Alice in Wonderland logo

Earlier this week Walt Disney Pictures released the first promotional character photos and concept art for Tim Burton’s 3D adaptation of Alice in Wonderland. Tonight Disney has sent us high resolution versions of the previous images, along with the official logo for the new film (above). After the jump is a collection of high resolution versions of all the photos and concept art released earlier in the week.

Below you can see the first official photos of Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter, Helena Bonham Carter as the Red Queen (”Off With Their Heads”), Anne Hathaway as The White Queen, Matt Lucas as Tweedledee and Tweedledum and Mia Wasikowska as Alice, followed by a few pieces of concept art. Alice in Wonderland

The film is actually a sequel to the original story, and follows Alice, now 17 years old, as she escapes from a snooty party and follows a white rabbit down a hole, back to Wonderland. The White Rabbit is convinced that he has the right girl, the one who had visited the magical land ten years prior. But Alice doesn’t remember her past visit to Wonderland. The creatures of Wonderland are ready to revolt and are hoping/waiting for Alice to help them, but will she? Can she?

Alice in Wonderland hits theaters on March 5th 2010.

I'm a big Burton fan, but I think his character and set design is too overtly creepy. The '50s Disney movie managed to convey a sense of eerieness while still looking bright and cheery on the surface, which I liked a lot.
  • Lol
Couldn't agree with this more! That was the best part of that film.
  • whatchagonnado
I can't work out if this is a swipe at Burton or not?! You think his work is "overtly creepy"? Surely that's a good thing for this movie? You wouldn't wanna see the same film again now, would you? So time for a change then! I think Burton is a modern genius and can't wait to see his interpretation of this "bright and cheery" tale
  • STEVEN
REMEMBER THIS IS A DISNEY FILM THOUGHT SO IT'S GOT TO BE PG :( IT WOULD PROBABLY BE MUCH BETTER IN PG-13
  • Not necessarily. Pirates was PG-13 and a Disney movie.
  • verebs1
Yeah I guess you're right but you never know with disney. hopefully this will be PG-13 otherwise it will mostlikely suck.
  • why would it even need to be pg-13? you can do pg and have it be creepy. This story doesn't need to include any foul language or sexuality that would earn it a pg-13
  • Jabberwocky
Pirates didn't have any language and BARELY any sexuality. like Depp said in the Pirates3 bloopers, "There's no cursing in a Disney fillm, mate."
  • theAguilar
Alan Rickman as The Caterpillar will, more likely than not, be smoking. The MPAA might not be able to handle a pipe, or what have you.
  • Lilz
I (personally) don't agree with you. Although I have never seen the 50s Alice In Wonderland, I am also a HUGE Tim Burton fan and love his ability to make things appear extremely weird and creepy and yet intriguing, so I think it will be exciting to see how he has encorporated his own personal film style into a classic film. I'm REALLY looking forward to this film, it's at the top of my 'want-to-watch' list, that and Toy Story 3, but anyway, I'm not saying that your opinion is stupid, I just personally disagree with it. :)
  • jank
yup, that logo definitely screams burton, for sure. reminds me of nightmare.
  • Switters
The original story is pretty creepy, so I don't mind the set design. Lewis Carroll was a strange old man. I'll see it just because its not a remake or a sequel which is increasingly rare for 'Blockbuster' movies now.
  • jank
actually, it is a sequel. the title can be a bit misleading, because it seems to be taking its story from "through the looking glass".
  • Switters
I meant a sequel as in "Quick, write a script so we can capitalize on our newest Franchise!". I know its a continuation of the story, but since it has no direct connections to any other Alice films I don't mind.
  • attack" The AP. The point is very simple: The AP applies an obvious double-standard. It is happy to sell, through its image licensing database, photographs that are really just bare copies of artists' work, yet it condemns Fairey for using an AP photograph in a far more creative
  • Keith
These photos are old. They have been out for around a month. Hope the madhatter is played well by depp tho!
  • burton fan
Ive loved Burton movies since i was a child, watched nightmare before christmas everyday. Huge Burton fan loved every movie. can't wait to see Alice in wonderland. I love the darkness of his films, what a talented man.
  • The girl on the second picture...I swear she looks exactly like a girl from my class.Same hair, pale face and everything >_>.Damn
  • Wow i just cant wait to see it, im a big fan of lewis carrol, tim burton and johnny depp, before he started making this film , i used to tell my friends :"why he doesnt make Alice in Wonderland? its just his case!" and now ... my dream has become true! i'm SO happy! i think its gonna be one of my most favorite pictures of all times:)
  • Palmer
The logo is just meh with me. Too similar to the logo of some of his other movies.
  • Hail2theKing
Tim Burton is a one-trick-pony. He has become so unoriginal... it's like watching a Michael Bay movie.
  • There's just something about those character shots that is so damn... clumsy. The logo itself is no surprise. Nightmare Before Alice In Christmas, anyone?
  • Colonel_Kurtz
It's amazing what they can do with photoshop. I swear it almost looks like there's a splash of color around Anne Hathaway's eyes.
  • Excellent logo!! I like how Gothic and Creepy it is. This is how Alice is suppose to look Live action. The background setting look so Beautiful. For some reason these pics make me want to watch Qwen Stefani "What you waiting for" video.
  • I think this role is going to prepare Johnny for "Batman 3". That's if there is a Batman 3 with Nolan. I really hope so, that would be a fans wet dream.
  • um, you know it was a rumor that Johnny Depp was going to be in batman 3.
  • Sues
The logo feels canned, like movie studios have a "Tim Burton" font on their design programs that they pull out whenever they need something equal parts creepy and whimsical. That said, it's exciting to see the words "Alice in Wonderland" in that font. The concept art is gorgeous; I really hope the hedge sculptures turn out to be more than just an Edward Scissorhands homage.
  • Alek
    Totally agree about the logo.
  • ashley
i love it. have any of you ever seen alice through the looking glass? the only thing that made the disney animated film seemingly "cheery" were bright colors. i believe this is the way alice and wonderland was meant to be. the book itself is not cheery in the least.
  • alberto rodriguez
Sounds a lot like Robin Williams's Hook, (peter pan)
  • LilyMarlene
This better be good, Mr. Burton. I hope you are a true fan of Lewis Carroll. He was not a "strange old man" as some would like to believe. He was a quiet, religious, mathematician and scholar. His love for children was a wholesome one, as he himself was shy and innocent in nature. He came to know several good families through his interest in photography, as he was asked to do family portraits.
The images here are fantastic. I look forward to the movie, and only hope it will do justice to the creator of Alice.
  • Johnny Boy
that's some awesome production design, art direction, costuming, and make up... I wouldn't be surprised if it's nominated for any or all of those Oscar categories.
  • I think this movie will be interesting to look at but not much more.. It seems hard to believe with Tim Burton behind this project that they are focusing on anything but style. I like these character shots as stills, but I'm not sure they will translate well to film without feeling forced. Same with these backgrounds.. The second one with the rabbit is beautiful but I cant picture it in motion. I think it will feel more like they are showing you this bizarre world rather then actually making you feel like you are in one.
  • Very well said.
  • Sketch
I love the designs like I stated before, but I just think the Hatter is too colourful for my tastes. I don't want it to scream tiedye and candy mountain so here's hoping it's not overly saturated.
  • i think the mad hatter looks way to out of place from the rest of the character designs.
  • Sketch
I agree. But can't help that now. Gotta wait on the performance at this point.
  • Amanda
but hes mad so shouldnt he look different? i dont know..thats what i thought when i read your comment.. >__>
  • I only have one honest gripe about any of this: I'm all for directors having their favorites, but could Tim Burton make it longer than three films in a row without using either Helena Bonham Carter or Johnny Depp in a starring role?

