Sean Bean Plays A Game of Thrones

A Song of Ice and Fire, George R.R. Martin’s fantasy series that begins with the novel A Game of Thrones, is being adapted into a series by HBO, and Sean Bean has just nabbed the lead role, according to THR. (This news was actually reported last week by the George R.R. Martin fansite Winter is Coming and I let it pass as too unsubstantiated. Oh, well.) Bean will play the honorable and upright Lord Eddard ‘Ned’ Stark, Warden of the North, who acts as advisor to King Robert I Baratheon, a role for which Mark Addy is in final talks.

The Station Agent and The Visitor director Tom McCarthy is directing; David Benioff and D.B. Weiss wrote the screenplay which adapts Martin’s text about the conflict between two sprawling royal (and semi-royal) families in a land reminiscent of medieval Europe, where seasons can last for decades, making the coming winter seem particularly dire and uncertain. The text is a massive knot of politics, intrigue and backstabbing, making the HBO series seem quite ambitious. (Benioff has said that the lame way to describe the series would be “The Sopranos in Middle Earth.”) Peter Dinklage has been the primary known cast member for the last couple months.

Martin has a few enthusiastic words about these and a few other casting choices on his LiveJournal, in an entry which ends with “so far I couldn’t be happier”:

For the movie fans out there, Sean Bean needs no introduction. I mean, what the hell, he was Boromir and he was Sharpe, he was terrific in both roles, and in a hundred other parts besides. I can’t imagine a better Ned. The deal took some doing, so my fingers have been crossed for a month now (and boy, that made it hard to type), but now it’s done, and I’m thrilled.

For King Robert I Baratheon, we’ve got Mark Addy, a veteran British actor of stage and screen that many of you may remember from his fine turn in A KNIGHT’S TALE.

The roles of Joffrey Baratheon, the crown prince, and Viserys Targaryen, the beggar king, have also been filled… by Jack Gleeson and Harry Lloyd, respectively. Sorry, I haven’t been able to find pictures of them on the internet yet, though I’m sure they are out there somewhere. I’ve seen readings by both Gleeson and Lloyd, and both should be terrific.

And last, but certainly not least, the role of the bastard Jon Snow will be played by a young actor named Kit Harington. You probably haven’t heard of him yet… but you will, we’re confident. David and Dan can’t say enough about his talent and intensity.

Good choice, Sean Bean is an excellent actor

Does that character die? Sean Bean picks his roles based on the characters death
  • Tom
    SPOILER ALERT:

Yes, and it is heartbreaking. An excellent death.
  • I could stare at Sean Bean all day.
  • The Iron Avenger
I have the first book in this series but I haven't started it yet because I'm wrapping up my Dark Tower binge. Once I'm done though I look forward to starting this series!
  • WinterIsComing
Buckle up when you start. This series will consume you.
  • prat
gah, the dark tower is ridiculously long. I read it ><'

but yeah like WinterisComing said, the ASOIF series will consume you.
  • This past year has been good to GRR Martin, this series is finally getting the press it deserves.
  • thrillhouse
    Aces.
  • Pretty sure the fantastic metal band The Sword base their lyrics on this series

hmmm...what's the over/under on how long this ambitious fantasy series lasts? not that it doesn't sound great, hbo just doesn't have a great track record with this sort of production.

This one of my favorite series of books, and I could not be more pleased with the pick of actors. Having literally met George R. R. Martin--at his house no less (don't really care if you believe me or not)--I consider myself a huge fan and I think that the show will completely live up to the books.
  • prat
howd you meet him at his house?
  • Lee
Okay, I'll respond because I guess I really do care. He lives in the same town as I do, Santa Fe, New Mexico. I got to meet him through a mutual friend (a stained glass artist who made windows for his house).
  • Sean Bean really needs more roles. Such an excellent actor and all he will be remembered for is Boromir and the villain in a Disney film. =\

I agree he is an excellent actor but Lord of the Rings wasn't his crowning achievement in my eyes. Don't get me wrong I think he was awesome in Lord of the Rings but imo he is most well known for Sharpe in which he is fantastic. He has also made appearences in a number of other films I enjoyed such as Goldeneye, Bravo Two Zero, Equilibrium. He could certainly use some more leading roles like he used to get during the 90s.
  • Yes, I agree that LoTR is not his crowning achievement. But because of how big it was, that is what he will be remembered for. He was excellent in Equilibrium but, honestly, how many people have seen it? Never saw or even heard of Sharpe, though. Goldeneye, again he was a villain being overshadowed by Pierce Brosnan. At this point, he is most recognized and remembered for his roles as Boromir and as the villain in National Treasure where he, quite handily I might add, stole the show. (Same can be said of the second film. Ed Harris was easily the best part of that film.)

I highly recommend you get hold of some Sharpe DVDs if you are into the Napoleonic Wars era. It is one of my favourite shows of all time. Look it up on wikipedia for more info ^^
  • Great choice. I've been hoping they will get more names/faces people will recognize. High hopes for this series. Fucking fantastic books.

Unfortunately, HBO is going to cancel this after the second season, because that is what HBO does. However, they are not going to be completely to blame since it takes Martin 5+ years to finish of these, they are going to realize they aren't going to have anything to film after awhile. He has 4 of a planned 7 books published so far.
  • Sean Bean is a pretty great choice, but I'm just stoked to read that Dinklage is going to play the dwarf role. That is actually closer to a true "lead" of the saga (so far) than anybody else and he is the perfect choice. That alone gives me hope for the series in general.

    Excellent...
And i what Orlando Bloom as the Knight of Flowers.
