More Alice In Wonderland Character Photos

Alice in Wonderland

Planet Disney has posted some new character photos from Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland, which appear to be scanned from a magazine. I have cleaned up the images a bunch, and included the cleaner versions after the jump. The photos include Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter, Helena Bonham Carter as the Red Queen, and Mia Wasikowska as Alice with The White Rabbit. No characters that we haven’t see previously, but each photo gives us a better look at the make-up and wardrobe of Burton’s Wonderland. Thanks to /Film reader Jason for the tip.

Alice in Wonderland

The Red Queen Alice in Wonderland

mad hatter alice in wonderland

The film is actually a sequel to the original story, and follows Alice, now 17 years old, as she escapes from a snooty party and follows a white rabbit down a hole, back to Wonderland. The White Rabbit is convinced that he has the right girl, the one who had visited the magical land ten years prior. But Alice doesn’t remember her past visit to Wonderland. The creatures of Wonderland are ready to revolt and are hoping/waiting for Alice to help them, but will she? Can she?

Alice in Wonderland hits theaters on March 5th 2010.

Whoa... check out Alice's scars on her arms... wonder what happened. Is the white rabbit really gonna be a rabbit? Love these wicked costumes.
  • Anrkist
It looks as if they added a Posterize effect to her. I noticed it right away as well.
  • Lazers
The "scars" you seeing are the product of a someone's shitty attempt at cleaning up the picture. Its banding in the shadow gradient, the same thing that is happening in her face and neck.
  • Drbendy
Are you sure? The things round her wrist and the scars do make it seem she may be a self-harmer, perhaps but under medication. (God that sounds shit, I hope it is photoshop.
  • Lazers
Dude, trust me, when you are working with a crappy picture and try to make alot of lighting adjustments you will get "banding" in gradient-heavy areas, where light falls to shadow. They aren't scars.
  • Drbendy
Okay sorry i only have the ability to spot awful photoshopped "headswap" posters. Thank goodness someone can declare terrible theories like mine void.

    sorry.
  • Wiimo
Maybe she's emo, in an attempt to appeal to the Hot Topic crowd.
  • Lazers
Welcome to 2009, the term "emo" is no longer relevant.
  • Wiimo
    lolwut?
  • IK!
Haha, that's so incorrect. Everyone's got a "class title" now.
  • Really like Johnny depp's costume here.
  • Connor F
I still think johnny depp looks like elijah wood in his mad hatter make up
  • MirrorriM
That's exactly what I thought when I first saw the pictures. It's still hard to think that that's Depp.
  • Captain Awesome
It's weird. While I think the designs are very Tim Burton. And I don't think I have a real problem with them. I also find them to be very cliche and what I do expect from Burton himself.

It feels like I've seen this type of stuff for years, over and over again. I would love if for once someone really outdid themselves and thought outside of the box for once when doing re-imaginations of fairy take characters.
  • Ben
Not a movie, but the PC game American McGee's Alice is a pretty unique take on Alice in Wonderland
  • Captain Awesome
Dude that's what I wanted to be made into a film the most. That was the fire re-imagining that I found very interesting and original. I also thought the storyline was great too.
  • Paradox
I would have preferred they do it off of McGee's Alice, because as usual Tim Burton is going to make this a dark movie (like all his other work) and Alice in wonderland (the book) is just not dark. So I'm a bit disapointed, and as far as a sequel goes NONE of these characters look like the ones from the disney movie let alone how they are described in the book. All in all I'm pretty dissapointed with this particular take on Alice. o,0 also why did she go from blonde to brunette in 10 years?
  • Gertie-Wallace
I think its just the crappy photoshop making her hair "brown"

And...Does any one know what happened to the McGee's Alice Movie? I remember hearing about it a long time ago and then Nothing

AND...As for the whole re-imagination thing, Did anyone see Alice's MISadventures in Wonderland?
  • jason B
    @ all

hey guys, is this what 'steampunk' is? it's so weird, i cannot decide if i like these art designs we keep seeing. i have a feeling it will be absolutely beautiful as a completed work. but right now i can't tell how i feel bout it.

