Transformers 2

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen has earned an estimated $201.2 million, besting Spider-Man 2’s $152.4 million to become the second biggest five day domestic gross of all time.

But the film was a couple million short of the record holder — The Dark Knight, which grossed $203.8 million in 5-days. But thats not all, Transformers 2 also adds another $181.6 million from international, bringing the sequel’s worldwide gross to $363.2 million.

This included 169 IMAX screens, which contributed $14.4 million to the overall total. Apparently the film broke all kinds of IMAX records including the biggest single-day gross ($3.9 million) and the biggest five-day gross ($14.4 million). Of course, with IMAX retrofitting more and more digital IMAX theatres each month, these records don’t mean that much

No! No! Noooooo! This will vindicate a movie like this (in the studio's eyes). I saw TF2 about an hour ago and I am still reeling from how God awful it was. For those who say "It's a Michael Bay action movie! What do you expect". I would say that TF1 was a good M.B. action film: you can turn your brain off and enjoy what is happening on screen. But this 'movie' is flawed for so many reasons it honestly isn't even worth getting in to. If you liked this movie, I hate you.
  • jason B
i'm glad you hate me, it means i'll never have to suffer the dread that is knowing you.
  • Adroq
You idiot. You went and saw the thing despite the warning signs. Don't blame the studios, it's you (and people like you) who are at fault.
  • quintushalls
If Roger Ebert told you to jump off a bridge, would you? Sometimes you need to try things for yourself and see if you like it or not. If you don't like it, then you don't need to see it again. Then again, if it had a warning label like "Poisonous! Do not drink", then trying it for yourself isn't exactly a good idea and can cause more harm than good. Between jumping off a bridge and drinking poison, I need to find new metaphors.
  • Adroq
If Roger Ebert and Peter Travers and David Denby and Margaret Pomeranz and David Stratton etc etc etc told me to jump off a bridge would I jump, hell no. But if they told me a movie that was going to cost me $17 plus to go see was crap would I see it, hell no. Especially when there are other options out there.

One metaphor for you, this movie stinks.
  • Muffin7
I actually have to agree with you, although I don't condone calling people names.

But, it's true, anybody who actually bought a ticket to this is to blame for the studios believing that this is what people want to see, because apparently it is. This is why I bought yet another ticket to The Hangover and snuck in to see half of this (walked out, couldn't take it anymore, but that's another post).
  • I feel your pain, hombre, but let's look at the reasons why it made so much $:

    -it's summertime.
-people are depressed (due to the economy) and want something mindless, to blow their minds away
-Megan Fox's ass slinking on the motorcycle (I sat in a row behind Army guys and they CHEERED when she appeared)
    -explosions, robots, AND... more explosions!
-intensive marketing and word of mouth
    -once again, it's summer.

yeah, Michael Bay is a hack director, but business-wise, he knows how to appeal to the audience's taste for summer/popcorn movies.
  • oats
You're right, I'm not really surprised it made a ton of money, (adroq is right, I'm part of the problem for paying my $10) but people were laughing at the jokes and actually clapped at the end. I couldn't believe it. I guess in reality I should give props to the studio for anticipating the general public's lack of intelligence (and I'm not excluding myself because I did buy a ticket). I don't mean to sound so hostile or negative but this is really one of the most terrible movies I've seen in a long time (probably since Indy 4).
  • to be honest with you, I was sleepy during some scenes that went on too long. I prefer intelligent, smart action films (come on, Michael Bay, THE ROCK was pretty good, can't he do something else like that?). I only went to see the movie becuase I was visiting my friend in another city and we were bored with nothing to do.

    Sigh.
  • jason B
hi broomstick! i hate when i disagree with a /film poster who's opinion i really dig, but i just gotta say, imho bay is FAR from a hack. i'm not sure how we all define 'hack', but i guess i'd throw that title at someone who knows very little about the craft/mechanics of what it takes, or who was born with a silverspoon and handed director shoes with little effort given back to the artform. for all the bad that is said of bay, the guy can do damn near every job that is on a film set - so i gotta respect the guys production knowledge.

right now i am a very amateur wannabe filmmaker, & my mind is overloaded with stuff i cant really grasp, so i'm always in awe of the folks who 'get' all of it - not an easy thing to do.
  • Edit: Misread the OP. My bad.
  • nick
i hate you and i think you are a f**king faget and i would like to kick your f**king a$$ if i could. shut your f**king mouth you pole smoking queer. i hate you internet douchbags like you
  • Edward
This begs the question if film reviews are even relevent anymore.
  • Critics
Critics should just f off. They are useless cause if anyone was reading em than no one would have seen transformers. Ebert and all the rest should just disappear.
  • DocHop
Yeah, but I hate movie critics because theater is just a different form of art... I hate judging movies because you can't judge art... I don't think its right... You can't compare the Mona Lisa with an Andy Warhol painting... you can't compare Forrest Gump to Pulp Fiction, and you can't compare Transformers to anything either. It was an experience and that is all it should be, I despise movie critics and I despise award shows, they take the fun out of everything...
  • Connor F
Historic news, it was just a matter of time. $200 million is a landmark, I wonder what the the hell could break 250?
  • freemachine
"I wonder what the the hell could break 250?"

    AVATAR
  • nah, it won't.
  • quintushalls
    yes, it will.
  • I doubt it. It won't draw most women in because it's a sci fi movie. It doesn't matter how many times they say "From the guy who made a billion off of one movie 12 years ago...", Avatar isn't a sappy love story and won't be able to drag in the big crowds of women and couples on dates hoping for a romance.
  • Joe
Avatar WILL NOT break 250 in one weekend (5-day week? No, it comes out on a Friday) for various reasons.

