Zak Penn Talks Continuity For Avengers Movie

penn_avengers

Screenwriter Zak Penn has long been attached to Marvel’s Avengers movie, and he’s recently begun talking about the project, if only a little bit. SciFiWire quotes him from a panel at the Los Angeles Film Festival, where he spoke briefly about one of the most daunting aspects of the project: continuity.

The backdrop to this story is Penn’s work on the X-Men movies, where he wanted to bring in other characters controlled by Fox, such as the Fantastic Four. But the studio balked; another great Fox decision! Marvel’s approach couldn’t be more different, as made evident by the fact that with Iron Man, Captain America and Thor in theaters by the time The Avengers hits in 2012, the team movie will effectively be one massive crossover story. “It is a world of difference,” says Penn. “It is a lot easier to do things like that, and they encourage it.”

So now he’s meeting with the writers of all the films to come up with a story arch that will take into account everything that has already happened in the individual character movies. That’s not rocket science by any means, but the suggestion is that they’re taking the project quite seriously, and planning things out so that they actually, you know, make sense. Which could be a nice change of pace.

They’re doing Captain American and Thor first, and then Avengers is coming out. They want to see that they’re all connected, not like the Fantastic Four can’t come into the X-Men world, like I was told. I’m taking a meeting next week with the Thor and Captain America people, and we are all going to get together, and I will see what is going to happen. I’ll see where they are leaving the characters; it’s pretty complicated…There’s a board that is tracking what is happening…Marvel is autonomous now. It is night and day: Everyone has read every comic. They know how to make a cool movie.

Give it a rest. Enough with the comic books.

You are welcome to stop watching any time.

he doesn't look like the sharpest knife in the drawer. I'm worried now.
  • The most important thing with this movie is going to be everyone from each individual film to have their say. Obviously Favereau is going to have word as director, but I also want Kenneth Branagh, Louis Leterrier (if Hulk is involved) and the various writers to all have a piece in it. Some might say that too many cooks spoil the broth, but this project is far too big for any single screenwriter to handle, and considering some of Penn's past mistakes (the Fantastic 4 movies, X-Men 3, Elektra), it would seem that he is going to need a lot of support, especially from writers/directors who care about the characters.

THANK GOD FOX IS NO WHERE NEAR THIS!....Let our Marvel characters go you piece of crap studio...now if Sony could be cool and let Tobey be Spiderman in the Avengers as a cameo or something that would be great, more than great, the best!...I dont care if Fox owns GOD himself, dont let them be involved, let Avengers make the $1,000,000,000 that it will make and let Fox crumble into a sobbing mess realizing they have been the worst when it comes to Marvel characters...I hope Fox bombs every character so their forced to relenquish the rights to our beloved characters, not the movie version they keep crapping all over....I hate you Fox...just give Marvel back their characters...
  • I like your passion, but Spider-Man wasn't an original Avenger. He didn't join until much later. As it is, it seems that they are not going to include original members such as Wasp or Ant-Man either. If the movie is successful though, and Sony is willing (probably not), I would love to see Spidey in an Avengers sequel.

But I do agree with you about Fox. While I didn't see it for myself, what I have been told about X-Men Origins: Wolverine has been absolute blasphemy and completely disregards the comic fanbase.

Actually if I remember correctly Ant-man was lined up with Edgar Wright. My guess is that they'll introduce him in Avengers and then spin him off.

    That would make the line-up:
Ant-man/Giant Man, Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, Hulk, and Wasp. Sounds like the Original line up to me.. Although Cap wasn't an original member either.
  • Cap showed up in issue #4, so he is basically an original member.

As for Ant-Man, from everything I heard they wanted to release individual movies before having the characters show up again in The Avengers. Edgar Wright is indeed supposed to direct an Ant-Man movie, but with his commitment to Scott Pilgrim and The World's End (which I cannot wait for), there is very little chance that he will be able to finish Ant-Man before Avengers is, at the very least, still filming.

