Nimrod Antal To Direct Predators

A couple weeks back it was rumored that Nimrod Antal was the top name on the short list direct Predators for 20th Century Fox. Tonight, producer Robert Rodriguez has now confirmed to AICN that Antal is the filmmaker he has hand-picked to direct the film.

When I saw Armored, I could tell he’s also great with action and has a keen eye for casting. He reminded me of Quentin with how he was able to work with a group of very strong, singular actor talents and make it look effortless. I know he’ll be able to get the most out of what we want to be an outstanding cast. We really want to go with a character driven action movie, because that’s what we all remember about the original Predator, and we want to take it even further with this.

Rodriguez confirms that he will be very hands on, saying that this collaboration “doesn’t feel very different than my collaboration on Sin City, working with Frank Miller and Quentin. It’s one for all and all for one.” Wow, that sounds pretty hands on. Rodriguez had previously said that he might walk over to the sound-stage and shoot a few scenes himself. I doubted that any filmmaker would welcome that kind of collaboration with a producer, but it sounds like Robert has found a willing filmmaker.

He also says that KNB will be providing the practical effects and at least 60% of the film will be shot in Austin Texas this Fall. He gives very little information about the film’s plot, only that it “still involves a very intense group of people stranded on a Predator planet discovering unspeakable horrors (that are not always from outside their group). So like the original movie, the title does have a double meaning.” Read the full interview over on AICN.

Antal directing is something unpredictable, but in the end it's right. I hope he has the time of his life.

Another Predator film? Wow. So much for originality. I guess people don't want to adapt current books about aliens and just want to stick to what they think will sell more. I think I actually have mix feelings about this film. I need more information.

I am familiar with Rodriguez's work, and from the article it looks like we are going to see a "blood bath" of a film.

Leave it to Fox to place the next iteration of a classic franchise in the hands of some nimrod.

Hahahahahahaha! That comment just made my day. Thank you.

Hm. As an avid Predator (and Alien(s)) fan I'm excited by this news. I am glad to hear they are referring to the originals. And having people stranded on a Predator home world sounds like every predator fans dream. The only part I enjoyed from the second AVP was on the predator ship and the few shots of the predator world.

I really hope they can pull this off. I have faith in Rodriguez, and finding out that he has a lot of pull in this is good news. Let's hope there is little CG in the movie.

I hope he does not live up to his name

A predator planet could be cool. But to me, if they landed there, the movie could only be like 15 minutes because the entire cast would be dead.

    Kontroll was a great movie.

and I enjoyed Vacancy quite a bit up until the happy ending with a character ending up not being dead.

I would have rather had Michael J. Bassett or Neil Marshall direct myself though. Doomsday seems something that Rodriguez would have like, maybe Marshall turned the film down.

Sounds like the film will be shot behind a greenscreen, or completely in a soundstage which doesn't interest me.

    Shame this film will suck.

The screenplay is terrible -- fact

Robert picked the best guy... who would allow him to rock on set and shoot the stuff he wants to -- fact

the film is not going to be the big re-invention of the Predator world, in fact it will be more of an R rated AvP movie (without the aliens... sort of) -- fact

the cast will be all unkowns that will take a backseat to the world of CG creatures -- fact

    You sound pretentious -- fact
  • "because that’s what we all remember about the original Predator, and we want to take it even further with this..." doesn't exactly justify a remake, Robert. Would LOVE for him to elaborate on this.

    Nimrod...that says it all.
  • I think of it like this; Antal is a good director ('Kontroll' is a very enjoyable film), and while I don't think the majority wanted this project, it can't be any worse than those absolutely, soul-draining, brain-shredding films in the 'Alien vs Predator' franchise...It would take a hell of a lot to make a film worse than those two!
  • Antal Nimrod is a very good director. Just watch his movie "Kontroll", and you will find out, he's talented. I can't wait to see Armored, I hope it'll be good too. Good choice by Rodriguez!