    -It's a new IP
-There aren't enough 3-D-equipped theaters to sway the gross
    -Likewise with IMAX
-It might get delayed AGAIN; seriously, it comes out in less than 6 months, and we've yet to see a single frame of it

I can see Avatar having incredible legs, but not a killer OW. Especially because it only has a 2-week period to prey on America (Christmas < Memorial Day/4th of July)
  • It's not and will not be hyped enough off the bat. It may make slot over a long time though.
  • jason B
good. i love this franchise and i really am happy for all the cast/crew involved in making these films. i can't figure out if the majority of the backlash they all get is from jealously (because none of them are as bad as they get called) or what. and i'm aware that $ doesn't equal quality, but this at least is a good sign that a lot of people really enjoyed the hard work they did.

now, hopefully next weeks #'s won't drop off a cliff, but we'll see.
  • Just because it made such an amount of money doesn't mean people liked it or appreciated the questionably hard work put into it.
  • jason B
very true - we'll find out next week if people liked it, when the numbers hold or drop off.

but there is no "questionably" about the degree of difficulty it takes to make a film like this. the grip work alone is a lighting nightmare - and that's just one job on this massive production. say what you will about not liking the film, but please don't think for one second that the cast/crew had an easy time - or that they didn't work hard. in fact ANY film, good or shitty, requires A TON of hard work. you can't take that away from bay & co. i urge you to watch the dvd extras for TF1, to see a glimpse of the effort they put into these films. its very inspiring/impressive.
  • spacedog128
true - kinda means it was marketed well...
  • I certainly am jealous of $381 million. Wish I had it in my back pocket. Then I could hire people to make a watchable Transformers sequel.
  • Robd
I dont think reviews are 100% to go by but think of it this way everyone has their own opinions and not all reviews are going to follow different people. Sometimes a review works initially but word of mouth usually helps the movie on alot more.

I thought tf2 was ok , not overly spectacular but impressive cgi . I liked the action in the movie although thought to motion was a bit fast in the fight scenes. From what i heard from people i went to see it with , they loved the fighting loved it when optimus vs'd starscream and megatron. But eitherways it was bound to happen.
  • What is going to sell more than explosions and women?

What comes out next week, nothing that can top this I assume.
  • Chump Force 1
I don't believe anything of note until July 15 and Harry Potter.
  • Matt_H_C
Public Enemies comes out on Friday. A Michael Mann movie starring Johnny Depp & Christian Bale? It should be able to pull top dollar at the box office.
  • I think Transformers can hold out a win over public enemies. All depends on word of mouth.
  • Joe
With Public Enemies pulling in the mature audience and Ice Age 3 pulling in the kiddies, Transformers might struggle to keep a second weekend win. Especially because word of mouth is hitting, and it's not pretty. (One person of 10 I've asked liked it)
  • That is terrible. This movie had no redeeming qualities. While the first one was "fun" for one viewing it wasn't good. But they failed to even capture those few moments from the first and actually make something offensive on a few levels. I went with 2 friends and well all agreed it was not a good movie. Yet there were people there who were laughing at things that weren't funny and even clapped at the end. ! ? Really?!

People are generally quite stupid and this is the proof. I hope someday a super villain rules the world. Dr. Doom, hear my pleas!
  • Jenny
yet, your smartass still went out to see the movie.

all the "stupid" people who loved this movie thanks you for spending your precious time with them.
  • Burf
They were probably clapping because that shithouse of a film was ever.
  • you're right about that faux-imax nonsense. its so political to me, for some reason, that i want ads telling the truth about their 'retrofitting' or however you called it (is that official, 'retrofitting'?). anyway, I do feel awesome that tf2 didnt beat tdk. thank the lord.
  • Zinc
Well, TDK still has the record and was 10000000x the movie. I'm just hoping the third Batman movie breaks the second one's records...
  • Matt_H_C
I hear that. Had TDK's record fallen, I may have lost what little faith I have in Americans having good taste. I'm proud to say that I did not contribute a dollar to the aforementioned amount and have no plans to do so.
  • DocHop
Hooray, a tool calling out people by nationalities and making pointless comments! Gotta love the internet...
  • Matthew
Congratulations, world. I hope you're happy with yourself. This is why we can't have nice things.
  • quintushalls
Reviews will matter here. Everyone will see Transformers 2 ONCE. No one will see it twice. Therefore, the multiplier will be low. So while everyone wanted to see what it was like this weekend adding up to ~$200 mil, with Ice Age and Public Enemies on Friday, the numbers will immensely drop. I would be very surprised if Transformers makes $30 mil this upcoming weekend. It is still a lot of money though. But if it was good, with high reviews, like "The Dark Knight", it would have a greater multiplier and would have made Dark Knight money and become a billion dollar film.
  • *cough*already saw it twice*couch*
  • quintushalls
    why???
  • kmccarney88
    yeah really, why?
  • If you're a guy and you didn't like Transformers you can turn in your masculinity as it clearly isn't working right.
  • quintushalls
If you're a guy and you liked Transformers, then you can turn in your brain as it clearly isn't working right.
  • nick
i've seen it 4 times you f**king queer. your a fag why don't you suck batman off. i would like to beat your a$$
  • Piotr S
    Sad.. sad day...

slashfilm is starting to fill with digg like cry baby bitches.

the days of good ole normal discussion is starting to drastically fade.
  • quintushalls
Judging by your language, you look to be just the demographic that Michael Bay is targeting. You might also enjoy some films by Uwe Boll. Kudos on the de-evolution of man!