As this article implies, the writing process has already begun on Avengers and I doubt that they are going to hold their breath for Ant-Man. No casting has been announced and I doubt that Marvel is going to want to force Wright's hand. They aren't Fox after all.

Also, where did you get Wasp from all that?

i'd like to see him meet with the guys who are writing the comics as well. they might have brilliant ideas on the who/what/when/where/y/how of an avengers crossover. no doubt they'd have some solid input.

This is going to be very ambitious. But I think it's going to be great if they manage to pull of a nice cohesive story that connects them all into the same universe, aside from the 2 cameos so far.
  • Spooky
Again, the X-Men are left aside on a crossover ;)
I give them the benefit of the doubt and that hopefully will refrain from the now usual dark and grim superhero movie formula.

Crossovers with the X-Men have never really worked for me (Not as well as Superman/Batman or Fantastic 4/Avengers anyway), so I won't really miss them in the Marvel film universe. To me the 'Mutants' kinda inhabit a world of their own, separate from the 'Superheroes'. The only X-Man to join the Avengers would be Wolverine anyway, and after Origins they need to let that character disappear for a bit.
  • I thought the X-Men crossover in Spider-Man The Animated Series was alright.
  • Travis McGee
Beast was an Avenger long before Wolverine. The Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver were X-Men and Avengers too at some point. Storm crossed over into a bunch of different teams.

If this is pulled off, I mean decently, this could have some epic reprocussions in terms of what can be done with stories stemming from the same universe and intertwining. I'm a bit psyched, but at the same time wary of the writing.

ok so it was nice when fox released xmen but come on marvel get them out of the picture already!! you know the thing about fox content is that it starts out great until fox butts in with their lame regs and stupid decision making process
  • Andrew
This project is already doomed since its by the writer of Electra, X3, The Incredible Hulk and Last Action Hero... Fox wouldnt be able to screw it MORE up than it is!
  • Don't hate on The Incredible Hulk. That was a solid movie that was miles ahead of its predecessor.
  • simon2it
I'm the only one who thinks putting the Fantastic Four in the X-Men movies sounds like the worst idea ever?
  • STG
Whats so fucking great bout Zak Penn, the guy is the biggest hack, X-men 1 & 2 were good coz of singer. And the other piece of shit movies are already mentioned like fantastic four and elektra. Edward Norton had to do a complete re-write on the incredible hulk to make remotely good. and seeing this pathetic track record marvel has still given him the job. I hope Favereau, RDJ and gang throw away the script while shooting and improvise otherwise there is no chance for avengers.
  • but isn't that what always happens? a story is just a story. it takes everybody involved to make it a proper movie.

that Ratner didn't know how to work with his script says more about Ratner and Fox willingness to put the film out quickly than his script. and like you mention competent people who love the characters are involved so this is basically already going to be pretty impressive because of the cross overs alone.

let's just see what he cooks up and then bitch if it's not up to the standards we've come to expect now because of one movie.
  • NO. The script is the blueprint for every department from stunts, to sets, to wardrobe, to camera, to CGI--and nine times out of ten it is the bible for the actors and director. It is certainly the bible for how the film gets budgeted and scheduled. Scheduling can effect which actors are availible. Everything from the amount of money a film needs to the amount of extras a scene needs comes out of the script. Even if every department is brining their best work to the table, without a good script, the film will always suffer.

I wonder if we can see something from DC after this does really well at the box office.

Though I do believe theres a bit more loops for them to jump through since the way they gave out there properties
  • I don't want to sound pessimistic, but I do worry about the comic book movie bubble. Marvel has already started talking about 3 movies a year and while I will no doubt go out to see all of the quality ones (ignoring garbage eg. Ghost Rider and Elektra) but if quality starts to be sacrificed for quantity there could be a big problem by the time Avengers arrives.

I do agree that DC needs to get on the ball. Batman is a true classic (ignoring the Schumacher disasters), but I've always found Superman to be a bore. A successful Green Lantern movie will hopefully enlighten their media division that there is potential in their character stock.

Of all screenwriters...why did they pick him?? Incredible Hulk was pretty good but c'mon this is the Avengers movie!
