Remember the time when rumors that a live-action Star Wars television series was in pre-production would have ignited swirls of fan frenzy? How things have changed. Now SciFiWire’s report that writers are being assembled down under is just another line item in a crowded RSS feed. The show has long had a planned start date of late ‘09, so this report goes along with what we’ve already known. Assuming we do see a Star Wars series premiering next year, what will it actually be?

Goerge Lucas, who will be relatively hands-off as an Executive Producer, has said several times that the show would run at least 100 episodes, and at one point there was word that could be upped to 400. He has described the show as “Deadwood meets The Sopranos in space” and repeatedly claimed that no major characters from the films would be integral parts of the storyline, but that some characters could show up as cameos. The Empire will be rising in the background, and we’ll hear about the Emporer, but not see him.

Early last year, producer Rick McCallum confirmed that Boba Fett would be “an instrumental part” of the new series (contradicting the ‘no major characters’ rule? or downgrading Boba to a minor character in the eyes of McCallum and Lucas?) which is set in the transitional timeline between Episode III and IV. Later it was reported that McCallum wants to see Daniel Logan, the young Boba Fett from the prequels, in the Fett armor for the series.

The show was originally meant to go earlier this year, but the writers’ strike postponed development. We’ve heard a lot over the last two years about writers working on scripts, and now the SciFiWire report says that “high-quality writers from the Aussie TV industry, including writers from Love My Way and Secret Life of Us” are being assembled. And a couple of months ago Rose Byrne seemed to confirm that casting had begun in Australia.

Lucas is self-financing the show, and has said they are going to write the entire first season at once, then cast and shoot it, so that it is all planned out and properly thought through. He’s still without a network partner for broadcast, and likely will remain so until there is more to show.

For me, it will suck regardless. I refuse to acknowledge the prequels as explaining away everything. In fact, there need not have ever been a prequel trilogy other than the fact that the original trilogy was labeled epi. IV, V, and VI. Anything that happens in the live-action series will be entirely formed by the events in the prequels and will likely continue to skewer the back story of the events in the original trilogy

The point is there is little if any space related sci fi / fantasy on TV. The last of the Good shows died out with Stargate IMO. Lucas is providing a much needed service to geekdom. that is all...

"the show would run at least 100 episodes, and at one point there was word that could be upped to 400"

George Lucas clearly knows absolutely nothing about TV. This does not bode well.

"He has described the show as “Deadwood meets The Sopranos in space”"

Neither of those shows were designed to run for 100 episodes (much less a completely insane 400). The Sopranos almost made it, but only because HBO insisted on stretching it out.

Can't watch this. Whiney fookers on the Internet (and nasty little gobshites like Simon Pegg) have killed Star Wars for me.

Oh well, at least I still have a million and one other things. :(
  • doober187
Boba Fett is NOT and never has been a major character. He's in about 20 min. of the 12 hr. saga, AT MOST. And he doesn't have any major effect on the plot. He's just a bad-ass bounty hunter that everyone loves, and rightly so. But the point is, he's NOT a major character, and was NOT downgraded to a minor one, he's always been minor. I'm a HUGE Star Wars fan, and have no illusions on that. I personally am very much looking forward to this show, and Boba Fett becoming a major character in the Star Wars canon.
  • skyguy
*high fives* Yeah! Anyways, I want to see how Boba become the bounty hunter he was a long, long time ago. I mean his dad, only parent, freakin died in front of his eyes. I want the see how he deals with it psychologically and see if he finds anyone that would fit that parental figure. Also, we could see some Capt. Antilles, if they allow Anthony Daniels and Kenny Baker to be on the show. See where Chewie and his tribe went afte hiding. Introduce some new characters who were a major part of the... OMG, Admiral Ackbar! They could show how he became an admiral. I'm having a total nerdgasm about this.

Man it is so freakin depressing to think what the prequels COULD HAVE been! They are a masterpiece disguised in crap! If George Lucas hadn't been such a suborn, greedy bastard, and had gotten a really talented screenplay writer and an incredible visionary director, they could have up'd the bar on an already highly anticipated Star Wars prequel trilogy, the same way J.J. Abrams did on Star Trek.

But as for this series, well, the hardcore SW fan in me has pretty much given up hope on anything new from George Lucas! Unless he happened to recently wake up and have an epiphany, and has realized just how lame he has become and is willing to change his ways completely, then I'm not interested! But I guess I should wait for a promo trailer before I give up entirely.
  • HelloJackToad
JJ Abrams Star Trek = overhyped, overrated, mediocre, forgettable, plot-hole filled wank. Disposable cinema for people that don't really like movies. Like yourself.
  • kmccarney88
Are you fucking kidding? you're an absolute idiot. J.J. Abrams's Star Trek is clearly not overhyped considering just about everyone who saw it, except for tools like you, loved the movie, including harsh critics who went in wanting to hate it! Mediocre? Do you even know what that word means, because pretty much everything else this summer EXCEPT Star Trek was mediocre, this was far from it. Forgettable, I'm still talking about it aren't I? And there are a couple plot holes, yes, but they are so minor that hardly anyone either picked up on it or cared enough to say anything.

