Kato Casting Call Kicks Chow To The Curb?

kato_mask

It would appear from a freshly surfaced casting call that the role of Kato in Michel Gondry’s Green Hornet movie is currently vacant. After it was announced that Seth Rogen was to write, produce and star in a Hornet flick a heady cocktail of skepticism and intrigue flooded the web. Then, it was announced that Stephen Chow was going to both direct and co-star in the picture and the general level of enthusiasm went through the roof. After that, a nosedive as Chow left the director’s seat and while it seemed likely he’d also pass up on the acting position, nothing was made official and Rogen even intimated that Chow was just as likely to be his Kato as ever. This remained the case even after Gondry was announced as director.

That all changes now, however.

Here’s a short casting call for the part, as scooped by Spoiler TV:

[KATO] ALL ASIAN ETHNICITIES, Male, 20’s - early 40’s. Brit Reid’s manservant/chauffeur by day and Green Hornet’s martial arts-skilled sidekick by night. Actor doesn’t have to have Martial Arts experience.

We could chew that over all night, from the indifference to actual specific ethnicity through the vague age range requested to the lack of necessity for pre-formed Martial Arts skills. Be my guest.

I trust Gondry implicitly, and I think Rogen is a very dependable individual to have so closely attached to a project like this but, if the truth be told, I’m not reading much joy in the tea leaves for this one. Nothing seems to be going to plan. I’m hoping that some good, strong announcements come out of the Hornet camp soon and swing the focus back onto the great stuff this film has going for it.

I bet the casting of Tony Jaa would put a smile on plenty of faces… but should it? Perhaps Rogen and Gondry have more in store for Kato than acrobatics and balletic smackdowns. The kind of more Chow can do in his sleep.

  • Legend
This movie sounds REALLY fucking stupid.
  • khbh
Ahh! Now I see how you got to be a legend!
  • you and the movie have A LOT in common.
  • Fir3Wolf
Well now is the chance for David Chen to step up and show the world he has got what it takes.
  • Hmm...I know he's a bit young, but I think Aaron Yoo (Nick and Norah, Disturbia) could do a good job as Kato
  • khbh
I like that guy alot. But I don't think he's Kato.
  • graham7x
I just looked and that guy is 30
  • GregoryV
There is no Green Hornet film without Stephen Chow. Michel Gondry shouldn't miss a good thing.
  • Gelman
The Asian from MAD TV should play the role!
  • mike
    how about john cho?
  • abergamo
A part formerly played by Bruce Lee to have no martial arts experience needed? That's total BS... this is HIGHLY spoiling my opinion of the film regardless of Rogen and Gondry being attached (which I thought was amazing). They NEED a martial artist to play Kato, to pull off crazy stunts and karate moves like Lee did.
  • Sketch
The way I see it, is that they'll pretty much train the person for the stunts. I don't think it means the character itself will not be doing any.
  • Merciful_budah
Keanu had no practical Martial Arts training prior to the matrix. Van Damme was a Ballerina prior to being in eleventy billion Action movies. Hell, Willem Dafoe had never played piano or spoken Spanish before shooting his scenes in Once Upon a Time in Mexico. Point is, they're probably looking for something specific in terms of casting the character and then they'll train him to do the movements they need captured on film. It ain't the 60's and 70's no more. Back then, to shoot martial arts you needed a legit Martial Artist. Nowadays, with CG, stuntmen, camera tricks, and a good fight choreographer, they could shoot Zach Galinoph... Galig... Zach Snuffleupagus kicking a bunch of people's asses and it would look convincing.
  • abergamo
Yeah but I don't want to see CG and I don't think anyone else does (example: Matrix Reloaded fight scene with Keanu and all the Smith's, super lame) , I want to see real people doing real stunts, real fighting moves by real professionals. I can respect that they're looking for something within the character, but they can find someone who actually knows what they're doing. I mean, in an ideal world that's what I would want. That's what makes Jackie Chan movies so fun to watch, he does all his own stunts. You know it's Jackie. I'm more old school than most I guess.
  • Merciful_budah
I'm with you there. I'd totally prefer to see something done with practical effects, I just don't want to dismiss this movie on those grounds. And while you're point about Matrix Reloaded is totally merited, I was talking more about the first film and how good those fighting scenes looked.
  • MissMe
    Zach Snuffleupagus

ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha haahahahahahaha *GASP!* ha ha ha ha ha ha hahahhahahahaaaa!!

