Will Twilight Ruin This Year’s Comic-Con?

comiccontwilight

Update: Comic-Con has partly responded to fan concerns by moving the Avatar panel until after the Twilight presentation. Unfortunately, the Disney 3D panel (Tron 2, Burton’s Wonderland) remain before the Summit panel.

I’m not a Twilight hater. We wrote about the first film a few times, and received a ton of extra traffic as a result. But I learned quickly that it just wasn’t my cup of tea. Not only that, but it isn’t something most /Film readers are interested in. That’s why we generally don’t cover the Twilight films (aside from some trailers or page 2 items). Unlike others, I don’t feel threatened by the books, films, or insane fandom. Why should I? Twilighters can do their own thing, and it really doesn’t affect me at all… except for when it does. And the one time it might is at a place called Comic-Con.

Probably the most anticipated film at Comic-Con this year is James Cameron’s Avatar. But only second to Tron 2, a film almost 30 years in the making which was the surprise sensation of last years con. For those who don’t know, they have retrofitted the main hall at the San Diego Convention Center, Hall H, for 3D presentations this year — a Comic-Con first. What this means is that the first two panels in Hall H on Thursday are in 3D (Disney 3D and Avatar). I assume they did this so that they could easily pass out 3D glasses to those entering the hall in the morning. If they had held the 3D presentations later in the day, distribution of 3D glasses could have been complicated. Sounds logical, right? But not when you add Twilight into the mix.

Summit Entertainment’s panel takes place 15 minutes after the close of the Avatar presentation. Anyone who attended last year’s Comic-Con can attest to how much of a cluster-fuck was caused by Twilight’s presentation in Hall H. Hundreds of tweens and Twilight Moms/Dads camped overnight to be the first ones into Hall H. By the time the “normal people” began to line up hours before doors were set to open, thousands of Twilighters were already in line.

Hall H fits 6,000-6,500 people , yet many people were shut out of the opening 20th Century Fox panel, and when the Summit panel began you couldn’t even hear yourself think as four or five thousand Twilight fans screamed in unison. It was a bit sad seeing a 50-year-old Twilight Mom asking a 22-year old Robert Pattinson if he wears boxers or briefs, but Im not writing today to talk about that. When the Summit panel ended, Hall H rapidly emptied, as more than 80% of the people exited the building. The rest of the day/weekend became a lot less stressful. But a lot of the people that wanted to attend the early morning panel missed out.

By placing the Summit panel (AKA The Twilight Saga: New Moon panel) as the third panel of the day, they are forcing thousands of movie fanatics out of Hall H. Unless you’re willing to brave the crowds and show up 4-5 hours before HALL-H opens, the seats will be taken by Twilight fans. Twilight fans who probably aren’t interested in Avatar. Many of those people who want to see previews of A Christmas Carol, Alice In Wonderland, Tron 2 and Avatar will be left out. A huge chunk of the audience that Disney and Fox had hoped would attend their 3D presentations will be unable to enter the Hall.

Even Industry trade newspaper The Hollywood Reporter recognizes the potential problem:

Apart from the high-level interest in Avatar and Tron, Hall H might also see a repeat of last year’s female fan frenzy with Summit’s presentation of New Moon. In the program lineup unveiled Thursday by Comic-Con International, the “Twilight” sequel panel takes place after the “Avatar” session.

I’m not complaining for myself (I might be able to get into Hall H through industry connections or what-not). I’m complaining for the 4,000-6,000 people that will likely be shut out of these awesome Hall H presentations in order for Twilighters to save their seats for the Summit panel.

What could be done to avoid this potentially disastrous situation? I would suggest that they move the Twilight panel to the beginning of the day and clear out the hall afterwards. If Comic-Con did this, it would solve everything. But we’re only two weeks away from show-time. The event schedule is live on the official Comic-Con website, and I’m sure the programs have already printed, so I’m not sure any schedule shifts would be possible.

Another potential solution would be to publicly announce that Hall H would be cleared out following the Avatar presentation. This would create a separate Twilight line for the Summit presentation, which would allow the non-Twilighters to see the two 3D panels.

Studios spend tens of thousands of dollars flying out talent for panels and preparing breathtaking clips for these massive presentations, which are specifically designed to get the positive word out on upcoming films. It would be a shame for Disney and Fox if their failure to anticipate Twilight madness cost them a precious opportunity to reach their target audience. Then again, similar oversights have happened before.

