District 9

Thirty years ago, aliens made first contact with Earth. Humans waited for the hostile attack, or the giant advances in technology. Neither came. Instead, the aliens were refugees, the last survivors of their home world. The creatures were set up in a makeshift home in South Africa’s District 9 as the world’s nations argued over what to do with them.

Now, patience over the alien situation has run out. Control over the aliens has been contracted out to Multi-National United (MNU), a private company uninterested in the aliens’ welfare – they will receive tremendous profits if they can make the aliens’ awesome weaponry work. So far, they have failed; activation of the weaponry requires alien DNA.

The tension between the aliens and the humans comes to a head when an MNU field operative, Wikus van der Merwe (Sharlto Copley), contracts a mysterious virus that begins changing his DNA. Wikus quickly becomes the most hunted man in the world, as well as the most valuable – he is the key to unlocking the secrets of alien technology. Ostracized and friendless, there is only one place left for him to hide: District 9.

Doesn't he look like fat Spike Jonze?

    No.
  • I'm suddenly reminded of David Arquette as Dewey in Scream.

Man I cannot wait for District 9...going to be awesome
  • That looks positively ridiculous.

Gotta say, this is another step in the disappointing direction. The full trailer disappointed me because it displayed more of an action/adventure take, but that is to be expected, because a faux doc about a bunch of aliens simply being forced into slums probably wouldn't sell like this would.

People keep saying this, but who the fuck would want to sit through a 2 hour long documentary about aliens in Africa if it had no action. Even Cloverfield had action, and the whole documentary-style was fucking annoying. I'm glad it's this way.
  • that is quite an ignorant statement (donaldduck). of course a smart director could create a good alien film without huge action scenes. It doesnt have to be a '2 hour long documentary' as you say, but there are infinate ways you could create a story based on that situation without resorting to cliches and satisfying teenager expectations. Nobody is completely against a little action, but the way it seems to be done in the trailer completely contrasts with the reasons the original short was good. i wanted to see something original.. not another cloverfield / quarantine. once it gets too high budget and starts feeling like a hollywood film, you simply don't buy into the feux documentary style that it relies on. im not asking for blair witch level of filmmaking, but honestly, for something like this, big action scenes with cgi aliens jumping all over and fighting and catching rockets shot at them is a bit much. its just disappointing to see more of the same old shit from a director who has unique sensibilities and potential to do something new.

You could tell all this from the trailer?? (those action scenes could make-up a very small percentage of the movie)

Not only that, but actions scenes & originality are not mutually exclusive (although Michael Bay would want you to think otherwise). The Hurt Locker is a perfect example.

i'd love to see a feaux doc on aliens in africa... on DVD... in december... at my house... when i have nothing else to do. this image looks great and tells me i'm going to get the action movie bloomkamp can hopefulyl make.
for someone who likes big explosions, which given your name i assume you do, i am disappointed you aren't looking for an action movie out of this.
  • I'm rather interested to see how Blomkamp uses the faux doc shooting style in an action sci-fi movie.

I was really interested in this flick, still am really I guess, but when i heard the guys DNA gets changed and he gains the ability to use the aliens weaponry it lost some appeal. The reason is...... it's not as realistic anymore. I wanted to see a real "what if" scenario.

Pretty much everything about this movie sounds ridiculous, I mean alien apartheid in South Africa, ... really?... but the attention to detail and general feel of the footage totally sells this for me. I think that's the main reason I'm so interested in seeing this - an outrageous story you can believe in because of the way the story is told. I'm crossing my fingers for this not to suck.

why not south africa im bored seeing aliens always coming to america at least its something different
  • kfizz
Its freaking aliens any thing could happen. The fo dock film style is more to set up the world and back round to fill you in on what is going on in this world.
  • Bull
Are you kidding me? It is a film about aliens living on Earth. Anything is possible. Don't you think they would have access to technology that we may have not discovered yet? This is just a sad comment.
  • Martin
Kinda looks like a pimped out Super Soaker.

But i have no doubt this movie will rawk!
  • Rockie
    fun stuff

now if they could just make a portal gun....
