Director Robert Zemeckis was asked during the Disney panel if the rumors were true that he was going to make a Who Framed Roger Rabbit sequel. Zemeckis smiled and went on to dodge the question, saying that he could “neither confirm or deny” the rumor. One would think that if there was nothing to it what-so-ever, he would have flat out denied the story. The crowd at Comic-Con were not happy with the response and booed, forcing Zemeckis to reveal more of his hand.

“I will tell you this, if that ever does happen, the 2D characters from the original movie will remain 2D. They will not be dimensionalized. Not to say there wont be 3D [in the movie].”

So there you have it. No solid answer but it sounds like something is definitely cooking behind the scenes.

  • I wonder if he would have access to Pixar characters?

Woody, Bugs Bunny, and Mickey all on screen at once will literally melt my mind.

In related news, Forrest Gump 2 might happen, unless it doesn't, and Back to the Future Part 4 may take place in the past, despite the title...unless it's the future. However, Romancing the Quartz Cranium, the 20+ year anticipated installment of the Jack T. Colton series, is being produced...though no confirmation or denial could be obtained.

I couldn't care less about such a project. Seriously, is there anyone clamoring for another Roger Rabbit film?
  • Solid
Me. For christ sake, have a little optimusism, people... I think it'd be wonderful to re-introduce kids today to classic characters. Lord knows that today's characters are mostly stupid and cheaply done. I just don't want it to end up an Indy 4.
  • JPX
Indy 4 was awesome. They should be so lucky to have a sequel even half as good. Roger Rabbit was not a very good film to begin with and it wasn't very successful. No kid in 2009 would be interested in it.

    You are an idiot.
Roger Rabbit wasn't a good film? Indy 4 was awesome? Fans would be lucky if the sequel to Roger Rabbit was half as good as a steaming pile of shit?

Who Framed Roger Rabbit was (and still is) an excellent film. It was also an EXTREMELY successful film. Believe me, I was there at the time. JPX, you apparently were either not alive when the movie came out, way too young to notice it when it came out or are a complete and total headcase.
  • So if this happens, it must mean that Roger will be in 2D, there will be some 3D elements in the movie, and naturally since it's Zemeckis, all the actual actors (Bob Hoskins) will be done with mo cap......URG!

I've changed my mind. Motion capture is a great alternative for characters in like "Watchmen" or "Lord of the Rings" or "Harry Potter". It's best used for when a character is not human and the actor is not physically convincing to play the role on camera.

Zemeckis is taking motion capture and using it to cut production costs for big films. And his computer effects look like they're seeking attention. Excellent actors like Tom Hanks are "motion-captured" and recreated on a fake CGI set. I think for the most part it doesn't work unless there's some artistic purpose. Beowolf can be shot, Polar Express can be shot, even a Christmas Carol can be shot and I'd rather see the actual performance. Purpose??? I don't see anything stylistically about making these projects in motion capture. I guess Polar Express works, but it still isn't a very good film. The animation in "Waltz with Bashir" worked well because the film was about lost memories.

I guess I like it best when computer technology supports the story.

I got the chance to meet with Zemeckis for a few hours earlier this spring at one of his motion capture studios, and he mentioned that they either were already working on a draft of the script, or one had recently been completed. So, although it may not be greenlit or anything yet, it IS being worked on! I hope it is done and done right.
  • I would be mildly interested in seeing this project get off the floor. Just as long as they don't rip out the soul of the original movie.

Guys, please knock off all this negativity. You're making total clowns of yourselves. Roger Rabbit was an excellent movie, not merely a good one, and we're well-past due for another visit to its world. Films as imaginative, good-looking, and well-written as WFRR don't come along very often, and when someone as talented as Robert Zemeckis (and the original cast) are in on it, it's time to have a little freaking faith and stop saying 'no' to more of a good thing. For those of you insisting that sequels are bad by default, allow me to introduce you to my friends T2: Judgment Day, Aliens, The Empire Strikes Back, Gremlins 2, Spider-Man 2, the Dark Knight, and Back to the Future, Part II. Robert Zemeckis has my full support if he's going to finally get to work on this, and I hope with all my heart that he does.
