Transformers 2

After Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen’s monstrous 5-day domestic box office take of $201.2 million, Dreamworks/Paramount is going to want to fast track a third film into production and strike while the iron is hot. But will Bay hold up the big giant robots return to the big screen?

The studio has announced a July 1st 2011 release date for another sequel, but Michael Bay has been saying that he wants to make a smaller film before returning to the big robot action. And a Summer 2011 release date would mean that he would need to begin development within a couple months, and would have no break.

Screenwriters Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci have their plates full already. They are working on Cowboys and Aliens, and have promised Paramount a draft of Star Trek 2 by Christmas. But the Transformers scribes have already publicly said that they aren’t necessarily interested in returning for a third film. And some might argue that it would be best for the project if Kurtzman and Orci were not being involved in a third film. Opinions of Orci and Kurtzman aside, it’s worth noting that the writer’s strike is more likely to blame for the subpar screenplay for Revenge of the Fallen.

It seems more likely that Bay will move ahead with his self-described “small Pulp Fiction-like project”, Pain & Gain, which tells the true story of a couple of Florida steroid-abusing knucklehead bodybuilders who become criminals involved in an extortion ring and a a kidnapping plot that goes horribly awry [read more info about that project here]. The project actually sounds like a nice departure for Bay, a film which is more character development than explosions (actually, from what I hear, there is no explosions, only a car crash).

But who knows, Paramount might be able to offer Bay a deal he can’t refuse. But since Bay already makes an estimated 8% on Transformers movie toys, and a good percentage on the back end (enough to make Bay $80 million on the first film, and the sequel is on track to make at least 50% more than than original).

He desperately needs to learn how to make character driven films. Once he learns that and can understand the word "plot", then he might return a decent filmmaker. He really went too far with Transformers 2, despite the immense amount of money, and needs to redeem himself as a director.
  • See "The Rock" for example. Great dialogue, excellent character development, and very interesting plot. And yet that's a Michael Bay movie! I know he can do another good action film like that.
  • MickJ
See, it's been a long while though since The Rock, which despite its flaws is very entertaining to watch (and re-watch). How responsible is he for any of what you just mentioned? The development, the dialogue?
  • Mwepio JCVX
I love The Rock, great pure entertainment movie.

Bay brilliantly tapped the talent of an exceptional triumvirate of stars (Cage, Connery, Harris) and fused it some very stylish and effective action direction.

With the exception of the bloody awful Transformers series, his other movies have echos of this.

If his "Pain & Gain" project was a go I'd definitely be optimistic...
  • adE
dude i like the rock as much as anyone, but "excellent character development" ..........thats a little over the top.

    excellent action.....yes!

    excellent sean connery....hell yes!

excellent development of nic cage's hair..........oh yes!

you see where this is going
  • You don't know what you're talking about quintushalls. Michael Bay is an excellent director. Why do you think he was chosen for such a large production? He also has plenty of experience with plot and character driven movies. You act as if he's a writer. He has absolutely nothing to do with the Transformer's screenplays and has nothing to redeem himself from.

You guys seem to think these directors "pick" their movies. Sure, they can always say no, but their main job is to make money. If a high production wants them, it's usually because they are great directors, and can turn an otherwise substandard movie into something great. Can you honestly imagine how crappy the Transformers would've turned out without him?
  • clintbacon
    hey fuck u
  • Holy cow that is an incredible dollar figure. Say what you want about the film and Bay. Robots+bay = Summer blockbuster. It will be interesting to see if the film has the legs to keep its current pace for the next few weeks.