If this occurs, I guarantee rioting on the show floor.
  • twilight ruins everything, so of course it will.
  • bren
Save us from pathetic male geeks. Has it ever occurred to you that women who arent interested in some of the heavily male focused geek films but are interested in some of the fantasy adventure movies like Harry Potter have had to suffer the same indignity at these events for years. Toughen up.
  • Michael
I wouldn't say that's the issue here. The issue being addressed here is that people who come to see Twilight, and ONLY twilight, will cause many people who are there for the whole event to miss out. I would say Twilight may have it's place at the Con, but that it shouldn't overshadow everything else there simply because of the Twilight fanbase.
  • Michael has it exactly right. The San Diego Comic Con sells out every year anyway and Twilight interupts some big parts of the schedule, other events scheduled around that time will be ignored. Maybe some one should set up a big fantasy convention. That would make everyone happy.
  • musicsoup
Twilight still falls into the fantasy category... unless vampires and werewolves are real. So, if someone set up FantasyCon, something tell me Twilight will still be there.
  • You got the wrong idea buddy. It's not about toughing up, it's about allowing people to enjoy the things they came for, and not have them shut out because of the other people who are just place holding themselves for an event later in the day.
  • I'm not sure how this is so different from normal. Last time I went to Comic Con, people sat in Ballroom 20 all day long either waiting for the cast of Heroes and/or for a glimpse of Joss Whedon at the end of the day. I met people who had been sitting in line for 3 hours, who missed the first panel they wanted to see, but came in when they were able to be let in just in the hopes of sitting through two other panels so they could see something they actually wanted to see later. I had to get a special bathroom ticket just to leave the room briefly, or else I'd never have gotten back in myself.

No, this is business as usual for Comic Con. And who are we to say that it's more okay for one kind of fan to do it than another?
  • dirtyharry
Comic Con has turned into a whoring-ground for any old crap movie to come and get some publicity. What has Twilight got to do with COMIC-con? It annoyed me last year with the amount of Video Games companies there. Don't they have their own conventions?
  • I agree: What does New Moon (NOT Twilight- it's a diff movie) have to do w/Comic-Con? Definately a "whoring-ground".
  • Starstream
Your point if valid but an arena filled with nerds/press is too tempting to pass up for game companies so they try to swarm the event.
  • dirtyharry
The like of Harry Potter and Twilight need to get the hell out of COMIC-con. They have no place there.
  • I just think that not matter how bad or good Twilight Saga really is, it shows the the series' fans are way more loyal than any other franchise's followers out there today. If Twilighters get to the comic-con first, why fans of Avatar dont try to do the same, if they are so fanatic of the director (note: I want to see Avatar more than I want to see New Moon). I just think is stupid to complain about how x franchise fans would ruin a show when you yourself may be part of a huge mass of people that are fan of another series. Do I make sense?
  • Prat
(are you sure which avatar your talking about, just because you have zuko in your display picture :P)

but yeah, its kind of stupid calling twilight fans 'loyal' when its still a relatively new franchise. Look at star wars/trek fans for 'loyal'.

but what peter was saying is that A HUGE AMOUNT of people turn up for just one part, but ultimately end up wrecking the other days worth of events for the other majority. They really should change the scheduling in my opinion.
  • When I say I want to watch Avatar Im talking about Cameron's Avatar, Im not talking about the adaptation of The Last Airbender. I like Avatar (the nickelodeon series) but the Night's film will be crap just like Dragonball Evolution.
  • musicsoup
Loyal may be the wrong word. Fanatical is probably a better choice. Obsessive, more likely. Down right scary, well, not exactly one word, but it gets the point across.

But that is a good point you make Carlos. If all the people who want to see Tron: and Avatar showed up earlier than the Twilight people, then they'd have nothing to complain about. So, for all those who are going to Comic-Con, show those Twilighters that what obsessive really looks like.
  • But being obsessive isn't positive, and shouldn't be seen as something to compete about. Twilight fans last year: in line 4pm DAY BEFORE. Because they have NO OTHER REASON for BEING there. The people who want to see Avatar et all are at the con because they're fanatics, not obsessives. They shouldn't be obligated to give up half a day and an entire evening or the convention and following events just so they can see the two morning hall H panels. That's absurd.
  • TheMarquis
They'd be part of the same problem. The issue isn't how many fans, or how fanatical, Twilight has. It's about people place-holding seats in panels they don't care about, thus barring people from attending those panels. Each panel should be an individual affair, not a camp-out session. Simply staking out seats and occupying them without interest is a wast of money, time, and a disservice to the Con on all levels.
  • You do really understand my point. Its like when you are in college and are always late for class: if you want a front sit, be early!!!
  • kia
Yes you do. I was gonna say that too. If Twilight fans camp out/ go early, well then they deserve to get in. yeah, i get what the article is trying to say. But lets face it, Twilight is hot right now and has a loyal fan base. Just because this fanbase will cause other fans to miss the other screenings by going earlier, doesn't mean Twilight shouldn't be at Comic Con. That would be unfair.
  • sammyjankis
As I said yesterday, this is a horrible move for them, but now I wonder if they have done this on purpose to keep Hall H packed all day. It sucks big time, as I really want to see what Avatar and Tron have to offer, but this may make the line to get in even more horrendous than it already has been, and I really don't want to spend half of my day in a line to get in to this and miss out on the convention floor. I already have a feeling I will be in Hall H over half of my time at SDCC.
  • April
Has it ever occured to you that there are plenty of people who are just as interested in the Twilight panel as they are in the Avatar panel? People have diverse interests. To punish those people by making them choose just one panel, if they were to clear the room as you suggest, is ridiculous. It's also preposterous to think that Comic-Con is going to change their way of doing things because of one panel. Do you know how long it takes to clear and then fill a room of that size? That's why they start letting people in about 2 hours before the first panel. To clear and re-fill the room would completely screw up the entire day & that's what would really "ruin" this years's Comic-Con. Besides... you need to be in line early for everything & most people usually sit through a panel or two they're not all that interested in to see the one they're really interested in. This isn't any different.
  • He isn't saying the split the groups, he is saying to split the lines. If you are there for Twilight, and only Twilight, then you go to line A. If your here for anything else, go to line B. If your in line B and you still want to watch Twilight, then just stick around, otherwise you can leave with everyone else. The only thing that is punishing anyone is how they have it now.