This is SO what I always want to call him!!
  • Why are they doing this, and who do they think will see it? It was a bad idea when Clooney was rumored to be attached. It's a bad idea now. Hollywood needs to create new material! Come on!
  • youngblaze
im surprise Kato is going to be played by an asian since Hollywood like to change asian characters to be played by white guys
  • The Dude
    oh snap!
  • Guest
LOL im speaking the truth asian characters always been changed to be played by white actors

but for this case Kato always been a man-servant to his white boss Green Hornet so maybe the studios bosses might say no point to change Kato to be played by an white actor lets keep him asian cause his a perfect asian man-servant
  • GreatBigLion
Ken Jeong (Knocked Up, The Hnagover, Funny People) as Kato!
  • Joe
I swear, I went to see Bruno last night, and half of the 8 trailers in front if it featured Ken Jeong in them (Funny People, Couples' Retreat, The Goods, All About Steve).

If anyone's gonna get their career killed by overexposure, it'll be Jeong. Which is why I fully expect him to land this role...
  • AntiHero
I agree, he was great in Role Models, and also Pineapple Express.
  • jason B
i never had any interest in the green hornet, and the only thing that piqued my curiosity was chow's involvement. however i'm always interested in seeing what gondry can do (though i'd prefer another original story from him), so when he came aboard, i was kept MILDLY interested.

but as many here have stated, this film continues to have more bad news than good. so i find myself returning to my initial feelings about the green hornet: don't really care.
  • jason B
i forgot to say: all of my disinterest could be changed with a kick-ass trailer, so we'll see.
  • BrendonConnelly
I expect, eventually, we'll get just that. And then a good film to follow.
  • Sketch
Too bad it wasn't a casting call for Reid instead of Kato. Rogen is really the only thing I'm against in all this.
  • Chow was the main reason I was looking forward to this movie. Everytime it looks like he's about to get his big Hollywood break, this happens.
  • Colonel_Kurtz
He doesn't need a big Hollywood break. He has China. Hong Kong is putting out more quality entertainment than Hollywood with 4X the audience. I don't know what caused the big breakup with Green Hornet, but it's looking like a train wreck anyway. There was more risk than reward for Chow in Green Hornet.

I'm officially off the Green Hornet bandwagon until I see some reviews or it (more likely) dies and goes to Development Hell. I'd say it's in Development Purgatory with Robin Hood right now. Damned with a slight chance of salvation.
  • BrendonConnelly
With Robin Hood? Robin Hood has been shooting for weeks.
  • Colonel_Kurtz
And fighting for almost as long. That could be good or it could be really bad.
  • Weyland_Yutani
This project was stillborn the moment Seth Rogen became attached. Love Mr. Gondry and hope he gets a nice paycheck, but this has "3 days and done" written all over it.

It's an obvious case of a star actor overreaching.
  • graham7x
I say either Tony Jaa or Sung Kang for Kato
  • brou
I really can't picture Tony Jaa in this role... Chow was interesting 'cause he has acting chops and he can do comedy and he has this kind of "chaplinesque" quality that I think Gondry could have used very well... I don't think that Tony Jaa has any of these things.
Anyway, this casting call doesn't bother me too much... I think that we can all admit that Chow being not involved in this was predictable. As long as Gondry is artistically free on this, there's no way to worry about this film, IMO.
  • ezgoo
    GO FOR IT CHEN!!!!
  • Danos
Cameron Diaz IN, Stephen Chow OUT.

I've officially lost all interest in this film.
  • Octoberist
    This is frustrating isn't it?

Stephen Chow was like the..moneyshot here, besides Gondry. I like Rogen and all, but it's not like this is the 'star making' movie of his because he's already big.
  • If Chow is out and Rogen is playing the Green Hornet, might as well go all the way and make Ken Jeong, Bobby Lee, or Masi Oka the new Kato. Let me be clear: I am not advocating any of this.
  • ITHoTMK
Seth Rogen? Michel Gondry? It would only be fitting to see Kato portrayed and the clumsiest sidekick ever put to film. Imagine a role reversal between Jack Burton and Wang and you'll have an idea of what I'm talkin' about.
  • Why?
Now all they have to do is get rid of Rogen and the film might make it.
  • this movie is now just fucked. i know i might get alot of bashing for this but the fuckin weinsteins should have hold on this property instead of giving it to a big fuck up like seth rogan
  • This goes well together with my todays reviewing of Evening Harder and Smiths version of Green Hornet...
  • topheavy
Stephen Chow would have been perfect, but Gondry left me dry-mouthed with Be Kind, Rewind.. blarg.
  • If you have any info regarding contact/location of this casting call please let me know.

    Thanks.