i think i like that it all creeps me out.
  • Anrkist
No, it has nothing to do with Steampunk. It's Tim Burton.
  • jason B
one more thing that's kind of a bummer: i can already predict in my head what depp's voice will sound like. i really hope i dead wrong, and that he isn't that predictable...but i bet we all can hear the same thing.
  • DoctorTran37
I'm honestly hoping for Hunter S. Thompson.
  • the Mad Hatter looks a lot cooler with full wardrobe. The Queen doesn't looks as bad as in the other picture, her head doesn't look so cartoony anymore. Alice looks pretty cool too. these make me a little more excited for the film.
  • Sketch
I'm still not a fan of the Hatter from the neck up. But we'll see how the lighting and scenery affect the final look.
  • Josh
I am really worried that Depp is going to pull another Willy Wonka on us. Seriously that is not only the worst performance of his career but it is also one of the most misguided performances I have ever seen.
  • Drbendy
Well as Public Enemies has shown Depp is nothing if he is not play a caricature, one of the most overrated actors of our generation. Should be filed under 'Can do Panto'
  • Solid
You talkin bout depp or orlando one hit wonder bloom?
  • Drbendy
Well Depp has the advantage over Bloom that he isn't 30% Balsa. But i do find Depp overrated.
  • Chris
This film could go so many different ways.

I love the cast, I think everybody has been cast perfectly; however, I think this over the top blend of CG and practical is giving the film a cartoonish over-tone ala WW.

I really hope this film is a success, I would love a good companion piece to AIWL.
  • Juan
Ugh. I don't think I can stare at these character designs for too long.
  • beets
These pictures are so gorgeous. The mind of Tim Burton must be a strange and wondrous place.
  • Drbendy
I have enough of this product placement, Nokia on the Bond films, now liqourice allsorts on his tie. BOo
  • JP
So this is basically Tim Burton's Hook. Does this mean he's gonna start making good movies now?
  • sean
    Shit is going to suck
  • Guest4U
    wow...that's Depp???

oscar nod just for making him look like elijah wood with crazy white makeup
  • I love Johnny Depp but the Mad Hatter char is not for him.
  • Qazku
    what is this faggotry?
  • Blake
    Grow up.
  • Blake
I don't understand how people can conclude something is going to suck based upon character designs......

Sorry there is a little art in the film and not explosions and Megan Fox bending over a car.
  • ParaPara
Why on earth would you even begin to compare this to the Transformers movies when the two are nothing alike?

People have certain expectations of movies that are derrived from books, older movies,etc...so when the concept art comes out for any movie especially those who pull their origins from things that are ALREADY defined as far as appearance goes: it is obvious how the movie could POSSIBLY play out. These character designs appear on the darker side, gloomy and not all that bubbly. The majority of alice fans do not want anything of the sort without reason. For example McGee's alice was in an asylum so it was understood why that one was dark, the chick could have been psychotic.

But seriously comparing this to Transformers? o,0 why? Two completely different types of movies. As far as Megan Fox goes I have no idea why she even needed to be in that movie.

Ohhh rigghttt, so perverts can have something to look at I guess.

on another note the queen of hearts looks rather shitty and Tim should have gone with a different actress than the chick that played Mrs. Lovette...
  • Blake
I am not comparing the movies, I am comparing peoples reactions to films like this and Transformers. A general reaction to Transformers is, "WHOA, Awesome movie!" but with movies like this or other films that some degree of art involved I hear, "That looks gay!".

When any movie tries to be a little artful with set design or character design and doesn't have a good amount of explosions or a Megan Fox type character to gape it, it is regarded as stupid nowadays.

And if we are talking about the books, if you expect these characters and ambiance of the movie to NOT be dark then you haven't read the books. McGee was on the FAR side of dark where as these are only SLIGHTY dark which they should be. AIW the book was NOT bubbly by any means, maybe you are comparing it to the first Disney film. And how in Gods name do these characters look gloomy with these acid bright colors? The photos themselves look gloomy but look at the actual posters that were released awhile back.
  • Trace
I wonder what the pig symbolizes.
  • Bob
Try reading the book and you might find out.
  • el_polacko
how many times is burton going to make the same movie ? ... and with the same cast, no less.
  • sean
Well, judging by these three pictures, the quality of this film won't be much greater than one of his other efforts to adapt a novel for children.
  • nosygary
wow ...johnny is really a colorful man he's always know how to make pepole remmber his movies.. I like the costumes ;)
  • d
Tim Burton is a creative talent that does not appeal to everyone. His target group covers a lot of us but some people just don't "get it"! My daughters are 15 and 22 and I'm...well... their mom. We are huge Burton/Depp fans and find his movies artistic and refreshing and just plain entertaining. Can't wait for this one!
  • EmoCookie
What are you talking about? Scars? Anywayss..
    IM SOOOO STOKED FOR A.I.W.!!!
For Halloween im being the Mad Hatter!!!
