The Last Airbender Teaser Trailer

The Last Airbender

The official teaser trailer for M Night Shyamalan’s The Last Airbender is now online. On display are M Night’s signature extended seamless single takes (which I’ve always loved), ILM’s amazing air-bending effects and a logo that looks very similar to the Harry Potter series. Overall, it does a great job at teasing the big picture. I’m suddenly excited to see if this is the film that all the Avatar fans believe it can be. Paramount believes they have the first part of a trilogy. But who knows? Don’t call it a comeback just yet, but I think M Night will have the interest of his harshest critics after this teaser debuts in front of Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. Thanks to /Film reader Thurston for the tip. Watch the trailer now after the jump. As always, leave your thoughts in the comments below.

Based on the hugely successful Nickelodeon animated TV series, the live-action feature film is set in a world where human civilization is divided into four nations: Water, Earth, Air and Fire.

The Fire Nation is waging a ruthless, oppressive war against the other three nations. The film’s hero, the reluctant young Aang (Noah Ringer), is the “Last Airbender” — the Avatar who, according to prophecy, has the ability to manipulate all of the elements and bring all the nations together.

Aided by a protective teenage Waterbender named Katara (Nicola Peltz) and her bull-headed brother Sokka, Aang proceeds on a perilous journey to restore balance to their war-torn world. Dev Patel plays the Fire Nation’s evil prince Zuko. Exiled from the Fire Nation by his father, Zuko is sent to capture the Avatar in order to restore his honor and right to the throne.

The Last Airbender is being targeted for a July 2nd 2010 release.

You know who would have been a better choice to direct this movie? Mark Osborne.

He's already proved that he can deliver some great action scenes with Asian-like martial art in them in Kung Fu Panda and handle things with depth in them in More.
  • but then there wouldn't be a twist.
  • That made me laugh lol.
  • rockinrors
They should have announced Mark Osborne was directing it. And then, after its release announce it was M. Night all along!
    How's that for a twist!
  • CeeBee
Shyamalan should be beaten by a retarded kid in a cape, for his hideously racist casting.
    Give his neck a twist.
  • Elle
Not really. Avatar may be anime-styled, but it's American-made anyway, and the characters look more Caucasian than anything. It's more racist to assume that only Asian people are allowed to do martial arts. Not that a little more racial variety in movies wouldn't be nice.
  • jasonthe
    Watertribe!

(any fan of the series will get that... think "represent!")
  • Renka
Actually, they are more Inuit. (I'm still annoyed about the casting. Jesse McCartney? Are you friggin' kidding me?)
  • Ricky
I could see the Inuit making sense in this movie for Aang. The Air-Benders are nomads, as were the Inuits.

Jesse McCartney shouldn't have a role in the movie!
  • siggernucks
Yeah your not a REAL fan if you think that...
Water tribe had blue eyes etc...
    Fire nation resembled japan alot...
    Wind resembled buddists
I didnt pay much attention to earth TBH
  • White Vinegar
No it's racist to assume, non-asians, have the right to assume that only Asian people are allowed to do martial arts.

Asians have been practicing martial arts longer than any living race on the planet. You need to respect that. Especially, that people like Bruce Lee dared to teach Caucasians Martial Arts, against the will of his country men.

White people need to realize Asians have the sole Right to do as they please with the Art they perfected many centuries ago.

IMHO, white people look stupid when doing Martial Arts.
  • whatthefistheinternet
A lot of ancient cultures had a form of martial arts, not just Asian. (egyptians, greek, etc.) I agree, given the influence of the material, there should be more asian people represented in the film.

But, IMHO, I think the fact that you used someone as "anti-racism" as Bruce Lee in a pretty racist comment is sad.
  • Jacques
No, some Asian cultures simply haven't changed their martial arts techniques. Some might say that that is primitive. I wouldn't, but some might. The Martial Arts of the west was just as formalized as any other. The techniques necessary to use a massive long sword, or wield a halber could be quite elegant. But they were TRUE martial arts (arts of war) and when war changed they did too. What we call Asian "martial arts" lingered because they were attached to various philosophies and ways of life, completely separate from the martial world. Oh and both "Martial" and "Art" are western words, so I don't see why any non occidental should be useing them.
  • activecuzz
you must have really hated tha whole matrix trill then... lol but i do agree. i think tha whole cast should have been asian cuz tha patel dude is def going to shame zuko.
  • Michael
Right because commander ZHAO and princess YUE and avatar ROKU are not asian...

I agree that we shouldn't typecast asians as martial artists but then again why take away from them in live action movies? Why the need to change their races?

Oh right because asians aren't bankable.

    Thanks racist Hollywood.
  • activecuzz
is it me or is all tha fire nation people indian?
  • They used the reason no talented non-whites available. (Bruce LEe in KungFu and they picked David Carradine)
Now they use, it's racist to not cast white actors in these specifically Asian roles.

    ATLA:
Two of the characters were Inuit based.
The other two were East Asian.

They picked three white actors and one South Asian.

    We can also name:
21 - Bringing down the house.
    Dragonball
    King of Fighters.

Yay!! For Hollywood "Diversity" also known as Systemic Racism.
  • I have the feeling it is going to be be something like Dragonball Evolution.... Thats enough to say, they are going to ruin another of my favorites animated series.
  • Justin
hey, it looks better than dragonball, at least give it that.