I agree with quintushalls. I don't think rushing into TF3 is a good idea in the sense that he needs to step back and rethink his approach. The problem with Bay is he doesn't seem like the type of director to be swayed by others opinions. He knows what he wants despite the crap he makes. Firing those 2 dumb ass writers would be a good start.
  • quintushalls
Unless Ice Age and Public Enemies are flops, I don't see how it could have a strong multiplier.
  • Solid
Of course he will. I think it's safe to say he's proven he's more than qualified to deliver a good transformers picture. What I hope happens in the next one is that bay leans more towards a film that has more substance than style. But as far as my own thoughts instead of the overwhelming herd mentality of "kill bay" i keep seeing, tf2 Roflmao is a cult classic and complete celebration of every ridiculous over the top moment in tf history.
  • There was only a two year gap between Transformers and Revenge of the Fallen so I think now is the time for Bay to have a break from robots and do something different. If all you do is think about robots for 6 years straight you'll go crazy.
  • NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
  • frelling_cute
God help us all. I am still numb from seeing the second one this past weekend.
  • k0rrupt
Question i would ask is should he be convinced to do another, despite making loads of money and satisfying some audiences, he's a one trick pony who shows no sign of adding any substance, if he could just restrain himself at times, and have a decent story (and all that other that goes into making a film) it could be good.

but i have my doubts whether he cares about how he's perceived
  • mchops
    Bay doesn't write the script.
  • Djangloo
But he does direct the actors and make the decisions as to how scenes are coherently edited together.

Niether of which does he do very well. Not since the Rock, at least.

Just throw Sean Connery as his estranged grandfather and we'll have a freakin' Indiana Jones / Transformers space-time continuum loophole!
  • SgtZim
Who are the people standing around Bay in that picture.....?
  • vadmspartan
Only one I know is the old guy next to Bay, Sumner Redstone, CEO of Viacom.
  • Tom
Man, I thought the guy on the right in the ballcap was Spielberg. Looking closer, I guess not.
  • Fast tracking a new transformers would be crazy. They should let Bay step away for a while, do another picture, then come back and blow up everything. This movie was good, but has been getting less than stellar reviews. The audiences need some time to digest this one before they spit out a third.
  • Phontsolo
    Please Michael Bay, go away!
  • mchops
Fasttrack it baby! Bring on the robots!
  • Djangloo
Here's an idea for a fast track follow up:

A split-screen two hour shot of robots continuously beating each other up, with Megan Fox running in slow motion away from explosions.

Oh wait. That'd be the film he just released, wouldn't it?

    Not that I'm complaining!
  • Joe
Please, please, Michael, do not return.

Transformers 2 was absolutely horrendous in every conceivable way, and horrifically executed from a craftsman' standpoint. It was as if someone gave a Freshmen film student a few million dollars to fool around with.

I am begging, you, Michael. Please. Please. Step away from Transformers, and give the franchise to a director who knows how to direct coherently.
  • hoffin
this is completely moronic. do you have any working film knowledge because this film was a huge undertaking by hundreds of people. stop belittling a film for all these people because it didn't meet Important-Joe's vision on Transformers 2. Grow up.
  • Phontsolo
Not moronic. Ultimately Michael Bay is responsible for the mess Transformers 2 is.

When you wrote "grow up" you were referring to Michael Bay's movie making correct?
  • okitsamovieaboutfightingrobots
What do you guys honestly expect from transformers lets see its a story about FIGHTING ROBOTS if you want to see a plot go watch one of the boring movies that wins 50 awards every year
i thought it was awesome beacuse i knew what to expect apparenly some of you expected something more than fighting robots
  • Edog
Apparently, it dosent matter what time he begins the production, he will make a new Transformers.
  • tarik
Come on, Michael! Do the f***ng Transformers 3! Go ahead and show us the Decepticon supercarrier you want to include in the first movie! And what about Unicron? I NEED to see a planet size Decepticon in IMAX 3-D!