J.J. Abrams Star Trek = Great fun, good story, incredible visuals, perfect directing, top notch cinematography, superb acting and very likable characters! So you can go fuck yourself HelloJackToad, because nobody wants to hear what a hack film lover like you has to say.

Although I would love to know what a douche bag like yourself found to be entertaining this summer?
  • frelling_cute
Oh no. George is at it again.
Unless he has good writers (Lawrence Kasdan anyone) It's going to flop.
  • Justin
Yes, because Episodes I, II, and III really flopped and failed to generate any income.
  • JJ
And the number one sign that you are old: You refer to Episodes I thru III as "the prequels"
  • Justin
How does that make any sense? What would a young person refer to them as? It's the Prequel Trilogy. They are the Prequels.

Episodes IV, V, and VI are the Original Trilogy or the Classic Trilogy. Does it make me/someone else "old" referring to them as such?
  • Chris
I think I will pass on this.

hate to say it -- but STAR WARS just isn't what it once was in my eyes.

    R.I.P LUKE SKYWALKER
  • theONE
wow sounds even more boring than the prequels. Lots of negotiations & political intrigue eh..that's what really caught my imagination back in 1977.
  • Ken
I agree with Dan. I too liked the prequals though, of course, they did have plenty of flaws. (But then again, so did the original trilogy.) I am excited for this new series, not only for the "darker tone," but I'd love to see the backstory about the rise of the rebellion. PLEASE, PLEASE--- DARTH STARKIILLER MUST BE IN IT!!
  • skyguy
I forgot about him... yeah, he doesn't always hang out with Vader so he should make an appearance or two.
  • misterclock
Isn't Lucas supposed to be working on a movie called 'Red Tail'?
  • Justin
Lucas is not hands-on writing or directing the forthcoming live-action series nor Red Tails. He's executive producer on the latter, which is already in production (or post-production, depending on where you look).
  • Jeff R.
Daniel Logan - are you kidding me?

Among the many things Lucas seems to have lost a touch for it is picking good actors and getting good performances out of those few that he does. Logan was TERRIBLE in AOTC. Just watch the Sonic mines scene where he laughs when Jango says he has a surprise for Obi-Wan - BRUTAL.
  • Justin
He was around 13 and had very little acting experience when he did Attack of the Clones. Criticizing a kid in that situation isn't too fair.
  • DT
Just hire the guys who wrote the new Battlestar Galactica.
  • Cheapshot
Many good points here tonight. George had the vision for the prequels 30 years ago. I remember hearing the news of them in the mid 80's. Remember that Star Wars was made without the input of major production companies, and Eps V, & VI had very limited input from them. George has since succumb to the many post-its that haunt writers and directors. An original script can be shredded in an afternoon once the urban 'PC' thinktank makes their persuasive suggestions.

I think George is considering the money. Inflation is up, the economy is down, and he has a huge staff to feed. But using the Aussies to write the series is perhaps the best idea yet. Those crazy Aussies can write some strange stuff... just look at Farscape and how well it did (Despite being Canceled).

This show will be about character development... it has to be, FX are too expensive and time consuming.
  • Wow, what a news break!!! We reported that last year.
  • Bob
This is going to be just like Terminator:The Sarah Connor Chronicles. Stray elements from a big screen saga squashed down to fit into a small screen budget and shooting schedule. Expect each episode to be an hour of "sitting around and talking" with none of the space battles and light saber fights that people expect from Star Wars.
  • Evan
They can still have space battles. BSG had AWESOME space battles and even used realistic physics, and it was shot on a TV show-size budget. It had great characters too, so you don't need the eye candy EVERY episode. Something I hope this series can learn from.

I am cautiously optimistic. I hope Lucas really does stay "hands-off". I'll believe it when I see it, though. I don't know what happened. How did Lucas mess up his own property so much that people want OTHER people to take it away from him?! I think he is probably the only filmmaker like that in History!
  • DerekJames
There is one thing that gives me hope for this project, and that is the fact that everyone hates George Lucas and assumes he will fuck it up. You know Lucas, with his infinate power and money, would like nothing more than to redeem himself in a big way, and this is his ticket. The fact that he is financing it himself gives him the opportunity, should he choose, to make this a gritty, realistic look at the underbelly of the bureaucracy of the empire, the birth of the rebellion, and the trials and tribulations of normal galactic citizens watching and/or participating in the battles raging far above their heads.

If he could pull off something similar to The Wire, with a large ensemble cast, storylines bordering both the "good" and "bad" guys, supreme character development, and gritty realism, (or what would be considered real in a galaxy far far away from our own) I could see this being amazing. Lets just hope that's the idea.

