Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland Teaser Trailer

Alice in Wonderland

Looks like the teaser trailer for Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland has dropped a tad bit early. This is the same trailer we had a spy describe earlier this week. It appears to be released by IGN, although I can’t find it there, so I’m embedding from TrailerAddict.

Here are some quick observations: You can definitely see how the 3D will be used, and its likely not subtle. Note the sequence when Alice is falling down the rabbit hole  and the Cheshire Cat’s head is popping out. The music is quite intense for a fairy tale. I’m really digging the computer enhanced looks of the Red Queen, and Tweedledee and Tweedledum. The Mad Hatter on the other hand still looks a bit too freaky and clownish for my tastes. I’m very interested to hear your thoughts. Watch the trailer after the jump and leave your thoughts in the comments below.

From Walt Disney Pictures and visionary director Tim Burton comes an epic 3D fantasy adventure ALICE IN WONDERLAND, a magical and imaginative twist on some of the most beloved stories of all time. JOHNNY DEPP stars as the Mad Hatter and MIA WASIKOWSKA as 19-year-old Alice, who returns to the whimsical world she first encountered as a young girl, reuniting with her childhood friends: the White Rabbit, Tweedledee and Tweedledum, the Dormouse, the Caterpillar, the Cheshire Cat, and of course, the Mad Hatter. Alice embarks on a fantastical journey to find her true destiny and end the Red Queen’s reign of terror. The all-star cast also includes ANNE HATHAWAY, HELENA BONHAM CARTER and CRISPIN GLOVER.

ALICE IN WONDERLAND is an epic 3D fantasy adventure starring JOHNNY DEPP as the Mad Hatter and MIA WASIKOWSKA as 19-year-old Alice, who returns to the whimsical world she first encountered as a young girl, reuniting with her childhood friends: the White Rabbit, Tweedledee and Tweedledum, the Dormouse, the Caterpillar, the Cheshire Cat, and of course, the Mad Hatter.

Capturing the wonder of Lewis Carroll’s beloved “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland” (1865) and “Through the Looking-Glass” (1871) with stunning, avant-garde visuals and the most charismatic characters in literary history, ALICE IN WONDERLAND comes to the big screen in Disney Digital 3D™ on March 5, 2010.

  • You can see that Johnny Depp has taken over this movie, which is NOT supposed to be about the Mad Hatter. God, I wish Burton would make some other sort of film for once, with someone else besides Depp. He desperately needs a change.

Depp is a great actor but i do agree burton needs to try someone else for a change.

    BTW this looks awesome
  • JB
Indeed. Depp is always attached to Burton. Sometimes it makes me wonder if they even live together...
BTW: Who else thinks Depp as the MH looks a LOT like Chris Walken???
  • As most other people have said, looks A LOT more like Elijah Wood
  • JB
Yes! I knew I saw those weird looking eyes somewhere else!!! Thank you...
  • djkeenan
    I'm thinking Madonna.
  • i would've liked to see chris walken as the mad hatter
  • fartwatcher
depp has taken over the teaser trailer, that's all we know now.
  • AshALee
I'm not getting sick of Depp being in most of Burtons films at all. I think Depp Burton and Bonham-Carter are a great trio and they all work very well together, producing brilliant and extremely entertaining movies. Perhaps one day Burton will use different actors like he did for Big Fish.
  • It still looks good, though!
  • Itri12
Exactly. Unlike Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, he looks great here.
  • Elian
I agree i think it looks awesome.

Also i like the fact that Johnny Depp is in his movies. He's perfect for tim burton movies. I couldn't imagine anyone else playing his roles.
  • Tad Ow!
Um - how about the inclusion of Crispin GLOVER ???!!!

And Helena Bonham Carter looks totally ridiculously awesome !!!

And also, btw, this looks like its closer to Carroll's follow up, Through the Looking Glass, since she's older and returning to Wonderland.

You think b/c he shows up in 3 shots at the end of the trailer that he's going to be the main character?

You're WIRED for hype man. You have no idea what you're talking about.
If you could make films starring your best, most talented friend for the rest of your life and they kept doing well & you kept having that creative freedom - wouldn't you?

    Yeah. I thought so!
  • monkeymafia
"You think b/c he shows up in 3 shots at the end of the trailer that he's going to be the main character?"

He narrates the trailer which conludes with the statement "To survive you need to be as mad as a hatter, which I am", he's got a character poster, he was the focus of the first publicity shot (or one of the first I may be mistaken) and his trailer time is nearly equal to Alice's but he's given the last few punchy seconds to really sell the film.