Nothing against the dude, but sheesh. Try some new blood every once in a while.
  • Johnny Boy
Many directors like to continue to work with actors they previously worked with. It's not uncommon to do this. Scorsese for example, has many films with Robert DeNiro, and more recently with Leonard DiCaprio.
  • Sues
I understand directors having a comfort zone with certain actors, but even Scorcese has learned to do a great gangster movie without DeNiro. Even Kevin Smith, who spent about fifteen years writing and directing the same characters, has crawled out of the Askewniverse. I like Tim Burton a lot and I like Johnny Depp a lot, but I'm beginning to think Tim is afraid he can't achieve his "signature style" if he doesn't have his regulars.
  • Twitter Sucks
my only gripe with directors using the same actors as leading roles back to back, is that it becomes distracting to the story after a while. Thats when you know if a director is actually trying to tell a good story or just do something fun between paychecks.
  • That was the best part of that film.
  • claydizzle
I got goose bumps when i saw the pictures. those picture are amazingly awesome! i really REALLY hope that he sticks with his roots on this one... like Coraline and Nightmaire before Christmas. the only thing i would change would be to get rid of the actress in the picture above playing "the white queen". she has only been in flop movies except for that princess one(chick flick). get a big name actor that is actually amazing AT acting. *just my thoughts*
  • /Ryan
The set designs look amazing but some of the characters seem to be questionably ridiculous....specifically J. Depp looking like Ronald McDonald after a 10 year PCP binge...not to stereotype, but i was hoping Tim burton would have had a 'darker' image for the mad hatter...anyone else a little dissapointed with this character design?
  • ~Monsterain~
tim burton had nothing to do with coraline and they have already finished filming though so I think it's a little late to change the actor playing the White Queen;)
  • Twitter Sucks
wow. you make me sick. first off. Coraline wasn't a tim burton movie...
  • Amber V-N
    hi my name is Amber

i have always loved the movie of 'Alice in Wonderland" since i was little and i hope this movie well be great
best of luck ^_^ i can't wait to see it!!!!
  • Tammy
I CANNOT WAIT!!!! I hope is dark, funny, creepy, and all around different from the childrens version. If you want sweet, stick to the original one.
  • Mad Hatter
Burtons Wonderland is NOT a remake of the clasic tale. It is set 10 or so years later and Alice RETURNS to Wonderland as a young adult with no memory that she has been there before (so I have read). :)