Lucas doesn't want to go out being remembered as the guy who ruined Star Wars. God knows he has enough money, at this point what should matter to him is fixing his legacy.
  • I liked the prequels, especially Revenge of the Sith. Not that they were without flaws, because they had some cringe-worthy moments for sure. But I liked the overall story and I am glad they got made. I don't think they are nearly as bad as the online film snob community makes them out to be.

I thing The Clone Wars is an amazing achievement in 3-D animation and tell fun and entertaining stories in the prequel era, so this tells me that the live-action show might be good enough for my enjoyment anyway.
  • RPK
I would ask that we see no jedis! The prequels have completely over saturated the Jedi mystique and left zero mystery.

And for the live of God, please keep Lucas and who ever wrote the prequels away from these scripts.
  • Anonymous
I hate to be -that- guy, but you misspelled Emporer. It's Emperor.
  • Egger Buckland
I'm looking at this with a detached, but curious viewpoint. There's no telling how good or bad it could end up being. I hope it's entertaining at least. At best it could be a whole hell of a lot of fun.

But I'm really expecting it to be shit. Can't help it.
  • abdel
I wonder if they're gonna have Star Killer make an apperance?
  • Facebook User
Hmm I'd like it if they did some casting before planning all of the first season. Sort of let the actors define certain aspects of the characters, allowing for a more intrinsic acting experience that will translate on the screen.
  • Danisgod6491
Why so much hate for star wars? The new cartoon is getting good and darker. I heard starkiller will be some what apart of th show. so i wouldn't mind seeing some jedi get hunted and killed. Boba Fett is always a plus for anything.
  • ShutupJulietteBinoche
Aurra Sing was one hyped up beeyotch.

A cross between Deadwood and the Sopranos?

More likely a cross between the Young Indiana Jones Chronicles and a mint Empire Strikes Back era Hammerhead bounty hunter action figure. But less interesting.
  • The Ancient
Considering the fact that 20th Century Fox had released the movies and Lucasfilms has had a decent relationship with them, I think you'll end up seeing 20th Century Fox taking the series for broadcast and getting the distribution rights for the home video version.

All in all, I'd like to see Lucas release the DVD set for the first season at about the time the series debuts on television. Oh, and please, no end of the season cliffhangers either ... especially since this series could lastf or 16 seasons (400 episodes @ 25 episodes per season).
  • Joey
I'd love to see cameos of the following: a child Princess Leia, with her addoptive father. A child Luke Skywalker, a teenage Han Solo, and Ben Kenobi. Not even full episodes dedicated to them, (except for Han, maybe Kenobi) just quick cameos.
  • CyT
You forgot Chewie!! He has to be in it. He is the best SW character of all :)
  • Lu
It sounds like it, if it is done right, will be great. However, judging by the past few Star Wars, I don't believe it'll be all that great. Please! prove us skeptics wrong.
  • Samdumb
It should be about bounty hunters.
  • MickJ
"Deadwood meets The Sopranos in space"

    Dream on, George.
  • Solid
I have a bad feeling about this.
  • Justin
Some information pertinent to the article:

    a. It's been in pre-production, in Australia, since May. (http://www.starwars-universe.com/actu-7298-seri...)

    b. Casting has been going on for months. Rose Byrne and Jay Laga'aia both confirmed this circa February 2009.

    c. Production will probably start in 2010 and the show will probably start airing in 2011 (George loves the "every three years" bit and Clone Wars was 2008).

    d. All reports indicate it will take place between Episodes III and IV and will be more of a "Tales from Jabba's Palace" type of angle with a lot of people who were maybe ancillary in the films (or all new characters) operating against the backdrop of the Imperial rise. Most everyone seems to think it will largely be about smugglers and bounty hunters and maybe the occasional fugitive Jedi.

I am actually excited about this one. From the stuff I have read on i09 and whatnot, they have gathered together a pretty good team of writers for this one. Not just that, but Lucas will be having a more advisory role, which despite I how feel about him (love him) is probably a good thing. Overall everything is shaping up for it to maybe be decent. If it is anything like the quality of the two animated series then I think it could be pretty not bad....lol

And have no fear, the only reason it is not blowing up all over the intertubes right now (though this is the 4th blog I have read it on) is because no one really believes it will get started soon. As soon as some images get leaked or whatnot expect front page yahoo.
  • Anti-Septic
I agree, the clone wars needs to fade away and fast. Hopefully this will renew my interest in Star Wars, although the comic books are always pretty good.

The comics are the only thing that have kept my faith in Star Wars the last few years.
  • sammyjankis
Aren't they meaking a big deal about the Star Wars panel at Comic Con this year, doing a live broadcast of the panel on G4. Maybe they have actual news on it at the con this year.

I can't wait for this. The time between 3 and 4 is my favorite era in the EU.
