me, you'll be like "I can't believe I didn't get see that in the trailer" when you see the movie. It's the most hidden stuff ever... But it's still an awesome movie!

I hope your right, I like surprises, and hate predictable movie cliches. I'm so stoked for this movie, it comes out on my birthday.

I'm really looking forward to seeing District 9. I've watched the trailer a couple of times and just get more excited for seeing this film. Also if you haven't seen his short film, go onto You Tube and watch it. It's 10mins of great special effects and story.
  • Can't wait to see this.
  • Peter R
    lol drunk....
  • Peter, you gave the movie 8/10 rating, what was something from the movie that you didn't like?
  • biopy

Umm maybe a stupid question, but I have to ask...is Alex drunk?
  • Not drunk but I was more tired than I've probably ever been... And I hadn't eaten more than a slice of pizza the ENTIRE day... So... I was a bit woozy, or it seemed, but no, not drunk!
  • The Moment I saw Alex I checked out...
  • Well thanks, I appreciate your support!
  • Hey you don't need it right? You have the best website in the WORLD!

Great review. Thanks for the lack of spoilers. I'm officially steering clear of reading/watching anything else about D9 until I see it.

You all are a couple of geeks. I mean you REALLY look like a couple of geeks. This should be your last video review.
  • PrawnMan
District 9 excellent story and very entertaining truly one of the best movies since Bat man the Dark Knight.
  • jackritschel
Hated the movie! Seemed like it was non-scripted. Instead, the director must have explained what was supposed to be happening; and the actors improvised and polished their own dialogue. The first 20 minutes of exposition just about drove me crazy!
  • so I’ve figured out why they're called Prawns.
They look like “Parktown Prawns” (a large, creepy looking South African insect)
  • dork
The film was a great disappointment.
I expected a lot but it only turned out to be an irritating camera-shaking videogame. The plot-line was ridiculous and had great holes.
    The biggest crap in 2009!!!

It’s time writers should read more traditional literature to create strong storylines. Not silly, mindless violent cinematic video-games.
  • Dork Killer
Dork - This movie is like advanced maths, either you get it or you dont.

You will have to repeat a year sorry, you fucking wanker.

i think this movie couldn't have tried to be more rasict than it was. It demonised South African and Nigerians most especially in many innapropiate and unreal ways. They took it way too far with the inter-speices prostitution and eating of body parts. They are basically trying to insinuate that Nigerians are barbaric and are of a lower class and will eat humans and untamed animals and are into beastiallity. Aside from that the movie had an unorganised plot and tried to much to catch your attention with fancy special effects rather than to provide a real solid story line.
  • Great movie. Just watched it in Theaters. Can't wait for the Blu Ray
