The /Filmcast: After Dark is a recording of what happens right after The /Filmcast is over, when the kids have gone to bed and the guys feel free to speak whatever is on their minds. In other words, it’s the leftover and disorganized ramblings, mindfarts, and brain diarrhea from The /Filmcast, all in one convenient audio file. In this episode, Dave Chen, Devindra Hardawar, and Adam Quigley discuss their favorite movie food scenes, praise the hilarity of Dog Bites Man, remember their favorite movie soundtrack song usages, and figure out exactly how many slices of American cheese Homer Simpson ate that fateful night. Special guest Matt Singer joins us from IFC News and the IFC News podcast.

Babette's Feast. The greatest food movie ever. Food as a spiritual and communal experience.
Like Water for Chocolate. The other greatest food movie ever. Food as a sensual experience.

All four of you guys forgot to mention any Wes Anderson movie. For me that may be my favorite aspect of him as a filmmaker is his use of pop music for his soundtracks. Because of him over the years I have become a huge fan of David Bowie, Elliott Smith, and Nico. For me probably his best use of popular music is either the montage in "The Royal Tenenbaums" with Gene Hackman and the two kids running around town causing trouble to Paul Simon's "Me and Julio Down by the Schoolyard" or David Bowie's "Queen Bitch" at the end of "The Life Aquatic" that also serves as a tribute to the end of "The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai" (underappreciated 80's film). Good show this week.

I've gotta say that watching "Iron Monkey" always make me jones for quality Chinese food--Chinese people's Chinese food, not the stuff you get at takeout. There's the scene near the beginning where two characters are cooking a pot of mutton (I think) on a chimney, then the cooking scene after Donnie Yen is taken in by the doctor where he does up some stir-fry followed by the noodle slicing scene. Then another big meal when Iron Monkey, his sidekick, Donnie Yen and the son are reunited.

And "Deadliest Catch" always puts me in the mood for some honkin' big snowcrab legs