Twilight fans may be loyal, but most of them are overly annoying about it, the books aren't that good, the movie was terrible, and who really thinks that sickly looking guy is that attactive in the first place?
  • April
Actually, he is suggesting that they clear out the Hall after Avatar (or after Twlight, if it could be pushed forward) which would keep people from seeing both.

I'm not actually a Twilight fan but I think it's crazy to try and push them out of Hall H. Most of them left after the panel last year and for the ones that stayed, well, guess what fellow Comic-Con goers... they paid to be there, just like the rest of us, and they should be allowed to camp out in a room if they want to, just like the rest of us are allowed to.

And by the way, I didn't get into that Thursday line until close to 8am last year and I was still in the first half of Hall H. So if you don't get in, you're just not showing up early enough. This is the way that Comic-Con works. If you really want to see something, you have to put in the time and effort. We can complain all we want to about how the show has gotten too big or how there are panels that we don't think fit in with the theme but it's not going to make a difference. We have a choice - we can either go and do what it takes to see the panels we want to see or we can stay home. Complaining about it isn't going to help and it's certainly not going to change the mind of the Con's organizers.
  • Michael Stat
What about moving the Twilight panel to the first of the day and allowing 15 minutes for the Twilight fans who don't want to stay for Avatar and Disney to leave the room?

This would solve everything, as Avatar / Disney fans who would have been turned away could now get it.

Last year, Twilight fans made up at least 75% of the audience and took away tons of seats from people who really wanted to see the Fox, Lost, and Heroes panels.

In my experience, 95% of Twilight fans are ONLY interested in Twilight. A bunch of them in line last year were wearing t-shirts that said, "we don't care about comic book movies, we're only here for Twilight!"
  • April
I think that would be a good, and fair, solution but unfortunately it doesn't sound like it's going to happen.
  • Matt
I agree, the books are meh, the movie was God awful, and I still don't understand why tween girls and 50 year old woman find attractive about some pale dude with huge hair. All Twilight fans should be sent to a work camp :)
  • kia
And I still don't understand why tween girls and 50 year old woman find attractive about some pale dude with huge hair.<-----------and I think you never will. Maybe men should try and understand from this DUDE what it is women REALLY want from a man. For the record, I am not a tween nor am I a 50 year old woman.
  • K
At least something has gotten more tweens to read. I think everyone should just deal with the Twilight fangirls. They will be gone in a few years any way. Allowing some time for the packed panels to clear out afterwards is probably a good idea.
  • kia
Just because you find Twilight fans annoying, the books bad, the movie terrible, and that sickly looking guy unattractive doesn't mean other don't.
  • kia
Sorry I meant :Just because you find Twilight fans annoying, the books bad, the movie terrible, and that sickly looking guy unattractive doesn't mean others do too.
  • I really don't know why Twilight would even need a spot at Comic-Con. The Twilight fanbase is already big enough to guarantee big opening numbers and those that aren't already fans probably aren't going to be convinced by that point.

Let Comic Con be what it is: a place for science, science-fiction, and comics to come together to appease the fanboy crowd (that is not a disparaging remark, as I am one) It is not as though Comic Con is stressed for attendance either. They sell out every year, so what is the reason behind this, other than to piss off anyone who couldn't care less about Twilight?
  • optimusprime
Twilight will ruin everything until they disappear in a few years.
  • Twilight will never die much like the Cullens themselves ;)
  • Chelsea
    Aha, well said!