Please premiere the Avatar (the other one) trailer in front of transformers.
  • The Popper
i dont think so...this trailer had better effects then dragonball ev may have been capable of...lol...it was a sad day for me...this looks promising....
  • I gotta say the visuals look pretty on point but I'm still worried about the script.
  • scotty
and the directing, acting and the way they'll talk like M.Night.

Say this this as I only watch The Happening last week when I got it from LoveFilm so its fresh in my mind.
  • Sketch
What visuals? The faraway shots from a couple of boats in the ocean and some mountains? Gonna take a lot more then that for me to say the same.
  • dodo
You know, with all the crap being thrown at this film, I am actually hopefully optimistic. The fire nation ships look amazing, and the voice over actually sounds cool.
  • Harry Potter was the Chosen One.

Aang is the Avatar, not the "Chosen One"
  • kfizz
the fire nation fleet looks so bad ass.
  • clarence somerset
strange that they're branding it as a M.Night film when he's almost B.O poison. its good to see him venturing beyond thrillers-with-a-twist though.

on the bright side, this seems to be what a live action anime will look like.
  • Too bad he's not, since he's still profitable.
  • uforeader
hahaha. Box office poison? He makes tons on money every time.
  • MrDisturbing
Never had an interest in the series, but I am looking forward to the movie. Let's just hope Shyamalan does a better job with this than he did with The Happening.
  • WashUrFilthyVag
I actually enjoyed The Happening. I don't know why. Maybe its just hilarious to laugh at...
  • Lance_HBomb
Intelligent killer trees. The greatest thing about the movie was the twist:

    [SPOILER]

    *There was no twist!*
  • Chelsea
The Happening wasn't that bad, and what he said was the cause of everything wasn't really a lie or made up. Trees do have the ability, maybe not to that extent, but they do. I loved that movie because the cause of everything was actually logical.
  • MrDisturbing
I do agree that the story is intriguing, but the script and acting was just horrid...
And no, trees do not have that ability. Though it would be cool if they did.
  • HolyShitMatt
If you have a good amount of time on your hands and enjoy animation I would encourage you to watch Avatar. It's one of few cartoons that has an important story and it's told beautifully.
  • MrW
While the brief clips give no hint whatsoever as to what the movie will really be like, the visual style it hints at makes me giddy.
  • Dr_Mecha
I agree. Love how that was just two (one?) long shot for the whole trailer.

His latest movies may suck, but I will always give the guy credit for his carefully crafted camera work.
  • Matt
It looks like it can be good but I'm just worried that they didn't put all the key important parts in and in Book 1 there area lot with introduction of all the characters and the fact that its a Shyamalan movie. Here's hoping its good. Full teaser trialer with transformers tomorrow
  • I'm a huge fan of Night's earlier films, so I'm hoping this genre/style change will set him back on track to direct films which are actually good. The visuals looks pretty damn good, but that's never really been a problem with his work (he's very strong visually in my opinion) it's the writing that will decide this one.
  • Felipe
This movie better be fucking good. Because it's not, M. Night Shemylyan or what ever his name is, he's going to ruing the BEST show I've watch in my teen years. Yes, I am a 15-year old watching Nickelodian. BUT THAT FUCKING SHOW WAS SO GOOD.
  • Lance_HBomb
    You are not alone, comrade.

    You are not alone.
  • haha, 23 here and I treasure it. Theres no problem with liking a damn good show.
  • HolyShitMatt
Almost 23 and I echo all the positive thoughts toward Avatar.
  • Nick
Agreed, best series live action or anime, it had everything great story, cast of characters, the fight scenes were bad ass....

I know M. Night has the ability to totally screw it up forever or keep it going as a fantastic story. I usually don't put a lot of faith in M. Night... here is for hoping.
  • Tim
Just a thought; swearing works best as exclamation not punctuation.
  • Craigasorusrex
Well folks ILM has done it again. The fire nation ships looked great and Aang airbending was just plain awesome.

To think thats only from working on the effects for two months roughly and they have 1 entire year to work on the effects in post.
  • Solid
For anyone who doesn't know, Avatar the last airbender was imo the "last" good cartoon left on Nickelodeon. I don't watch the channel anymore since I have the internet, but back when I did have cable, I watched it religiously. The show is something of a naruto/dragonball ripoff. Honeslty, Naruto deserves a live action treatment first since it kicks avatar's ass, but Last airbender's still deserving a movie treatment. The story's very much like star wars in that we follow our young hero through the old hero's journey story. What's really great about it though is the characters and just excellent writing, something I hope the actors and M night are able to capture in this film. A lot of the humor from the show comes from the cast's excellent chemistry and the fact that Hook's Rufio was in it. I fear the movie version won't live up to their high quality performances... Still I look forward to it since it really is a classic cartoon series on par with the likes of Batman TAS, Gargoyles, RGB, TMNT, Beast wars and yes Dragonball though some would say the show's aged badly... I wish Nick would continue the show... I don't understand why they'd throw all that money away by ending it while other worse shows keep going... Typically when movies like this come out a companion series is made isn't it? Someone in the biz might be able to tell me... Anyway um, good luck with this movie. The show was most popular back when I was a baby, 19 or so... it'll be harder to sell it today when kids are more into whatever stupidness they're showing now, or internet porn...
  • Danisgod6491
    naruto sucks.
  • Solid
    Oh ok then! You win.
  • The Popper
lol...that was funny..the rufio guy could have just playd zuko, he did the voice, y not?...but whatev..loved the show..will have hopes for the movie.