He may not be the main focus but I think too much of the film is for better or worse put on Depp's shoulders. We all love Jack Sparrow, but has he really been terrific in anything since (Secret Window? The Libertine? Once Upon a Time in Mexico? Wonka?) I'm saying it - unless he's a pirate or a gonzo journalist, Depp's average.
  • jason B
@ all complaining about depp's 'screentime'.

have you considered the possibility that disney is using depp as a marketing tool for ticket sales? he's such an enormous draw, while no one has ever even heard of the girl playing alice. and since burton's vision will be so drastically different from that old beloved cartoon, maybe disney is just trying to fill the theater on depp's back. from a business standpoint this make sense, and is far from being unheard of.

but in the end, yes absolutely alice - and not the hatter - needs to be the main character/focus. i hope yer all aware of the fact that this would not be the first time a film is inaccurately commercially presented in order to 'sell' it to the public.
  • Nesti
so you would think a Disney/Burton movie, that also happens to be an amazingly popular piece of literature which was once one of disney biggest animated movies of all time, would need 'help' getting people to the theatres?
    I really dont think so.
  • jason B
actually if you had read my post you'd see i said it was just a possibility, and if you are completely honest rather than snarky you couldn't deny that this is exactly how film/business marketing is executed.
  • kitty5
that does sound very true and a reasonable idea. I like it.

But also Johnny Depp has forever been in Tim Burton movies so maybe Burton just wanted one of 'his' actors to appear in this movie. even if it's just for a few scenes. why not sneak him in for a little crazy role. Even if it's not much, it's still depp. i'm happy =)
That other chick is one of his actors too..i forgot her name(my memory sucks) she played the main lady role in Sweeney Todd but I don't think she's in this one sadly.
  • Um, cough*Finding Neverland? Sweeney Todd?*cough.
  • Jingoist
Herein lies the problem. You are movie fans who have not seen enough movies to know what you're talking about.

This movie isn't being made for you. It's being made for Tim Burton fans, Alice in Wonderland fans, and adventurous Disney fans (who might consider imbibing some 'little helpers' on the way to the 3-D experience).

What did you do today? BLOG???

Last night I wrote a script, managed a band, met with an actor and, with my free time, watched "LOST IN LA MANCHA". What could have been a very promising Depp film.

The sense of ENTITLEMENT to be spoon fed what you think you want - when you DON"T KNOW WHAT YOU WANT - it's disgusting.

    Truly, truly disgusting.

I, for one, am celebrating Tim Burton's return to his roots. Working with Disney - the company that gave him his first big break, with "FRANKEN-WEENIE".

And to those talking about artists and liking artists' artistic growth, blah, blah, blah.

Thou doth protest too much - because the Art Critic STILL has no control over the output of the actual artist!

I seriously worry - that the Photorealistic, Microscopically Analytical nature of Internet Reaction faux-journalism is completely subverting the ability for mass audiences to believe in film anymore.

WHAT DO ANY OF YOU DESERVE FROM FILM? You're an audience member. Act like one. Eat your popcorn. And stop ruining it for the rest of us w/ your overimportance.

Jonny Depp is a star. And a better actor than anyone you know.
    YOU. CANNOT. DO BETTER.

    SO. SHUT UP.
  • Chuggz
Couldnt agree with you more dude
  • No you STFU
    Self important asshat.
  • Nesti
    wow.
    Im impressed.
You met with an actor...how exhausting...you managed a band...also exhausting...listen as a former musician/booking agent/tour manager nothing short of saying you work for bruce springsteen will impress me...Ive played to crowds of 10,000 plus...I am POSITIVE i have worked with bigger bands than you ever could.
OUR self entitlment? last i checked this was a BLOG where people state their OPINIONS.
Opinions? Ya know those things everyone is entitled to?
I cant speak for anyone else but im not doing anything else than giving MY opinion on an upcomming movie...i dont look at it as anything more than that. No one here claimed to be a critict...It was my understanding this website was a place where people can exchange their view on upcoming movies.
    Apparently i was mistaken.
  • Jingoist
Clearly I wasn't referring to you. Sorry if my opinion somehow pulled you into believing that.
  • Rabbitstew1
Wait-- wrote a script, managed a band, met with actor, and watched a movie. So that makes you... what? Unemployed?
  • jason B
im gonna agree with nesti here, and say that some of us just use these sites to chat about films and put our opinions out there to be debated.

i for one enjoy the anonymity of the web, and could never imagine the need to put my resume of arrogance in a talkback. are you serious with that stuff? usually the loudest braggarts are full of the most shit - so if you are telling the truth, just keep on truckin', and keep the patting yourself on the back stuff for your bedroom.
  • I'm sorry, did I come into the comments section of /Film.com to have a lecture about my life? Well, obviously I didn't come to share my opinion, that is just CRAZY.