    :)
  • Bumblebee
unicron isn't a decepticon, he's just a huge planet eating robot both sides hate.
now what *I* want is a movie with unicron where the two sides are forced to join against a common enemy. I want to see the sparks fly when they realize they can't beat each other up :-P
  • Reaper
I agree with you but, "T-man" . . . . . . COOL YOUR JETS!!! Michael Bay has to introduce TIDAL WAVE into the mix before a Decepticon supercarrier or UNICRON HIMSELF. We also need a gang of customized Autobot street racers, kind of like:
    Rodimus - Orange Lexus IS 300 with skull decals;
    Wheeljack - Black Ford Mustang GT with green flame decals;
    Smokescreen - Dark Grey Subaru Impreza STI 6 with black tribal decals;
Sunstreaker - Orange Pontiac GTO with black flame decals; and
Blurr - Blue Vauxhall Monaro VXR with silver/white decals
  • Merciful_budah
I've read the Pain and Gain articles and they'd make an excellent movie. Unfortunately I have no faith whatsoever that it's a movie that Michael Bay could make. The man handles subtlety like a bull in a china shop
  • Half of me hopes he does if nothing else but for a repeat of the CGI hi I experienced after watching it. That said I would gladly wait another 2 years should Michael bay deliver another movie of the same quality. Either way It will go down as one of the Great trilogies of all time.
  • jason B
this would be such a mistake. let bay have his 'break' film, then wrap up TF in a few years. why do they always wanna rush things?
  • Daniel
Come on Paramount, be smart, do *NOT* take Bay to direct a third Transformers movie, take someone else, someone who actually has talent!
  • Loved the second one and the first one.Cant wait for the third one ^^.
    I just love action.
  • Reaper
Cyfer, dude, you're my kind of websurfer. Totally agree with you but, to ensure that it becomes a masterpiece, we need to let Bay chill a bit, you know, and cool down from giant fighting robots.

P.S. What do you think about "Megas XLR - The Movie"?
  • gamerwithnolife
Finally I found some people I can totally agree with. The Transformers movies were good. Bay needs to chill before making another Transformers. LEAVE BAY ALONE! yes I agree with what a lot of people say. Mostly though I am pissed about what everyone keeps expecting from live action Transformers. There's so much stuff to get through because its such a huge franchise.

Bay did a good job. Sure, some more character development for the Autobots would have been nice, so would a little more substance to all of the characters. But if you want that kind of stuff go watch the original series, don't get pissed at Bay just because he's making something different and trying to make the franchise relevant to today.
  • sageone
as much as Id love to see megatron and optimus go at it again, and more of megan fox, I wouldnt want another transformers too soon, I like the feeling of "whens this movie gonna come out!" the waiting is part of any big blockbuster film, knowing that they cant come soon enough, but then again were all gonna die 2012 so i do wanna see it before then
  • Enzo Moran
You deserve a smack for your last sentence.
  • FRANCISCO
ANY WAYS THEY SHOULD MAKE ANOTHER TRANSFOMERS BECAUSE MEGATRON AND STAR SCREEN DO ESCAPE INTHE END.
  • MissMe
We won't actually die until December of 2012... so July 2012 will still be okay. :)
  • FRANCISCO
SAGEONE WERE NOT GOING TO DIE IN 2012 THATS JUST TO SCARE THE PEOPLE
  • God
2012 is symbolic... it's means the end of the World... as we know it. Not literally the end of the World.
  • Megabore09
Every generation deserves more than acouple of great movies using spectacular special effects so if they make it it shall be awsome
  • Djangloo
    Your generation "deserves" nothing.

See Louis CK's stand up on "Everything is amazing, and Nobody's happy" routine to find out why we have the best technology ever ... for the worst generation EVER.

YOU. Are entitled to nothing, my entitled little brat.

(Except perhaps transformers. Your generation did give us Megan Fox. But we'll take her, actually. YOU can't have her.)
  • Djangloo
Sorry. I misread. I thought you said "my" generation.

I have no idea what generation you come from.

But you should still check out Louis CK, because he hits the spot for any and all generations, who have to live in the same world as "todays" generation.
  • Reaper
No offense but . . . who are you?
  • T2:RotF was my last straw. No way I'm paying money for Transformers 3 no matter when it comes out. I'll catch it on DVD later.
  • Craigasorusrex
I'd think it would be best for Bay to tackle his smaller film to regain the touch of adding more emphasis on characters and plot. Although this also depends on the script but just like some have mentioned Bay has proven that he can make a movie without cardboard characters and a stupid story.

Taking this break on this smaller film will be good so once he comes back for Transformers 3 he might implement by making the character interactions interesting (not just "badass" one liners), well thought out story, and just a well structured film that doesn't drag.

Whatever the case, Transformers 3 needs to actually be a good film this time around if it expects to get people seated again because despite the massive earnings, people for the most part gave better reaction to the first film in comparison to ROTF.
