Exploit Yourself

Last month is was revealed that commercial director Carl Erik Rinsch, a protege of Ridley Scott, was attached to direct a prequel to Alien. I was one of the few people actually interested in Rinsch’s involvement. Rinsch’s commercials show an amazing sense of imagination, visual effects artistry and composition (we’ve profiled his amazing commercials on the site). There has been some talk that Fox has yet to approve of Ridley’s choice of director for the project, and I’m not sure what’s currently going on with the whole situation. This weekend I was sent this new spec commercial directed by Rinsch which I think you should all check out. Inspired by Nike, and produced by Big Lazy Robot FX, “Exploit Yourself” involves a robotic parkour runner in an urban setting

‘Exploit Yourself’ talks about pushing your limits just for the sake of it. We see no competition or race but the one we all got within, still we keep trying to beat ourselves up. Faster runs, quicker movements, higher jumps: strength, pain, muscle, sweat, determination, thirst. Trying one’s best, never give up, create an enemy when there’s not one, the feeling of suffering for self beating. Winning in front of your eyes, winning for your eyes only, and never stop making you BETTER. Who said life at the city was placid?

Watch the spec commercial after the jump.

    wow that was cool.
  • Craigasorusrex
That was a pretty awesome commercial. Hope if he gets picked he doesn't get forcibly constrained artistically by Fox.

Just look what happened when they kept a tight leash on Gavin Hood for X-Men Origins: Wolverine.
  • Tomathy
I think he'd be a pretty cool director for another Alien film. It's not like this franchise can get much worse, so they might as well take a chance on him.

Although it's not like Fox has been known for its risky productions as of late.
  • krackajap
You can tell that's a real robot because of the shaky cam.
  • Captain Awesome
It has all the flaws I hate about bad CG. Cool concept, but the quick cuts and angles do save it.

Blomkamp was great at doing things like this but making them feel more believable.
  • edward
exactly. blomkamp is one of the few that can utilize it as an essential tool for story. makes those fucks at ILM and DD gape in envy.
  • "...makes those fucks at ILM and DD gape in envy."

    uh, what?

ILM and DD do the work that they are told to do...and they are the best at it...if the director doesn't know what he/she is doing then that isn't the VFX studio's fault...
  • Sketch
Yeah it's a bit jarring when the CG looks like you can peel it off like a sticker. Either way the animation and camera work were good enough to pull that through as well as the more longer held shots of the android or whatever. He definitely moved very much like Spiderman/Daredevil.
  • Degree
Wow that is one of the best commercials I have seen in awhile. Hope Nike actually airs it.
  • Lux
    Really?? geez... keep watching.
  • Caleb
Anyone know the name of that song?
  • scott
Looks like he copied the shit out of I.Robot. Was probably Sonny under the hoodie
  • FutureOutlaw
The Big Gundown by Ennio Morricone. Amazing music.
  • that was pretty kickass!
  • tremor
I agree with Scott, other then some better shaky camera angles and badass music this is I robot.
  • jason B
anybody else reminded of 'sonny' from i, robot? i mean that as a compliment as i loved that film. their movements are very similar.
  • Such obvious CGI, that ad had the exact opposite effect it was supposed to have on me, I think. I was cringing the whole time. It looked like a video game.
  • freemachine
It was more 'parkour' than running.
  • cellchild
nehh, too cgi . cunningham is a better choice
  • Lux
Dont see whats the big deal
  • quintushalls
I don't have robotic legs. If it could make little Timmy who has no legs walk, then I'd buy it.
  • abergamo
I don't know about you guys, but I'm not gonna put a prequel from one of the best horror/sci fi films of all time in the hands of a guy who made a commercial. I wasn't too impressed but if Ridley Scott has faith in the lad then I guess he sees something I don't... which is why he's making multi-million dollar films and I'm not.
  • Tony Scott
You know what, the best way to prove you are a talented up and coming director is to take a story that no one has done and turn it into something that has never been seen.
Remaking Alien is neither. And while it seems inevitable that it will happen, what notoriety he will gain after on a public scale seems slim. I have yet to hear a director making their name on a remake. Have you?
  • It's comin
    It's comin
  • depp
zack snyder's dawn of the dead. . .
  • Jason K.
    Mirror's Edge.
  • Elfarfollas
Give it to Michael Bay. KABOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONNNN!!!!!!!!!!
  • Nothing against this guy at all (the commercial is fine), but this clip didn't sell me at all for him to direct an Alien flick.

I don't want a techno music video director to direct an alien film. Alien and Aliens (and even Alien 3) was all about perfect pacing and character development.

Even the greatest action scenes in the film series weren't high speed chases. They involved soldiers scanning through the darkness looking for something that already sees them.
  • Danos
Whats it got to do with Nike?

Shox make robots better free runners?
  • Rob
Not too bad, but the FX work was nothing like as good as some of his others (the "evolution" one, for example). The texturing, shading, animation and compositing weren't especially tight; looked more like a videogame at some points, very jarring.

If anything, I imagine Rinsch had to work hard in the editing suite to get an acceptable commercial out of it, once he saw the CG coming in.
  • Travis McGee
While watching this, I couldn't help but think of this guy under the hood as Spider-Man. I want Carl Erik Rinsch to direct the next Spider-Man film!!!
  • Lono
Nothing ground-breaking earth-shattering here. They had a guy in a green suit do parkour stunts and then replaced him with a so-so CG robot. What's the big deal?
  • some
I would really like to see some of your works, men... Reading your words, apparently so wise and experienced, they must be very impressive! I can't wait!
  • Buba
    Green suit?
  • bob
    Where is the green???
I think the video is admirable. All the 3d environment is incredible (Lono, did you know it was also cg?) as well as the model. Has anyone done any similar work? I am really impressed.