And by the way, what do you think you just did right there? Talking about how we should just get off Burton's case and keep our opinions to ourselves. NO, I WANT TO KNOW. Oh, what?

YOU SHARED YOUR FREAKIN OPINION! And bye the way, by ACTOR he ment EXTRA, by MANAGING A BAND he ment PLAYING ROCK BAND, and by WRITING A SCRIPT he ment creating some stupid Edward Scissorhand's fan fic where Edward LOSES the hands. AAH!
  • madpizza
Wait...What exactly makes your opinion worth more than mine? You sound like a nerd, just like the rest of us. You posted a comment on the same blog I did. If you know the world of entertainment business as well as you claim, you know it's full of self-obsessed elitist assholes. Thanks for being part of the problem.
  • TMorren
'What do any of YOU deserve from film?' Just because anyone is somehow involved in the industry doesn't mean that they are therefor 'in the know' or able to comprehend a film on a higher plain of knowledge. Oh how amazing it must be to understand it all more than us mindless drones who are just there to give money to the studios so to make these films for 'the true fans'.

If you are so deeply involved like you think you are then this film wasn't made for you either. If you seriously believe that a Disney production was made for anything other than the mass market first and foremost, then you are fool, along with a self important hypocrite. How can anyone accuse people of a sense of entitlement and then come out with such nonsense?

I'm going to put something in capitals for you to better understand too. PRICK.
  • Return to his roots? How is that movie any different from his last ones?
  • Wiimo
Uhh, pretty much all the main characters have a poster. Disney is obviously using Depp's name & face to sell the movie to more people.
  • Pegasus Ventrice
To me other than Wonka Johnny Depp has never made a wrong choice in films. And I can't wait to see him in this one. I am sure that his acting will stand out. What you really are complaining about is the story line of the movie not the actors. Plus who else could you think to play the Mad Hatter than Johnny Depp?

    Yeah. I thought so!
  • joker93
    Well he made Big Fish
  • Chelsea
Holy crap, guys. This is a TEASER trailer. TEASER. Not the ACTUAL trailer. Not the ACTUAL movie. Many a time a TEASER trailer only focuses around one character or event!! Chill out a bit.
  • ScanCase
I agree that the 3D may not be too sublte but this film looks like a fun ride. It reminds me a little of Tim Burton's Beetlejuice days. Hopefully the plot it solid and isn't a series of visual set pieces.
  • Anthroman78
Does anyone else have problems with TrailerAddict's trailers loading? They are always so choppy for me.
  • Yeah sorry guys. The link I sent was working when I first watched it, then a few minutes later it wouldn't load. I'm sure IGN was getting slammed.

As for the trailer, I think it looks great. I agree with ScanCase, the visuals looks amazing, but it won't be worth a damn with a shitty plot. The colors and art direction are going to look incredible in IMAX.
  • Looks brilliant! @rayderousse; this is just a teaser. The Mad Hatter is a important character, but Alice is the main. So... don't be so dramatic.
  • StephenKing
I hope this is not the final version of the vfx. Because it looks very bad!
  • Travis McGee
Depp sounded way to much like Captain Jack Sparrow in this trailer.
  • Chester the Cat looks great, as do the White Queen and Queen of Hearts. However, I dislike Alice's strapless, 70s-style dress. WTF? Who came up with that stupid dress concept for Alice?
  • CheshireAna
Judging from the clip before, when she shrank out of her clothing, it looks like she just somehow had to throw together a makeshift dress.
  • dsahawker
I'm not digging Chester. I like the mouth, but the top half of the head is a miss for me.
  • Craigasorusrex
That was a pretty neat teaser. Not to thrilled with some of the CGI but this is just a teaser and I'll need a higher res version to fully evaluate.

    But the designs look great.
  • As much as I love Burton's films, he's definitely got a shtick and he isn't deviating from it at all. I'm slightly disappointed to see the same old shit from him time and time again with the same casts. I don't think that this Alice looks like a bad film, and I'll definitely be seeing it, but it could have been so much more. Instead, it just feels gimmicky.

I'm wishing that Wes Craven directed American McGee's Alice was still happening.
  • Octoberist
It's beautiful. Despite what I think of Burton now (too much in his comfort zone), I'm looking foward to Alice.
  • bbooms
Wake me when Burton does something new.
  • Tim Burton is his own genre don't you think? And with Johnny Depp? I'll go see it just to watch the combination and throw the story to the winds...
  • glenjm
    Too much CG.