My opinion on the matter is: People, seriously, stop complaining about Twilight. I'm sure if there were a ton of people going to see the movie you wanted to see, you would camp out early too, right? Yes, you would. We all know you all would. Twilight was a horrible movie. I respect the books, not the movie. But just because people who appreciate the literature don't appreciate the movie, doesn't mean millions of other tweens don't. They don't read the books, but they see this hot guy being all romantic. Hate to break it to you, but they'll go after that. Romance, guys, that's what they like, and Edward Cullen is just radiating romance out of every sparkle. I understand, and agree, with the main theme of the article, but there's no reason to bash Twilight. I'm sure with better actors it could have been much better. Complain about the lines, the people, but not the movie.
  • While I don't agree wholey w/Chelsea her overall point is correct. Think about all the Starwars ridiculousness a few years back (Hello!). Fans are passionate and that's what conventions are all about. Just because the fan base is primarily female it gets blown out of proportion. Not to make this a gender issue but it's true. No one said boo when hundreds of fans lined up dressed as Luke and Yoda.

    So, slow your roll on TWI fans or we'll initiate Order 66 on your asses ;}
  • melissa
On the other hand, maybe all the Twilight people will go home afterwards and not spend hours screaming in unison on the Con floor, in the signing hall..etc etc.
But good post. Its the reason I'll be skipping even trying to get in to see Avatar.
  • Michael Stat
If you will be at the Con, please don't skip the Avatar panel if you want to see it. I think what they show will be mindblowing. Plus, we need to show the Twilight people they don't rule the world.
  • You know, in the Netherlands Twilight isn't even popular, but it's got a pretty big hatebase here.

Btw, kudos on the "normal people" comment.
  • I couldn't care less about Twilight but I really wanted to attend the Avatar panel. :(
  • Michael Stat
Don't give up! We (the Avatar fans) need to pack that hall.
  • Stabmaster Arson
Remember when your little sister used to obsess over New Kids On The Block when she was younger, then a few years later you show the pictures of her all decked out in NKOTB wear to her friends? Remember the embarrassment? The anger? That's a Twilight fan in 3 years.

NKOTB > Hanson > Nsync > Backstreet Boys > Twilight
  • K
Maybe. Maybe not. If that sister was still an NKOTB fan a few years later, she would not be embarrassed. There are still NKOTB fans today.
  • Falen
I don't understand all the hate for Twilight. Sure it's not a great book series by any means, but whenever any BOOK catches the attention of teens and kids these days it is an amazing thing.
I work in a junior high and reading in general is almost torture for most of the kids so any time they adopt any book I'm all for it.
  • matt
Because the books promote horrible morals to impressionable young girls. You must have a man to make your life complete! You must completely sacrifice your own freedom and life for him! Get married young and have children and stay at home, the man will look after you! A controlling boyfriend who breaks into your room to watch you sleep and locks you in a car so you can't talk to other men is a-ok and not creepy and horrible at all!
  • ò_ò
Yeah, twilight, bad movies, comics and videogames are the plague of our society and will bring everyone to hell! Oh c'mon <_<.... why people keep writing the same thing all over the net, where are the good old original criticisms?
  • Justin
Girls only read shit. Actually, most guys too. People just read/watch/buy whats popular. I dont think they can all be blamed for it, after all most people have busy lives and dont have time to research all the newest releases, its just the nature of things. I used to get mad at people for buying the mass-marketed video games (like call of duty) over the more original, better-reviewed games (brothers in arms) that perhaps didnt get as much exposure. Theres really no sense in getting all riled up about it. I mean, it still bothers me, but to a much smaller degree. However, this twilight shit is inexcusable. The same audience for this likely reads "My Stupid Ex-Boyfriend" and "My High School Sex Life" and those kind of books, you know the hot pink background with a girl stick figure in front. No wonder people today are stupider.
  • CosmoNewanda
Because reading one brain melting piece of garbage and avoiding all other books because they don't have the cute vampire guy on the cover is really going to benefit these girls when they get older. Reading garbage has no benefit except teaching kids how to write like garbage.
  • kia
Or maybe, just maybe its just an entertaining story for them? Believe it or not, most people I know who like the books know and understand that it is just a story, and do not regard it as the bible for their lives. Give us some credit, yes even the teens. I'm sure there are some who think its the map to their own lives, but i'm equally sure most do not. And I know quite a few guys who aspire to be Jedi's when they grow up or wish their father was like Darth Vader or something. You don't like it, that's fine. I'm sure there are a lot of books or movies you like that WE don't get either. And we don't question your sanity or whine about it.
  • kia
Oh and that "cute vampire guy" actually influences these girls to read other books like Ticket To Ride, 2666,Money-Martin Amis,Doomed Love- Virgil, Charles Baudelaire Poems, E.M. Forster's short stories, Dali's autobiographies .These girls are actually interested in what he reads and goes out to read them for themselves. Imagine that.
